Title: "Hymns of A Needle Freak"
Post by: Daughter of Dionysus on September 30, 2015, 03:32:49 PM
List your favorite songs about addiction
And/or drugs in general

ALICE IN CHAINS (Not Jerry Fuckwad Cantrell and his band of sycophants)
~DIRT~
...
"You, you are so special
You have the talent to make me feel like dirt"

~SLUDGE FACTORY~
(Just the beginning of this song
With Layne's aaaahhh ooooowww oh yeah reminds me
Of doing a shot. The pain of the poke the relief of the dope)
"You insult me in my home
You're forgiven this time
Things go well
You're eyes dilate
You shake and I'm high"
...
"Once again you see it in
Discolored skin
Gives you away"

K's CHOICE
~NOT AN ADDICT~
"It's not a habit it's cool
I feel alive
If you don't have it you're on the other side"
...
"The deeper you stick it in your vein
The deeper the thoughts
There's no more pain"
...
"I'm not an addict
Maybe, that's a lie"

AIC
~GOD SMACK~
"What in Gods name have you done?
Stick your arm for some real fun"
...
"So your sickness weighs a ton
And God's name is SMACK for some"
~JUNKHEAD~
"A good night
The best in a long time
A new friend turned me onto an old favorite
Nothing better than a dealer who's high
Be high, convince em to buy"
*FOR ME THIS ONE SUMS IT UP SO PERFECT*

3 DOORS DOWN
~LOSER~
"This is getting old
Well I can't break these chains that I hold
There's nothing left if this mind of my soul
Addiction needs a pacifier
But the buzz of this poison
Has taken me higher"

EMINEM
~MY MOM~
...
"Cuz my Mom loved valium
And lots of drugs
She's the reason why I'm high what I'm high on"

SIXTO RODRIGUEZ
~SUGARMAN~
...
"Silver magic ships you carry
Jumpers coke
Sweet Mary Jane"
...
"Sugarman
Met a false friend
On a lonely dusty road
Lost my heart
When I found it
It had turned to dead black coal"

AMY WINEHOUSE
~REHAB~
"Didn't get a lot of your class
But I know it don't come in a shot glass"
...
"He said I just think you're depressed
Just me?
Yeah maybe
And the rest?"
*I know this song is like so 2007
But OMG the talent that girl had*
<RIP AMY>

RIP Mr. Layne Thomas Staley
I REALLY HATE using this name in association
With addiction
B/c Layne was so much more than an addict

Love your choices and love AIC. The only one I need to add would be "angry chair". Song is my go to and very personal to me. My list won't be as pretty and won't have lyrics as I'm on my phone but I would say off hand...."fall to pieces" by velvet revolver...."hurt" Johnny Cash edition (sorry NIN!)....and most recently "hold it kid" by the weeks. Loving the thread tho!!

He's probably the worst rapper ever lol

but I can't stand the whole "white trash rap" scene, none of them have any real talent when it comes to lyricism or even when it comes to delivery.

But who doesn't like oxycotton- that song is a classic and it banged hard on my first subs I had in my 94 mustang

Good list.

I always liked that K's Choice; "Not an Addict" because it came out when I was hitting my stride as a go for broke junkie.

Than that SOAD "She's Like Heroin" I THINK should be attributed to LA's mad men, The Gun Club in the early 80's but I could be wrong.

I don't know that it is dope realted so much but it reminds me of thise days; "Smells like Sex and Candy" by Marcy Playground.

Drugs and drug use references are all though pop music for so long. It should be considered a musical genre.

Aren't those first years of serious drug use like the beginning of a great love affair with the intense, can do no wrong early days , the set bliss going all the way to the painful breakup? In South Florida I copped every day after work an doften early before work and as soon as that warm glow enveloped me seconds after pushing the plunger home I often "said  "Hello old friend. I've missed you today."

You mean the "She's like Heroin to me, she cannot miss a vein."?  Yep, I've heard it before, but the songs are unrelated near as I can tell.  Completely different lyrics.  The System of a Down song is really weird, a person could interpret it to be about transgenders as well as Heroin itself.  It's just one of my personal faves, that's all.

