nexus - manual

Module: nexus (NexusCore.php, nexus_link.php, nexus_pair.php, nexus_tool.php, nexus_tidy.php) Version: 2.2.2 Date: 2026-10-26 Another collaboration between Andrew.human and Claude.ai

Audience: people, and machines or AIs that read the forum. Facts are stated flatly.

1. What it is

A nexus links posts into a project: a locked old post, the newer post that replaces it, posts that contribute to it, posts it depends on. The link goes between posts (messages), not topics.

Five kinds of link, written "A kind B". Direction matters: it is how nexus knows which post is the master and who sits under whom. Use related only for plain grouping with no hierarchy.

Kind	Reads as	Example
`contributes`	A belongs under B (B is the master side)	an uninstall step, under the master post that describes the whole job. The default.
`related`	A and B belong together	no direction, no hierarchy
`supersedes`	A replaces B	the new topic's first post supersedes the locked old one
`depends`	A depends on B	A cannot be used without B
`uses`	project A uses project B	joins two separate projects without merging them (section 1a)

A project is every post reachable from any other through links of any kind except uses. Add a link and the two projects it joins become one. Pairs can be added one at a time, as you go; groupings may become large and tangled, and that is fine: every post of a project shows the whole project.

1a. Two projects that depend on each other (`uses`)

Sometimes a whole project depends on another whole project: the listatt project (its master is the post that describes listatt) is used by many later projects for their user interface. Linking a post of one to a post of the other with any other kind would merge them into one. A uses link does not:

each project keeps its own master, outline and step numbers;
the link is made between any post of one and any post of the other (the post you are working on, not necessarily the master);
many projects can use the same project (listatt can be used by any number of others);
NEXUS.md gets an Other projects section on every post of both projects, and listatt draws each connected project as its own card;
a single post with no project of its own can use a project too.

php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_pair.php topic=8075 topic=7599 --kind=uses # the project of 8075 uses the project of 7599

Two posts already in one project cannot be joined by uses (the command says so).

1b. Several masters: branch masters

A project has one master: its top post. But any post can also be flagged master of its own branch, meaning "this post heads the posts indented under it". You can flag as many posts as you like, whether or not anything is under them yet. Example, with Nexus at the top, then Listatt, then Collaborative:

Nexus (8075) MASTER of the project
└─ Listatt (7599) BRANCH MASTER (Collaborative is under it)
└─ Collaborative (7735) BRANCH MASTER (nothing under it yet)

php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_pair.php topic=7599 topic=8075 # Listatt belongs under Nexus
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_pair.php topic=7735 topic=7599 # Collaborative belongs under Listatt
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tool.php branch topic=7599 # flag Listatt as a branch master
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tool.php branch topic=7735 # flag Collaborative too
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tool.php branch --list # every flagged post
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tool.php branch topic=7599 --clear # remove a flag

A branch flag changes only the labelling: NEXUS.md marks the post BRANCH MASTER in the hierarchy and says "master of its branch (N under it)" in the chronology; listatt shows a BRANCH MASTER badge. It does not move the post, and it does not touch the project's own master (master, section 6). It needs the table nexus_branches, which the package creates when installed or reinstalled.

Putting a post into a project

php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tool.php assign <post> <any post of the project> [--under=POST]

The post is linked under the project's master (or under --under, a post of that project). A post that is already in a project of its own is refused, because that would merge two projects; use unlink first, or join the projects with uses.

2. What you see

NEXUS.md - a small real attachment on every post of a project. It is the same overview on each post (only the "this post" marker and the line naming the post differ): the master post, how many posts, when the project began, its latest post and its span in days, how many topics are locked, which posts are superseded or current; then the hierarchy (an outline, each post indented under the post it belongs to), the chronology (a table with a step number for every post, 1 = oldest, with date, locked or open, current or superseded, the post it sits under, and its role) and a plain list of the relations. Links only: the file holds no forum text. It is rebuilt automatically; edits are overwritten. Every post is listed with its topic number as well as its post number.
The listatt box (listatt 6.29 or later) starts with the same picture as an outline: a summary line (post count, master, first and last date, span), then every post indented under the post it belongs to, each with its step number and date, a MASTER badge on the master, the current post starred, superseded posts struck through. It is drawn live for each viewer.
Other projects. When a project uses, or is used by, another project (section 1a), NEXUS.md ends with an Other projects section naming each one (title, post number, size), and the listatt box draws each as its own card (listatt 7.1.0 or later).
Search engines and AIs that index attachments (for example the forum's own markdown search) can read NEXUS.md, so finding one post leads to the whole project.

