Conversation Transcript: tar Commands and gzip vs bzip2

Date: Sunday, October 11, 2026 (Australia/Sydney) Prepared for: Tech Board Participants: Andrew (operator) and Claude

Query 1 (04:16)

tar commands

Claude: [October 11, 2026, 04:16:49 AM]

Create

tar -czvf archive.tar.gz dir/ # gzip
tar -cjvf archive.tar.bz2 dir/ # bzip2
tar -cJvf archive.tar.xz dir/ # xz
tar -cvf archive.tar dir/ # no compression

Extract

tar -xzvf archive.tar.gz # into current dir
tar -xzvf archive.tar.gz -C /target # into /target (must exist)
tar -xvf archive.tar.xz # modern GNU tar auto-detects compression
tar -xzvf archive.tar.gz path/in/archive # one file or directory only

List without extracting

tar -tzvf archive.tar.gz

Useful extras

tar -czvf a.tar.gz --exclude='*.log' dir/ # skip patterns
tar -rvf archive.tar newfile # append (uncompressed tars only)
tar -czf - dir/ | ssh host 'tar -xzf - -C /dest' # stream over ssh, no temp file
tar -xzvf a.tar.gz --strip-components=1 # drop the top-level directory
tar -czpvf a.tar.gz dir/ # preserve permissions (-p, default for root on extract)

Flag key: c create, x extract, t list, z gzip, j bzip2, J xz, v verbose, f file (must be followed by the archive name), C change directory.

If you have a specific job in mind, such as backing up a forum directory or moving a tree between your boxes, tell me and I'll give the exact command.

Query 2 (04:28)

which is better gzip if bzp2

For most jobs, gzip is the better choice, and bzip2 is rarely worth using now.

	gzip	bzip2
Speed	Fast	Several times slower, especially to compress
Compression	Good	Slightly smaller, usually about 5-15%
Decompression	Very fast	Slow
Availability	Everywhere	Almost everywhere, but not guaranteed on minimal systems

Use gzip for routine work such as backups, shipping files between your boxes, and anything you'll unpack often. The extra size is a small price for the speed.

bzip2 only makes sense when the archive is stored long term and you care about every byte. Even then, xz usually beats it, with a better ratio at similar compression speed and much faster decompression. For maximum shrinkage use tar -cJvf, and for everyday use tar -czvf.

Text-heavy data like SMF dumps and logs compresses well with all three. Already-compressed files such as PDFs, JPGs, MP4s and zips barely shrink at all, so gzip is the sensible choice there.

Query 3 (08:31)
