Question about TAILS
« on: September 23, 2016, 11:59:00 AM »
Hey everyone I have a question about TAILS and I'm sorry if this has been answered before.  I did look around a bit and didn't see it anywhere.

I have run the TAILS os before and I know how to, but my question is this:  If I disconnect my hard drives before I start the computer would that work and would it damage my computer in anyway?  I know that TAILS only runs in memory, but I just would feel safer if my hard drives were air gapped, but I do not know enough about computers to know if that is even doable or if it would damage anything.  Also I have dedicated graphics cards in my computer and I am wondering if they have any security risks similar to hard drives and if I should disconnect them while running TAILS as well?  My computer is a custom ordered desktop running windows 10. I have a solid state drive that has my operating system on it and I also have a 2TB(I think) conventional hard drive.  I have 2 nvidia 980ti graphics cards as well. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Sure you could disconnect power/data cables and still boot & run tails fine; just make sure the power is off and has been for a few minutes, and ground yourself before you go touching shit inside the case.

I think the effort is a waste of time, tails won't touch your hd unless you tell it to.

Thanks thats good to know.  I might just not do it if it is a waste of time.  I just got some blank dvd's so I think I'm gonna get TAILS again and use it.  Last time I used it waslike one or 2 years ago on a different computer.

Truly paranoid people used to reccomend getting a cheap, used laptop for that kind of stuff.  There are ways to identify your machine, although if they would stand up in court or even be worth the effort is still a mystery to me.  I guess that you need to take precautions that are relative to the risk you are taking.