How the master, the hierarchy and the order are decided

Step number: by the date each post was written, oldest = 1 (ties by post number). Dates in NEXUS.md are UTC.
Who sits under whom: a post that contributes to, or depends on, another sits under it. A post that was superseded sits under the post that replaced it, unless it already sits under something else. Where a post has several candidates, the earliest link wins. related links give no hierarchy.
Master post: the top post (one that sits under nothing) with the most posts beneath it. If the links give no hierarchy at all, there is no master and the line says so. When there are several top posts, the biggest family is the master and the others are shown after it, still at the top level.
Master chosen by hand (nexus_tool.php master <post>, or the admin page): that post goes to the top whatever the count says, and the former top posts hang directly under it. Everything else keeps its place. NEXUS.md and the listatt box say "chosen by hand". One hand-set master per project; setting another clears the first. A post that sat under another can be made master (its own parent link is set aside, not deleted).
Loops: a link that would make a post sit under itself, directly or through others, is refused.

3. Who can see which titles

NEXUS.md is the same for every viewer, so a title is written into it only if guests can see that post's board and the board is not protected. Otherwise the file says "Post 1234" and gives the link. The link itself does not open for someone who may not see the post.
The listatt strip is checked per viewer with SMF's own board check. A post the viewer may not see is shown as "post N (not visible)", unlinked and unnamed; unapproved posts are treated the same way.
Protected boards (setting nexus_protected_boards, edited on the admin page): posts there cannot be linked, are never named, and are not counted. Links that touch such a post are dropped by the nightly job. Use this for material you must not let out, for example a post carrying a file you may not share.

4. The admin page

<forum>/Sources/nexus_link.php (administrators only, with a one-time form token).

Link two posts: the first post is the child, the second is the master side ("belongs under"). Give each post as a number, paste the post address (anything containing msg=1234 or msg1234), or type topic=7735 for a topic's first post (the result says which post was used). Choose the kind. Linking writes or refreshes NEXUS.md on every post of the project.
Links: the list of all links (newest first, up to 500) with Remove. Removing a link may split a project in two; both halves are refreshed, and a post left with no links loses its NEXUS.md.
Master post, chosen by hand: a post number, address or topic=N, then "Make master" or "Clear".
Projects: a list of up to 100 projects: master, size, first and latest date, locked count.
Protected boards: a comma-separated list of board numbers.

A link between the same two posts, of the same kind, in either order, is a repeat. A link that repeats an existing one (either way round), links a post to itself, or touches a missing or protected post is refused with a reason.

5. The pair command (for people and AIs)

One line, in the spirit of attachme: it links two posts, and writes NEXUS.md on every post of the resulting project.

php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_pair.php <A> <B> # A belongs under B (B = the master side)
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_pair.php <A> <B> --kind=K # K = contributes (default) | depends | supersedes | related | uses
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_pair.php <A> <B> --remove # remove the link(s) between A and B
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_pair.php <A> --show # print the whole project post A belongs to

A and B are post (message) numbers, or pasted post addresses containing msg=1234 or msg1234, or a topic (topic=7735), which means that topic's first post. If both a post and a topic appear, the post wins. When a topic is used, the command prints a NOTE: line saying which post it was taken to be. --dry-run says what would happen and changes nothing. Run it from the forum root; it finds Settings.php by itself (--settings=PATH to override).

It prints the version, then one result line, and sets an exit code, so a script or an AI can act on it:

Result line starts	Exit code	Meaning
`LINKED:`	0	done; the line says which way it points (for example `#1234 belongs under #1000`) and lists every post now in the project
`REMOVED:` / `WOULD REMOVE:` / `WOULD LINK:`	0	done, or what a dry run would do
`REFUSED:`	1	not done; the line says why (post missing, same post twice, protected board, already linked, unknown kind)
(error on stderr)	2	could not start (no Settings.php, database down, table missing)

Tip for AIs: run --show on a post first to see which project it already belongs to, then add the pair. The attachment gets the post's own member as owner, and when the command runs as root the file takes the owner and group of the attachment folder (as attachme does with chown), so the web server can manage it.

6. The toolkit (nexus_tool.php)

For everything that is not "link two posts": one command, many sub-commands. Run it from the forum root.

php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tool.php <command> [posts] [options] # php nexus_tool.php --help lists them

Posts are numbers, pasted addresses (msg=1234) or topic=N (the topic's first post). Anything that deletes, or can touch more than one project, is a dry run unless you add --apply. Only master, branch and assign act at once. Changes wait for the nightly job: if nexus_tidy.php is running, the command stops with exit code 3.