The Black Crowes "She talks to Angels"

"she dont mention the word addiction in certain company"
"She got her eyes black as night now, and she pulls the shades down tight, she got a smile now when the pain comes, oh the pain, the pain gonna make everything all right
and she says she talks to Angels, she says they cal her out by name..."

Lucretia My Reflection - cover by Destroid (originally by the Sisters of Mercy)

Such a great version. There's one line in the song, "hot metal and methedrine."
So I guess that's enough to make it on this list.

Oh, and "Sue" by Brian Jonestown Massacre - about a junkie chick.

I'll even put the video in here so y'all don't have nary an excuse to not listen to the song.

Oh oh, and "Totally Wired" by The Fall

This song captures the essence of amphetamines if any does, this one does.

You don't have to be weird to be wired.
You don't have to be strange to be strangled.
When the goin' gets weird, the weird go pro.

Elliott Smith - Needle In the Hay (or any Elliott Smith song, really)
Nico - Chelsea Girls (also the Velvet Undeground, obviously)
Bright Eyes - Spent On Rainy Days
Perfume Genius - AWOL Marine (not about needles, but it's about a guy going gay for pay to buy drugs for his wife)
Cat Power - Lived In Bars

There are so many, but those are a few that come to mind.

I had the pleasure of being
In Layne Staley's presence ~10 times
Hey used to party in New Orleans
And back in those days
Hero1 was the dude to contact
If you wanted to party in New Orleans

I REALLY HATED using ANY of his songs
In this thread
B/c he was SO MUCH MORE THAN AN ADDICT
He was a true artist thru and thru
Have you ever seen any of his ink drawings?
Or listened to Mad Season- Above?
He wrote that whole album

I know that most people don't think of Don Henley when they think of songs about addiction/ drugs, but his lyrics to "The Genie" knock it out of the park and absolutely tell my own story....minus the famous musician who used to be a part of The Eagles part of it!

Is this what you wanted?
Did you even think twice?
Didn't they tell you that anything that feels this good
Comes with a price
It gave you such a rush
Now you think you've had enough
It's not that easy to walk away
This is the hard stuff

You can't get the genie back in the bottle
You can't get the genie back in the bottle
You can't get the genie back in the bottle
You can't get the genie back in the bottle
And everything matters, everything matters
Every little thing you do

That smoldering tingle under your skin
That sweet, delicious, but not-so-original sin
And when the world becomes too little or too much
The shadow mind contrives
The triumph and the tragedy that we invite into our lives
And Adam glanced back at the tree
As he was leaving
Said, ¡°Baby, that's the price we pay
Knowing is grieving

(chorus)

And the past comes back to smack you around
For all the things you thought you got for free
For the arrogance to think that you could somehow
Defy the laws of gravity
These are lessons in humility
Penitence for past offenses
Consequences, consequences

(chorus)

Ummm, I D K about "Genie" knocking Gil Scott Heron "Home is Where the Hatred Is" out of the ballpark..   IN fact, I'd put money on this track blowing all others out of tha ballpark

"Home is where I live inside my white powder dreams
Home was once an empty vacuum that's filled now with my silent screams
Home is where the needle marks
Try to heal my broken heart
And it might not be such a bad idea if I never, if I never went home again"

Daughter of Dionysus- wait what!! You have me like foaming at the mouth I would honestly love to hear any and all stories you have on him and that New Orleans situation! And to be honest no I didn't know that much about mad season or his art. I fell in love with the band because even though it might sound weird but his voice kinda reminded me of Jim Morrison with the feel mellow feel and the loud raspy tone and The Doors were always my favorite. I haven't read anything beyond his wiki page where it did say he loved art and would sit in his apartment make art and get fucked up. Seeing him play live was always my favorite as he was always so god damn amazing (on YouTube on course) I will check out Mad Season and please please any cool info or stories you have to enlighten me on my ignorance would be awesome! Also on a side note I think I saw you say something along the lines of not liking Jerry Cantrell which I would love to know why as I have never heard a negative thing about him and I know he did write a lot of the songs for AIC but then again I love their music but don't have tooooo much knowledge on the band itself outside of their albums.

