Police find 10 drug labs or crops every week across Adelaide

POLICE are uncovering about 10 cannabis crops and drug laboratories a week across Adelaide as they continue to crack down on suburban suppliers.

A Freedom of Information document, obtained by Family First MP Robert Brokenshire, showed 773 drug operations were found across the six metropolitan police districts from December 2013 to May.

The Holden Hill district recorded the highest number with 201 uncovered, followed by Elizabeth, 180, Western Adelaide, 135, and South Coast, 103.

The Sturt and Eastern districts each had less than 100 drug labs or cannabis crops seized, with 96 and 58 respectively.

Serious and Organised Crime Branch Detective Superintendent Graham Goodwin said the majority of the drugs were hydroponically-grown cannabis.

“Historically the majority of labs located in SA are set up to manufacture amphetamine type substance, such as methamphetamine and ecstasy,” Det-Supt Goodwin said.

“However, more recently police have located labs for manufacturing other drugs such as steroids and synthetic cannabis.”

Police launched Operation ATLAS in August to crackdown on the manufacture and supply of illicit drugs, such as ecstasy and ice.

So far the operation has seized nearly 8.5kg of methamphetamine, 13,000 ecstasy tablets, uncovered 62 clandestine labs and made 456 arrests.

“It’s clear in SA there has been a consistent increase in methamphetamine related arrests and seizures,” Det-Supt Goodwin said.

“South Australia is not alone in this — the same picture is emerging across the country.”

The Australian Crime Commission report, released earlier this year, showed the number of national drug arrests had increased 27.2 per cent over the past decade.

Mr Brokenshire said despite work by police there were still drugs on the streets and the community and State Government must help curb the problem.

“The reality is police are trying their best, but there would still be a lot of people who haven’t been caught which is very concerning,” Mr Brokenshire said.

“The problem we have now is mobile clandestine labs in cars, which are hard to find for police.

“The community can’t leave this problem just up to the police, they need to work closer with them and report suspicious behaviour and dob in the people who are supplying the drugs.”

Mr Brokenshire said the government should start a “health and harm” education program through the media, similar to advertisements relating to tobacco and alcohol.

Police Minister Tony Piccolo said police were proactive in the detection of all illicit drugs.

“The fact that so many were discovered is proof of this,” Mr Piccolo said.

Anyone with information about drug dealing or the manufacture or possession of illegal drugs is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. People can remain anonymous.