Command	What it does	Default
`master <post>`	Make that post the master of its project by hand	acts at once
`assign <post> <post of the project> [--under=POST]`	Put a post into a project (under its master, or under `--under`)	acts at once
`branch <post>`	Flag a post as the master of its own branch (any number of posts; it needs no posts under it)	acts at once
`branch <post> --clear` / `branch --list`	Remove the flag / list flagged posts	acts at once / read-only
`master <post> --clear`	Remove the hand-set master; it is worked out from the links again	acts at once
`master --list`	Projects that have a hand-set master	read-only
`projects`	One line per project: master, size, first and last date, locked count, posts	read-only
`show <post>`	The whole project that post belongs to (the NEXUS.md text)	read-only
`check`	Health report: links to gone posts, links into protected boards, loops, two masters in one project, flags on loose posts, NEXUS.md with no file, orphan or duplicate NEXUS.md, missing or out-of-date NEXUS.md. Exit 1 if anything is wrong	read-only
`export [--public] [--format=json\|csv] [--file=PATH]`	Everything as text: for a backup, or for another program such as ISE. JSON has every link, every project with step numbers, dates, parent, master and address. `--public` writes only titles that guests may see (all others read "Post N"). CSV can be read back by `import`	read-only
`move <old> <new>`	Move every link, and a hand-set master flag, from one post to another (a topic was reposted or recreated). Links that would duplicate or loop onto themselves are dropped	dry run
`unlink <post>`	Remove every link of one post; it leaves its project (the project may split)	dry run
`dissolve <post>`	Remove every link in the post's project, and its hand-set master, and delete its NEXUS.md files	dry run
`rebuild <post>` or `rebuild --all`	Rewrite NEXUS.md even when it looks up to date (after a title format change, or to be sure)	dry run
`purge`	Delete every NEXUS.md attachment and file. Links and master flags are kept; `nexus_tidy.php --apply` or `rebuild --all --apply` makes the files again. Use before uninstalling if you want the attachments gone	dry run
`import --file=PATH`	Load links from a text file. One per line: `A,B` (A belongs under B), `A,B,kind`, `A,kind,B`, or `master,POST`. `#` starts a comment. Each line is checked like a normal link. The dry run also catches a line repeated in the file, but not links that only become invalid because of other lines. NEXUS.md is written once at the end	dry run

Recipes

Choose the master yourself: nexus_tool.php master 1000. Put it back to automatic: master 1000 --clear. The post must already be linked into a project.
A wrong link: nexus_pair.php 1234 1000 --remove (add --kind=K to remove just one kind).
A topic was reposted or recreated: nexus_tool.php move <old post> <new post> --apply.
A post should not be in the project: unlink <post> --apply. The whole project is abandoned: dissolve <post> --apply.
Something looks odd: check, then nexus_tidy.php --apply repairs most things it finds.
A backup before bulk work: export --format=csv --file=/root/nexus_backup.csv; to restore after a dissolve, import --file=... --apply.
For ISE: export --public --file=nexus.json.
Many links at once: write the lines in a file, import --file=lines.txt (read the dry run), then --apply.

7. The nightly job

php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tidy.php [options] (run from the forum root)

Option	Meaning
(none)	Dry run. Prints what it would do, changes nothing.
`--apply`	Make the changes.
`--settings=PATH`	Settings.php to use. Default: searched upward from the script.
`--pause=MS`	Pause between posts (default 50) so the live forum is not starved.
`--stop`	Ordered stop: the running job finishes its current post, then exits. Nothing is killed.
`--help`	Option list.

What it does, in order:

Drops links whose post has gone or now sits in a protected board, and master flags that point at a gone post, a protected board, or a post in no project.
For every post that has a link or a NEXUS.md: creates a missing NEXUS.md, rebuilds one that is out of date (a title changed, a topic was locked, a post moved, a neighbour deleted), and deletes any NEXUS.md that has no remaining link or no post (orphans).
Deletes any NEXUS.md attached to no post at all.

Only attachments named exactly NEXUS.md are ever created, rewritten or deleted. Running it twice in a row changes nothing the second time. Only one copy can run (lock file nexus_tidy.lock). The version prints once when it starts. When to schedule it is the operator's decision; an example line for cron, the system's timer, is:

cd /var/www/html && nice -n 19 php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tidy.php --apply

Exit code 0 = finished, 1 = finished with errors (listed), 2 = could not start, 3 = already running.

