Apache webserver *hangs* as it runs out of all available free slots

short term remedy is to restart the Apache daemon via Linux command: "service httpd restart"

i am leaving this open and if it recurs soon then i will back off the last few software mods but until then, this is the official problem report.

note: http://forum.drugs-and-users.org/server-status wasn't available either so i am looking at a possible "backdoor" approach at http://serverfault.com/questions/551486/reserve-one-http-slot-for-server-status

this has only ever happened 3 times and it was a bug in a mod. or an attack of some sort, i don't know as i don't monitor the system that carefully.

just report any recurrence here or email me at smfadmin@forum.drugs-and-users.org if the site should hang.

Out of curiosity, isnt there a security risk in spelling out everything running on the forum explicitly like this? It seems like it opens us up to many different potential attacks that are tailored to the specific mods and options that you lay out for all to see.

Then again, maybe Im wrong.

it's only available to members so i think the risk is small.

the database is the crown jewels and that is well locked away, available from the command line and another secured interface. Secure Shell (SSH) is a cryptographic network protocol that protects it.

Newbie's don't have access to this board, so that's a little help. I like to post the software changes and issues so that someone can step into my role and quickly have a good understanding on how it was built and problems handled.

besides, not many people appear to be interested in our little site here but if that changes, i can change access to these technical boards.

but for now, i believe in technical information sharing until proven otherwise.

thanks for caring enough to be concerned ... and to make you feel more at ease, there are a few VERY technically advanced people that check out what i'm up to from time to time and they'll let me know if i am opening too many "doors" or where i'm screwing up.
