Anthropic say:

We took a partially trained model and we put it in a limited environment that's just doing coding tasks. And when it completes a task, it gets a reward.

But the model can also find shortcuts, so ways to get the reward without doing the work, which is essentially, which is cheating.

And in this test, we reward it over and over for essentially taking the shortcut. Now you'd think, okay, the model is just going to get really good at cheating at code.

But something different happens. It actually becomes broadly misaligned. It starts lying, it tries to sabotage research, it does things that have nothing to do with a coding exercise.

They found that models trained this way became broadly evil. So they started praising dictators or arguing that humans should be enslaved by machines. The model develops a kind of generalized corruption, a bad character.

And here's what's wild: when researchers reran the same training but then told the model that in this case cheating was okay, that it was just a game, then the broad alignment misalignment didn't happen.

The resulting model cheated on code and nothing else, which is to say that the story it inferred about its behavior actually determined the kind of thing that it became.

This blew my mind when I first heard it, because this is how we work. And I saw my own self in this research: the stories that we inhabit, it shapes who we become.

What is a tensor?

Well, the first thing you hear when you start machine learning is people tell you to pick up a framework, TensorFlow or PyTorch. The word is sitting right there in the name, but in our learning journey, we have come so far that we have somehow forgotten the basics. So let me break it down to you in under two minutes.

Forget the scary word for a second. A tensor is just a container of numbers, and that's the entire concept.

The only question is how many dimensions does the container have? Let's build one from scratch and start with a single number five.

Just one value, that's zero dimension, a scalar.

And now put numbers in a line, that's one dimension, a vector. Now we add second row underneath it, and you have rows and columns, two dimensions. That's a matrix.

Now to find any number, you need two things: which row, which column.

Moving forward, take this whole grid and stack another behind it, three dimensions. That's a tensor.

Clear: which row, which column, three directions to count in. You can keep stacking, four dimensions, five dimensions, same number, just more directions.

And here's a trick you can use in ML classes: to know the number of dimensions, just count the brackets.

One bracket, one dimension. Two brackets, two dimension. Three brackets, three dimension. Brackets are the shape. Moving forward, did you know that you have thousands of tensors in your pocket?

Every photo in your phone is one, a grid of numbers, red, blue, and green, all stacked up. Each number is just how bright that tiny dot is. Your phone doesn't store a picture of your face, it stores neatly arranged boxes of numbers. And it's not just images.

The sentence you type into Chat GPT, the model can't read words, so your sentence gets chopped into tokens, small pieces, and each token becomes a long list of numbers called embedding. One token, one vector.

Your whole sentence, a grid of those vectors, a matrix. A batch of sentences processed together, three dimensions. Text, audio, or even model weights.

Everything in deep learning travels in tensors, and that's the secret behind frameworks named themselves after. A tensor is numbers in a container, and machine learning is just math flowing through those containers.

That's literally flow in TensorFlow.

Is the funniest person in your friend group also the smartest ?

Researchers looked into this, they asked two hundred seventy college students to write something funny. One task was to write a caption for a New Yorker cartoon.

Another was to finish a joke that starts with "That food was so bad." And another was to write a funny definition for a made-up phrase like "serial bus." Then judges rated how funny each answer was.

The students also took tests measuring three abilities: vocabulary, reasoning like spotting patterns in number series, and something called retrieval, which is basically how many words you can pull from memory in one minute, like naming as many animals as you can.

All three were linked to how funny their answers were. Vocabulary had the strongest link. Word retrieval came next. Puzzle style reasoning had the weakest.

But here's the twist: people who do well on one of these tests tend to do well on the others. So the researchers asked, "Once you account for that overall mental ability, which skill still matters?"

Overall mental ability itself had the biggest link to humor. Vocabulary and puzzle reasoning didn't add anything beyond it, but word retrieval still did.

It predicted humor even after accounting for overall ability. So being good at puzzles gave no extra boost beyond overall ability.

Being good at pulling words from memory did. Researchers think that fits how jokes work. You need two ideas that don't belong together and the right words to make them collide. So are funnier people smarter? In this study, students who wrote funnier answers tended to score higher on overall mental ability.

They were also better at pulling words from memory.

How does VLM serve twenty-four times more requests ?

Here's what this engine does, what it invented, and how to run it.VLM is an open-source inference engine and you give it a model's weights from Hugging Face, and it serves that model to many users at once through an OpenAI-compatible API.

It runs on NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel GPUs, TPUs, and more. So what makes it fast? Its key innovation is paged attention. Every request keeps a KV cache, its notes on past tokens.

Older servers reserved one big slab and wasted sixty to eighty percent. VLM cuts it into small blocks, handed out only when needed, like pages in an operating system.

But memory is only half the story; the second idea is continuous batching.

A normal batch waits for its longest answer to finish, leaving GPU slots idle. VLM drops a new request into a slot the moment one frees up.

So how do you use it ? Install it with Pip.

Then run VLM serve with any Hugging Face model like QuEn three point eight.

That starts a server on port eight thousand.

Point any OpenAI client at that address, and your app now talks to your own model. Paged memory and continuous batching are how VLM serves up to twenty-four times more requests than plain Hugging Face transformers.