8. Data

Table {db_prefix}nexus_branches (v2.2.0): id_msg (a post flagged master of its own branch), id_member, added; any number of rows. Table {db_prefix}nexus_masters: id_msg (the post chosen by hand as master), id_member, added. Table {db_prefix}nexus_links: id_link, id_from, id_to, kind, id_member (who added it), added (time). One row per link; a link is unique per (from, to, kind). The NEXUS.md files are derived from this table and can always be remade by the nightly job.

A NEXUS.md is stored like any attachment: a row in {db_prefix}attachments (name NEXUS.md, type text/markdown, approved) and a file in the current attachment directory, written by a temporary file then renamed.

9. Limits and safety notes

The project overview in NEXUS.md lists up to 200 posts; the listatt strip up to 40 (the line says how many are not shown); listatt draws up to 6 connected projects.
A uses link joins two separate projects only for display: it never changes either project's master, hierarchy or step numbers, and it is never followed when a project is gathered. Titles in the Other projects section follow section 3 (only guest-visible titles in the file; per-viewer in the listatt box; protected boards never).
The job and the page change no SMF source file and no other attachment.
The package installs without editing any SMF file; it creates the table with SMF's own table-creation call. Uninstall leaves the table and the NEXUS.md attachments.
A person can still download NEXUS.md, but it holds only the links and titles described in section 3.
Posts added by edit or reply need no action: links belong to a post, and a post keeps its identity when edited.
Moving a topic to another board is picked up the next time the job runs.

10. Version history

Version	Date	Change
2.2.2	2026-10-26	Fix: options after the post numbers were ignored. `nexus_pair.php A B --remove` tried to add a link, `--dry-run` after the posts did not make a dry run, and `nexus_tool.php master P --clear` / `dissolve P --apply` ignored the option (PHP's `getopt()` stops at the first plain argument). Options are now read anywhere on the line (`--kind=uses` or `--kind uses`), and an unknown option is an error. Affects `nexus_pair.php` and `nexus_tool.php`.
2.2.1	2026-10-26	Topic numbers everywhere: every display prints the topic number beside the post number ("#49331 (topic 7599)") - the NEXUS.md master line, hierarchy, chronology (new "Topic no." column; the old locked/open column is now "Topic status"), relations and other projects; the result lines of `nexus_pair.php` and `nexus_tool.php`; the `projects` list; the JSON export; and the admin page.
2.2.0	2026-10-26	Branch masters: `nexus_tool.php branch <post>` flags any number of posts as the master of their own branch (new table `nexus_branches`); NEXUS.md marks them BRANCH MASTER and counts the posts under each; `import`/`export` carry `branch,POST` lines; `move` carries the flag; the nightly job drops flags on gone or protected posts. Fixes: the `projects` list and `check` no longer join projects through `uses` links, and a post that only has a `uses` link is no longer reported as an orphan. Pairs with listatt 7.2.0.
2.1.0	2026-10-26	New link kind `uses`: joins two separate projects without merging them (each keeps its own master and outline); NEXUS.md gets an "Other projects" section; a single post can use a project. New command `nexus_tool.php assign <post> <post of the project> [--under=POST]`. `nexus_link.php` offers "uses". Pairs with listatt 7.1.0.
2.0.0	2026-10-26	Master by hand (new table `nexus_masters`; admin page form; `nexus_tool.php master`) and the maintenance toolkit `nexus_tool.php`: `projects`, `show`, `check`, `export` (JSON or CSV, `--public`), `move`, `unlink`, `dissolve`, `rebuild`, `purge`, `import`; deleting commands are dry runs unless `--apply`, and wait for the nightly job. Admin page lists projects. The nightly job drops stray master flags. Pairs with listatt 6.30.
1.2.0	2026-10-26	NEXUS.md names the master post, shows the hierarchy as an outline and the chronology (step numbers, first and latest date, span). The default pair is now "A belongs under B" (kind `contributes`); `related` stays for flat grouping. A link that would make a loop is refused. Pairs with listatt 6.29.
1.1.2	2026-10-26	FIX: post titles in NEXUS.md and on the admin page showed `"`, `&` and similar as text. SMF stores subjects already escaped; they are now decoded once. Angle brackets in a title become round brackets in NEXUS.md. Existing files are corrected by the nightly job (or by the next link on any post of the project).
1.1.1	2026-10-26	A post can be given as a topic (`topic=N` = that topic's first post) in `nexus_pair.php` and on the admin page; the result says which post was used.
1.1.0	2026-10-24	New link kind `related` (plain grouping, now the default); new command `nexus_pair.php` (link, `--remove`, `--show`, `--dry-run`); NEXUS.md attachments are owned by the post's member and, when made as root, by the folder's owner; the "current ones" lines appear only when a project has a `supersedes` link; admin page offers "related to".
1.0.0	2026-10-24	First release: link table, admin page, NEXUS.md showing the whole project, nightly tidy job, protected boards. Pairs with listatt 6.27.