I don't like Jerry 'can't tell' Cantrell b/c he was running to their manager, Susan Silverman, and saying that he was trying his best to get Layne clean when in fact he wasn't. He was just telling Susan that so that he could have more control over the band.

He was referred to as 'can't tell' Cantrell b/c you could never tell what kind of mood he was going to be in. Nor could you ever tell if he would play Layne's "friend" or be his natural dick self.

I also think it was a douche move for him to sue Layne's Mom for the rights to the name Alice in Chains (Layne thought of that name, Jerry wanted to call it Alice n Chains) only so he could replace the singer. I'm sorry but you can replace a guitar player but there is no way you can replace Layne's voice.

Some of these things I know from Layne himself.

Think about the line "New Orleans gotta get, pin cushion, medicine"
Where do you think that line came from?

I'm not gonna use this thread for stories about Layne

(Wow this is the first time in the history of opiophile or this site that I have postd like this)

Google AIC HEADBANGERS BALL NEW ORLEANS CEMETARY
That happens to be the cemetary that hero's grandma is burried in

Jerry claims to love Layne and goes on and on about how they were brothers which is bullshit. Layne hated Jerry. For a very good reason. Layne actually wrote most of those songs but when Jerry was running back and forth to Susan he convinced her to give him writing credit b/c if Layne were to get ALL that money he'd just kill himself (which is how he convinced columbia and Susan)

hero asked me not to go into it anymore b/c he knew Layne for quite sometime.

Layne only brought Demri to New Orleans two or three times

A lot of people don't know that side of Jerry

A Perfect Circle – Weak And Powerless

Tilling my own grave to keep me level
Jam another dragon down the hole
Digging to the rhythm and the echo of a solitary siren
One that pushes me along and leaves me so

Desperate and ravenous
I'm so weak and powerless over you

Someone feed the monkey while I dig in search of China
White as Dracula as I approach the bottom

Desperate and ravenous
So weak and powerless over you

Little angel go away
Come again some other day
The devil has my ear today
I'll never hear a word you say
He promised I would find a little solace
And some peace of mind
Whatever, just as long as I don't feel so

Desperate and ravenous
I'm so weak and powerless over you
Desperate and ravenous
So weak and powerless over you

Yeah, Warren Zevon's "Carmelita" is about the best heroin song ever.  "Things to do in Denver When You're Dead" isn't explicitly about dope, but is to me.

For real? Nobody has Mentioned the Velvet Underground yet?  Gotta believe I missed it, but I don't want to short-change folks dipping their toes in the water.  There's a rich history of this life portrayed in rock & roll and imho it starts with the Velvets & never comes close to being topped.

Dead Flowers (Townes Van Zant and/or Stones) is up there too.

One of the first few posts mentioned a song "She's like Heroin."  Is that a cover of The Gun Club's "She's Like Heroin (to Me)?"  Other than that song there's really no drug references but the whole album ("Fire of Love") is soaked in opium through and through.

Sort of an inside joke, but the "Desperate Teenage LoveDolls" soundtrack was in constant rotation in the first couple years of my opiate romance.  It's a brilliant pop-soaked pre-postpunk classic (does that make sense?  as in a few years ahead of...)  and gets, along with Redd Kross who put the cheap flick & great soundtrack together, no credit ever.  "Hey, thanks for killing my Mom."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQFb4nPkZ5I (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQFb4nPkZ5I)
Crime "frustration" 1976.  Tell me again how the Sex Pistols weren't a Monkees/Archie comics rip-off of the American music bastard child punk rock...  Lyrics (a few words off):

Frustrated and ya shoot it up my way
Transfusion when you're movin' down a highway
Love the way ya scream and cheat and beat your guitar
Everybody says you've taken it too far

Well

Frustrated baby I'm gonna move on you
Frustrated honey and I know what'cha do
I see your face nearly every day
All you hippies can fade away

Double trouble for Mad Dog Colonel
Philadelphia and you do the stroll
Seen ya in your alley Mustang Sally
Take you home and they shoot you up

Well

Frustrated baby I'm gonna move on you
Frustrated honey and I know what'cha do
I see your face nearly every day
All you hippies can fade away

