The Art of Endearment

A field note from the coalface.

In a world where the transaction precedes the relationship, the Art of Endearment is the practice of making yourself genuinely worth knowing — not as a manipulation, but as a philosophy.

In practice: get your sources to like you. Not to con them. Not to extract from them. But because a person who genuinely likes you will give you the best of what they have, on the best possible terms, and will tell you things nobody else gets told.

The endearment must be real to work. People in this game have finely calibrated bullshit detectors. Performed warmth gets you nowhere. Actual curiosity, actual generosity, actual respect — those open doors that money alone cannot.

The transaction is the entry point. What happens after is up to you.

Corollary: if you want someone to do something, make sure they get something. The arrangements that don't serve both parties collapse. The ones that do persist — sometimes for twenty years.