listatt manual

listatt v7.3.0 (2026-10-26) -- List Attachments BBCode, Andrew's standard post header and flagship tool. Another collaboration between Andrew.human and Claude.ai, with the lady's touch only Gemini.ai can.

1. What it is

[listatt] is a BBCode tag. Put it in a post and the post shows a collapsible box listing every attachment on that post: order number, filename, size, a download button, an INFO button and a download count. Clicking a filename opens the file in the right viewer for its type instead of forcing a download.

If the post is linked into a project by the separate nexus package, the box also opens with the project outline (section 8).

2. Requirements

Needs	Status
SMF 2.0.x or 2.1.x	required
CollabCore v2.0+ with MsgTracker	required -- the install stops if `Sources/CollabCore/CollabCore.php` is missing
Who Downloaded Attachment mod	optional -- without it the Downloads count still shows and its panel says the log is not available
PDFBBCode (PDF.js viewer)	used for `.pdf` clicks
nexus package (v2.1.0 for connected projects, v2.2.0 for branch masters)	optional -- only for the project outline
AVIF Attachment Support (AVIF_v1.0.0)	only for `.avif` on SMF 2.0.x with PHP below 8.1

3. Install and uninstall

Install listatt_bbcode from the SMF Package Manager.

Step	SMF 2.0.x	SMF 2.1.x
Dependency check	`listatt_check_collabcore.php`	same
Files copied to `$sourcedir`	`ListAttBBC.php`, `view_attach.php`, `view_attach_range.php`, `listatt_posts.php`, `listatt_dupes.php`, `listatt_report.php`, `listatt_shared.php`	same
Hooks registered	`integrate_bbc_codes`, `integrate_pre_parsebbc`, `integrate_buffer`, plus `integrate_pre_include`	same
CSS	appended to `Themes/default/css/index.css` between `BEGIN listatt.css` / `END listatt.css` markers	same
Display.php	the one `parse_bbc()` call is patched (`listatt_display_install.php`, safe to re-run)	not touched -- the native `integrate_pre_parsebbc` hook gives the message id

Uninstall removes the hooks, the marked CSS block and the files above, and reverses the Display.php change on 2.0. listatt.css also ships alone, in case index.css is not writable or you prefer to add the styles by hand.

The three corpus-report result tables (batch_runs, batch_attach_report, batch_attach_orphans) are left for you to drop.

4. Using the tag

[listatt=Your heading here]x[/listatt]
[listatt]x[/listatt]

[listatt=Title] sets the heading, replacing "Attachments (N)".
Whatever sits between the tags is always discarded. It is only there because SMF rejects a post that reduces to nothing once known tags are stripped.
SMF 2.1: always put something (an x) between the tags. 2.1 deletes empty BBC tags when a post is saved.
Every approved, non-thumbnail attachment (attachment_type = 0) on the post is listed. There is no row limit.
With no attachments the tag shows "No attachments on this post." and a LISTATT TRACE line (kept on purpose).

5. The box

Columns: zero-padded order number (starts at 00), filename (link), size, DL (download), INFO, Downloads.

Themes: the box has a per-box theme switcher with 15 ISE themes plus 8 added in V6.12; the choice is remembered in the browser (localStorage).

Banner: the bottom line reads ListAttBBC | v7.3.0 | date | live HH:MM:SS. live means the fresh render is active; bbc means the buffer hook is not registered and a possibly cached copy is showing.

INFO panel: every real column of the attachment (ids, poster, type, hash, extension, size, downloads, width/height, mime type, approved, thumbnail) plus the true on-disk filename, which directory it is in ("base" = attachments/, "2" = attachments2/), a file-exists check, and for audio/video the technical metadata (sample rate, channels, duration, codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate) via getID3 or ffprobe. Downloads count opens a "who downloaded this" list (needs Who Downloaded Attachment).