I second @Zoops for "Totally Wired" for the best musical and lyrical experience of an amphetamine high.
"Can't you see?  A butterfly stomach ground-ground.  I drank a jar of coffee and then I took some of these.... And I'm totally wired.  I'm totally biased.  I'm irate -- peeved.  I'm irate -- bad state, bad state, cause I'm totally wired.  And I'm always worried.  And I'm always worried. "

Spacemen 3 had some good ones for the opiate/downer experience -- "Call The Doctor" for that supra-nod/sub-OD experience, and "Feel So Good" for that, well, feeling so good experience, come to mind.

Jesus and Mary Chain have the reputation as an heroin band, while to me they had a lot of very "uppers" type music (and I know the band members went through a lot more amphetamine and alcohol in their heyday than anything else).  But I'd say "Taste Of Cindy" is one of the great modern songs to accompany a coke binge, and "Some Candy Talking" likewise for opiates...even "Head On" (covered soon after by the Pixies) captures the experience: taking yourself to the dirty part of town where all your problems can/can't be found, after which the world could die in pain and you wouldn't feel any shame...

Layne is who inspired me to sing. Id check into jar of flies since it wasnt mentioned, rotten apple and dont follow being particularly great. Sunshine is great. But im kind of a fiend for women as well. I cant believe theres no black sabbath mentions. I particularly love sweet leaf, though its about weed, i kind of imagine a long lost girlfriend as well. Supernaut man, were gonna reach up, and touch the sky. Pretty sure hotel california is about heroin, good song gotta admit. Also idk how yall feel about metallica, but poor twisted me is a good song, fairly simplistic lyrically, but it gets me when he says good to see my friends, as though ive been strung out for some time, and maybe am feeling alienated, because most of my closest friends arent dope users by any means, its really a joke among us what a greasy addict i am

Due to some bad circumstances, a month or so ago we had to undergo 4.5 days of sickness. Fullblown, no sleep, puking bile, shitting water, sweating, shivering sickness. And this was the song that kept popping into my head:
Leftover Crack-Heroin or Suicide

Hey see you know what I, I know what I dont
You promise you promise and I know you won't
The problems and pressures we face everyday
Are sometimes more like but always on display
It breaks in your ears it aches in your bones and brings you to tears
With various incisions you load another bullet
Your shootin' with precision

I'm talented with atrophy yea i do it well
you know I'd like to take a break from suffering in hell
Squattin' is the excuse is I frequently abuse
Either way I hold the chain im gonna need a noose cause PAIN!!!!!!!!
Sweats on my skin, sick with bad memories and burns for my sin PAIN!!!!!!!
To cough with each breath
The only solution is the sweet taste of death!

Don't mistake the demeanor
My kindness and weakness
I'll burn you with reality
While you cry to your Jesus
You're suffocating in a tomb
You're choking in an empty room
You're empty life thats ending soon
Completely spells your doom

I made a choice deep inside
heroin or suicide?
sickness praised in times of need
we waste away from hands of greed
Jesus nailed to wooded T's
cannot compete with my disease
humanity the weak condition
my soul is sick from my decision

There are a handful of bands/songs/album perfect for throwing on as your fixing up your shot. My greatest pleasure in life used to be playing Alice in Chain's "Junkhead" (the Trainspotting vid, of course) just as I was doing my first shot. Life as a "needle freak" is such a rollercoaster, it really depends on what mood you're in (which could be really, really good, or really, really bad - depending on how much dope you've got left).

