Is the funniest person in your friend group also the smartest ?

Researchers looked into this, they asked two hundred seventy college students to write something funny. One task was to write a caption for a New Yorker cartoon.

Another was to finish a joke that starts with "That food was so bad." And another was to write a funny definition for a made-up phrase like "serial bus." Then judges rated how funny each answer was.

The students also took tests measuring three abilities: vocabulary, reasoning like spotting patterns in number series, and something called retrieval, which is basically how many words you can pull from memory in one minute, like naming as many animals as you can.

All three were linked to how funny their answers were. Vocabulary had the strongest link. Word retrieval came next. Puzzle style reasoning had the weakest.

But here's the twist: people who do well on one of these tests tend to do well on the others. So the researchers asked, "Once you account for that overall mental ability, which skill still matters?"

Overall mental ability itself had the biggest link to humor. Vocabulary and puzzle reasoning didn't add anything beyond it, but word retrieval still did.

It predicted humor even after accounting for overall ability. So being good at puzzles gave no extra boost beyond overall ability.

Being good at pulling words from memory did. Researchers think that fits how jokes work. You need two ideas that don't belong together and the right words to make them collide. So are funnier people smarter? In this study, students who wrote funnier answers tended to score higher on overall mental ability.

They were also better at pulling words from memory.