Filename click routing

File type	Opens via
`.pdf`	PDFBBCode's PDF.js viewer
`.md`	`Sources/view_attach.php` -> rendered Markdown (LMV)
`.html` / `.htm`	`Sources/view_attach.php` -> rendered inline
audio, video, image (incl. `.avif`)	`CollabCore/listatt_media_viewer.html`
everything else	`CollabCore/ISE_text_viewer.html` (in-page find)

PDF rows also show [native] (the browser or OS handles the file via view_attach.php) and [pdf in chunks] (PDF.js on view_attach_range.php, which answers HTTP range requests so pages draw as they arrive; a linearized "Fast Web View" PDF shows page 1 soonest).

6. Live rendering and caching

SMF caches parse_bbc() output keyed on the post body, so new attachments would never refresh a cached list. listatt wraps its output in ... markers and an integrate_buffer hook re-renders each box fresh from the database on every page view. If the hook is missing, the cached render still shows (no failure).

7. Administrator pages (admins only, read-only)

Open from the INFO panel. Nothing is deleted or changed by any of them; to detach a file, use SMF's own Edit page.

Page	What it does
Forum-wide counts (in INFO)	posts with attachments, how many already carry `[listatt`, how many do not; cached 10 minutes when SMF caching is on
`listatt_posts.php`	every post owning an attachment, with subject, poster, date, file count, tagged yes/no, View and Edit; `?show=untagged` / `?show=tagged`
`listatt_dupes.php?attach=ID`	every post owning a byte-identical copy (size and extension, then SHA-256), up to 200 candidates
`listatt_report.php`	results of the corpus report job: every attachment in both directories, post-date order, every metric, problem flags, shared content
`listatt_shared.php`	every file held by 2+ posts, sortable, searchable, expandable, with Edit links and CSV export

The corpus report needs its job run first, from a shell: php Sources/CollabCore/attach_report.php (separate attach_report package; its manual is Sources/CollabCore/SMFBatch_manual.md). Run it with hashing on for the shared-files page. The two report pages keep your sort, search, filter and page in the address bar.

8. Nexus project outline

Closed by default (v7.3.0): the box shows the attachments first. If the post has nexus links, one line sits above the table: "Nexus project: 6 posts + 1 connected project - click to explore". Click it to open the hierarchy below; click again to fold it away. No JavaScript is used, and a post with no nexus links shows no line.

Opened, the hierarchy shows (nexus package, table {db_prefix}nexus_links):

a summary line: post count, master, first and last date, span, and how many are superseded or not visible;
an outline: each post indented under the post it belongs to, with its step number (order written, 1 = oldest), date and topic number ("topic 7599"; the number you give nexus as topic=7599; a post that is not its topic's first post reads "topic N, reply"); the master has a MASTER badge, this post is starred, superseded posts are struck through.

Rules (same as nexus): a post that contributes to or depends on another sits under it; a superseded post sits under its replacement; the master is the top post with the most posts beneath it; a master set by hand ({db_prefix}nexus_masters) goes to the top and is marked "chosen by hand"; with only related links there is no master. It reads the same from any post of the project. Up to 8 hops and 40 posts.

Who sees what: titles are checked per viewer with SMF's own board check. A post the viewer may not see is "post N (not visible)": step number kept, no title, link or date. Posts in boards named in the nexus_protected_boards setting are never shown or counted. Without the nexus tables nothing is drawn and the box is as before. listatt only reads; links are made with nexus.

Branch masters (v7.2.0)

With nexus v2.2.0, any number of posts can be flagged master of its own branch (nexus_tool.php branch <post>). The outline shows a BRANCH MASTER badge on each flagged post, beside the project's own MASTER badge (one per project). The flag changes only the label; the post stays where the links put it. Without the nexus nexus_branches table nothing changes.

Connected projects (v7.1.0)

A nexus uses link (nexus v2.1.0) joins two separate projects without merging them, for example a project that depends on the listatt project. The box then shows:

This project as a card: its own summary line, master and outline;
beneath it, one card for each project it uses (arrow down) or that uses it (arrow up), labelled "This project uses:" / "This project is used by:", each with its own master badge, outline, step numbers and dates. The post the link is made on is marked with a double arrow;
up to 6 connected projects (a project reached by several links is drawn once); a project the viewer may not see at all appears as "another project (not visible to you)"; projects in protected boards are never drawn;
a post with no project of its own but a uses link is drawn as "a single post, not in a project of its own", with the connected projects beneath.

