Profile Email Addresses

I'm not sure how easy/possible this would be, but is there anyway to change the way our profile allows people to contact us by email? I ask, because on opiophile, you could set your email address to your profile and it hid it from all regular members, but you could email someone thru the forum, and if they chose to respond, then it would essentially reveal your email address to them.

What I'm getting at is my name is in my email address (and maybe I shouldn't have registered with it, but I use it for everything) and while I could give a fuck less if 95% of you know my real name, I don't want it publically displayed on my profile. I imagine other people probably feel the same about their email addresses for a variety of reasons, but then again, it could just be I'm the only dumbass registering to this site with my name in my email.


edit: after posting this, I clicked the stickyed thread at the top, didn't realize people were replying to that with their suggestions and saw someone already brought up the email address thing. I guess I just saw the check box for "Allow other members to contact me by email" and saw my own profiles email address and assumed everyone could see it (and then unchecked allow other members to contact me)

I want to stop Regular members emailing so be sure to turn this off. everyone.

I will move to no email between regular members default if I find one.

Chipper set it so regular members couldn't see each others e-mail addys a while ago.  Or so I thought.  Only mods / admins can see members e-mails.

Why don't you want regular members to e-mail each other Chipper?

I'd be curious to know the answer to this question too.  It seems to me that enabling members to email each other off board is one of the best ways to keep against the rules shit off the board, as well as it also facilitates communication between members so they become closer (not that I don't feel I've known half these fuckers half my life), which makes it more of a community.  IMO.

I support your decision.  You can certainly do whatever you want.  Solicitation involving DAU is unforgivable. 

But would it really affect us if members got each other's e-mails from here, then they took it off board and ended up soliciting via off-board e-mails?

I can see how you'd be worried that they met each other here.  But would there really be a huge risk for DAU if the solicitation actually took place off-board via private e-mails?

Plus, if members are only to communicate with each other via PM, wouldn't that make it more likely that members solicited through PMs?

Like I said, I support whatever decision you make, but I also think e-mailing between members fosters friendship and community, like CZ was saying.  I think that sorta outweighs a minor risk that DAU may potentially have b/c the members initially e-mailed through here.

If I remember correctly, I think regular members can see the "allow other members to e-mail you" check box. 

A regular member can see their e-mail addy in their profile, but they can't see other people's e-mail addys.  You fixed that back in June I think when you turned on PM's for all members.

right then, the current setting to enable/disable users emailing you stands.

it's more social this way too, i can't deny that. as long as you keep it off-board (many become facebook friends etc.) it's less worry for us.

I see that I already have it set up to the correct email and the box checked.  Why doesn't one of you guys send me a test and let's see if it works.  It's in Profile/Account settings or something like that.

yeah, it works well. took me months to get email flawless, tho'.

but now it just works. yay.
