Title: Localized pins and needles present only with tourniquet?!
Post by: theSWPK on November 07, 2015, 05:03:11 PM
Let me start by saying that I HATE IV morphine, particularly MS contins, but I do them because, hey, it's free morphine.

A friend recently showed me his tech for injecting morphine. We were using the Watson 15s.
My friend normally injects like I do, staying tied until the injection is complete, then releasing. For this, he released right after register (the right way). No intense local pins and needles sensation. Depending on dosage, pins will occur at the typical sites, forehead, palms, soles of feet, etc. But not the oh so terrible localized sensation.

It's normally so bad for me, even at 30mg, I have to hold 2 cold packs or cold drinks on the site and the back of the site. Sometimes I mix/inject before some diphenhydramine. It's terrible.

Not using a tourniquet, I didn't experience anything negative. Slight itch, no histamine lumps. Nothing.

What's the deal? Does the whole extra second of time the morphine sits in the vein really make that difference?

Anyone else?

Anybody? I'm very interested to hear from you guys, because I can't find any pertinent information on the subject. Only general info on histamine release.

I hail thee, sons of morphine!

Just a normal 1ml barrel?

Maybe a bit of morph solution leaked out of the vien because of the increased pressure of the tie.

nerve damage, in my experience ...

No leaking. Perfect shots. If I loosen the tourny while injecging, then no pins. It's only when I loosen AFTER. Even immediately after injection.

Yes 1ml barrel.

If I take diphenhydramine 30 min before, or mix with the shit, it will reduce the sensation.

You guys know how sometimes when. You Iv heroin, dilaudid, and of course morphine, you can get the raised histamine reaction skin hive. Usually small but I've seen them go wild up the arm. I've seen this occur with a perfect injection, no miss, removing needle after tourniquet removal.

We know that morphine reacts with the skin (when injected sub q or IM or just missed) to produced a raised itchy area.
My guess is that since a tourniquet halts blood flow, that it gives the morphine more time to react with the vein wall and subcutaneous tissues, and even if it's only a third of a ssecond, gives it enough time to start reacting.

Although I've been an Iv user for 5 or 6 years, I rotate frequently and still have great thick spiderweb networks of veins on both arms. Also other people get the same thing. Even users who rarely IV.

I get the same reaction, but I'm almost certain it's from not taking the tourniquet off. I have certain veins that I guess don't get enough pressure and if I push the syringe all the way in (thru the vein) then pull back until it registers, tourny or not I get a rush and can tell it was totally in the vein, but some spilled out and I get bad hives.

Try dipping the syringe in water after sucking up, not pushing thru the vein (barely pierce your skin, register then push it down into vein) and take the tourny off when you register. Also after you've finished injecting, wait a good few seconds to start pulling the syringe out (dunno if that really makes a difference but it'll Jeri the hole in your vein plugged until the morphine is well gone)

Not doing the stuff I just said causes me to get hives/burning/typical histamine shit. Not every vein does it, but the veins that do do it every time I poke thru or leave tourniquet on

Edit: that doesn't actually explain every time I get hives though. If I do a huge shot of morphine (120mg Avinza/kadian, mscontin don't do it) I can do all those things and I still get the burning itching hives and its like it literally follows the vein down my arm and stays localized around the vein. But that's pretty rare and only happens on big big shots

Happens to me everytime, little red itchy, hive-ish bumps.  Normally goes away in a few hours.  I used to think I was missing a little at the end or s something...but I've been assured it's just a normal reaction.

Have you tried muscling a small amt to see if you get the same reaction? You could skin-pop like 1 unit and probably be able to tell. If you react the same, you're surely somehow missing or leaking out of the vein.

I bet it's leaking, either from poking through the vein or leaking back out into tissue when you pull the rig out. Do you put pressure on the site immediately after you pull the rig?

I'm not hating, I had super easy veins for a long time and so even tho I've been active long, I've never been great at hitting myself, and now I just don't have the patience for it. Fuckit I'll muscle a speedball, I just can't be bothered with fishing. On a good day with perfect rigs I'll try, otherwise, meh..