Without uses links the box is exactly as before. Links are made with nexus: php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_pair.php <post of A> <post of B> --kind=uses.

9. Files in the package

package-info.xml, ListAttBBC.php, listatt_manual.md, readme.md, changelog.md, license.txt, listatt.css, install_css.php, uninstall_css.php, listatt_check_collabcore.php, listatt_register.php, listatt_unregister.php, listatt_display_install.php, listatt_display_uninstall.php, listatt_display_patch.xml (reference only), listatt_dl_log.sql (obsolete, never used), view_attach.php, view_attach_range.php, listatt_posts.php, listatt_dupes.php, listatt_report.php, listatt_shared.php.

10. Troubleshooting

Symptom	Cause / fix
List shorter than the real count	Cached render; the buffer hook (`integrate_buffer`) is not registered. Banner says `bbc`. Reinstall or re-run registration.
"No attachments on this post" on every post	CollabCore / MsgTracker missing or too old.
Tag disappears when the post is saved (2.1)	Nothing between the tags. Use `[listatt=Title]x[/listatt]`.
Single `<` shown (before 6.14)	Fixed in 6.14.
Fatal SQL error on download panel (before 6.2 / 6.14)	Fixed; panel now checks the log table exists.
`.avif` shows raw bytes	Needs 6.15 and, on 2.0 with PHP < 8.1, the AVIF Attachment Support package.
Box unstyled	`index.css` not writable at install; add `listatt.css` by hand.
Shared / report page empty	Run the corpus report job first.
No project outline	nexus not installed, or the post is not linked. It is folded by default: click "Nexus project ... click to explore".
Connected project card missing	needs nexus v2.1.0 and a `uses` link (`nexus_pair.php A B --kind=uses`); a project the viewer cannot see shows as "another project (not visible to you)"; only 6 are drawn.

11. Version history

Version	Date	Change
7.3.0	2026-10-26	The attachments come first: the nexus outline and connected projects are folded behind one line, "Nexus project: N posts - click to explore"; click to open or fold.
7.2.0	2026-10-26	Branch masters: the outline shows a BRANCH MASTER badge on every post flagged with nexus v2.2.0 (`nexus_tool.php branch`).
7.1.1	2026-10-26	The outline (and the master in the summary line) shows each post's topic number, the key used with `nexus_pair.php` / `nexus_tool.php`; a post that is not its topic's first post reads "topic N, reply".
7.1.0	2026-10-26	Connected projects drawn: a nexus `uses` link shows each project it uses, or that uses it, as its own card with its own master and outline.
7.0.0	2026-10-26	This manual added; version renumbered from 6.30. No code change.
6.30	2026-10-24	Outline honours a master chosen by hand (nexus v2.0.0).
6.29	2026-10-24	Project strip becomes an outline: master, hierarchy, step numbers, dates, span.
6.28	2026-10-24	Fix: titles showed `"` / `&` as text (double escaping).
6.27	2026-10-24	Nexus project strip: count line and one chip per post, roles, per-viewer titles, protected boards hidden.
6.26	2026-10	Layout of the two report pages (fixed columns, scroll in own box, view kept in address bar).
6.25	2026-10	Shared attachments page (`listatt_shared.php`) and link in INFO.
6.24	2026-10	Corpus report worker moves to `Sources/CollabCore/attach_report.php`.
6.23	2026-10	Corpus report worker leaves this package (own `attach_report` package).
6.22	2026-10	Full attachment corpus report page (`listatt_report.php`).
6.21	2026-10	"Find other posts that own this same file" (`listatt_dupes.php`).
6.20	2026-10	Counts section admin-only; posts list page (`listatt_posts.php`).
6.19	2026-10	Forum-wide attachment counts in INFO, cached 10 minutes.
6.18	2026-10	`[pdf in chunks]` via PDF.js on `view_attach_range.php`.
6.17	2026-10	`[native in chunks]` link (replaced by 6.18).
6.15	2026-10	`.avif` opens in the image viewer.
6.14	2026-09	SMF 2.1 support; plain-form `<` fix; download-log table check.
6.13	2026-09	Live re-render via `integrate_buffer`; thumbnail rows no longer listed.
6.12	2026-09	8 more themes by Gemini.
6.11	2026-09-13	CollabCore (MsgTracker) becomes a hard dependency.
6.10	2026-09	`[native]` link on PDF rows.
6.9	2026-09	`.html` opens rendered via `view_attach.php`.
6.7.1 / 6.7 / 6.6	2026-09	Viewer and AttachMeta moved into `Sources/CollabCore/`; paths fixed.
6.5	2026-09	Audio / video / image viewer.
6.4	2026-09	INFO panel becomes the full attachment truth (true filename, directory, exists, media metadata via AttachMeta).
6.3	2026-09	`.html` goes straight to the browser.
6.2	2026-09	Fix: dropped the private download-log table; reads Who Downloaded Attachment.
6.1	2026-09	Bold ordinal, Downloads count and who-downloaded panel.
6.0	2026-09	Ordinals from 00; click routing by type; 15 themes; INFO button.

Dates shown as "2026-10" or "2026-09" are the month only; the exact dates are in changelog.md and the header of ListAttBBC.php. Versions 6.8.2, 6.11 (apart from the dependency), 6.16 and 6.17's viewer dropdown are placeholders or were replaced before release.

Earlier builds on a separate "v7.x line" were reverted before 6.10 (see the header of ListAttBBC.php). This 7.0.0 is a different thing: it continues straight on from 6.30.

State: installed and verified on Live

Package	Version	Delivered as
nexus	2.2.2	nexus_v2.2.2.zip (10 files)
listatt	7.3.0	listatt_bbcode_v7.3.0.zip (22 files)

Operator confirmed both installed and verified on real SMF and MySQL.

What Nexus does now

A project = posts joined by links. Links are between posts (messages), not topics. Any post can be given as a post number, a pasted address, or topic=N (that topic's first post).
Link kinds ("A kind B"): contributes (default, A belongs under B), depends, supersedes, related, uses.
uses joins two separate projects without merging them. It is not followed when a project is gathered.
The project master is the top post with the most posts under it, unless set by hand (master). One per project.
Branch masters (2.2.0): any number of posts flagged "master of its own branch" (branch <post>, table nexus_branches). Label only; it does not move the post.
Every display prints the topic number beside the post number (2.2.1).
2.2.2 fix: options after the post numbers were silently ignored (PHP getopt() stops at the first plain argument). Options now work anywhere on the line; an unknown option is an error.

Commands (run from the forum root)

php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_pair.php <A> <B> [--kind=K] [--remove] [--show] [--dry-run]
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tool.php master <post> [--clear] | master --list
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tool.php branch <post> [--clear] | branch --list
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tool.php assign <post> <post of the project> [--under=POST]
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tool.php projects | show <post> | check | export | import
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tool.php move | unlink | dissolve | rebuild | purge (dry run unless --apply)

Admin page: <forum>/Sources/nexus_link.php (administrators only). There is no link button on the post itself; the operator decided to leave it as is.

listatt 7.3.0

Attachments come first. The nexus outline, connected project cards and BRANCH MASTER badges are folded behind one line, "Nexus project: N posts (+ N connected projects) - click to explore".
Outline shows step number, date and topic number for each visible post. Hidden posts show no title, link, date or topic. Protected boards are never shown.
Standalone listatt_manual.md added in 7.0.0 (full version history V6.0 onward).

The operator's intended hierarchy

Nexus (topic 8075, post 49863) project MASTER
  ├─ PDF (49333), LMV (49414), LTV (49570)
└─ Listatt (topic 7599, post 49331) BRANCH MASTER
└─ Collaborative (topic 7735, post 49493) BRANCH MASTER

Commands to reach it (may already be run; check with nexus_tool.php show topic=8075):

php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_pair.php 49331 49493 --remove --kind=contributes
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_pair.php 49493 49863 --remove --kind=contributes
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_pair.php 49493 49331
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tool.php branch topic=7599
php Sources/CollabCore/nexus_tool.php branch topic=7735

Old related links among 49331, 49333, 49414, 49570, 49493 and 49863 are harmless and can stay.

Open items

Not built: a branch-master form on the admin page (command only); a link button on the post itself (declined for now).
Not replied to: the earlier "Hacking attempt..." error on listatt_shared.php; raise it only if the operator does.
Legacy zipper: the operator's own zipper is not available in this environment. Every zip this session used plain zip -X, checked with Python zipfile (no data descriptors). The release card says "missing" each time.
Deployment timing is always the operator's call.

Lessons from this session

A "project" in Nexus is only a set of linked posts; a post on its own has no status. Say so before offering ways to "assign a project".
Check the real output before explaining. Two misreadings came from guessing which posts were peers and which were children.
Anything that parses command-line options needs a test with the options in every position.