You mentioned the word "hymn," so I have to make a suggestion that's likely unexpected. Pop singers that can fuckin belt it out are my guilty pleasure, so I fuckin love Sia. When I'm at my most hopeless moments: dopesick, no money, no dope, dealing with the aftermath with a binge, trying to come down off a days/weeks long speed bender, etc. etc. It doesn't specifically mention addiction, but Sia did struggle with some form of it at one point so maybe she was being vague. (Maybe I'm just a junkie who relates every song I hear to dope). This tune really inspires me:

Quote
Sia - Soon We'll Be Found

Come along it is the break of day
Surely now, you'll have some things to say
It's not the time for telling tales on me

So come along, it wont be long
'Til we return happy
Shut your eyes, there are no lies
In this world we call sleep
Let's desert this day of hurt
Tomorrow we'll be free

Let's not fight I'm tired can't we just sleep tonight
Don't turn away it's just there's nothing left here to say
Turn around I know we're lost but soon we'll be found

Well it's been rough but we'll be just fine
Work it out yeah we'll survive
You mustn't let a few bad times dictate

So come along, it wont be long
'Til we return happy
Shut your eyes, there are no lies
In this world we call sleep
Let's desert this day of work
Tomorrow we'll be free

Let's not fight I'm tired can't we just sleep tonight
Don't turn away it's just there's nothing left here to say
Turn around I know we're lost but soon we'll be found

- Elliott Smith -  Distorted Reality's Now a Necessity to Be Free
"I'm floating in a black balloon / OD on Easter afternoon / Distorted reality's now a necessity to be free..."
                       Waltz #2
                       Alphabet Town
"I know what you are, I just don't mind..."
                       Needle in the Hay (duh)

Between the Bars
Drink up, baby, stay up all night
With the things you could do, you won't but you might
The potential you'll be that you'll never see
The promises you'll only make

Drink up with me now and forget all about
The pressure of days, do what I say
And I'll make you okay and drive them away
The images stuck in your head

People you've been before that you
Don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still

Drink up, baby, look at the stars
I'll kiss you again, between the bars
Where I'm seeing you there, with your hands in the air
Waiting to finally be caught

Drink up one more time and I'll make you mine
Keep you apart, deep in my heart
separate from the rest, where I like you the best
And keep the things you forgot

People you've been before that you
Don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still

... and anything else of his. Just be sure to keep in mind as you listen to his heartbreakingly downtrodden voice that he wanted to die so badly that he stabbed himself in the heart with a fucking STEAK KNIFE. Like Nirvana and AIC, his music is depressing in the context of his death. SUPER depressing.

- Alice in Chains - anything, particularly Unplugged

- Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual (full album)

- Sublime - just about anything (one of the VERY few bands with a singer who OD'ed tragically young - and like, a week after getting married, at that - that is actually cheerful rather than suicide-inducing).

- Acid Bath - Paegan Terrorism Tactics (full album)

Skinny Puppy--Addiction
Skinny Puppy--Spasmolyitic (watch the video and it all makes sense)
And many other songs by SP, pre 1995...before their keyboardist Dwayne Goettel (aka aDuck...may he RiP) died of a Heroin OD. Nivek Ogre, cEvin Key and Dwayne all had their run with Heroin...supposedly thanks to Al Jorgensen of Ministry introducing it to them in the mid 80's...as the story goes.

I can't be the only Skinny Puppy fan around...right?

I feel like dying- Lil Wayne
Spyder by Imperial Drag
Heroin, perfect day, waltzing matilda - all 3 by Lou Reed
La la land- Green Velvet
Learn from this mistake- Down
Scarlet Begonias- Grateful Dead
Pool shark - Sublime

Acid bath in general, not just Hymns of a needle freak, reminds me of dope. Also a lot of Alice in Chains but unlike some of these songs/bands, I appreciated them before ever using. Bad Melon remind me of dope too, their sadder or slower songs anyway.

How has no one mentioned Wolfsheim's "Heroin, she said"?!

Also Acid Bath's (my favorite band) "Dope Fiend".

speaking of the new york dolls in the bo diddley post above, i think nobody has mentioned johnny thunder & the heartbreakers, so many songs about heroin, 'too much junkie business' sung to the tune of too much monkey business being one:

Well you run down to the corner baby, see what you can cop
You buy some for your sister and you take yours off the top
Run into the bathroom, fixing up a shot
Tie it up, shoot it up, bang your head and throw it up

Too much junkie business
Too much junkie business
Too much junkie business
I don't wanna fuck around with you

Your life becomes as sickening as that mess you call your face
The pig you call your girlfriend is dead from shooting mace
Climbing up the walls, you're shooting old moth balls
Wrap it up, call it art, now your record makes the chart

Too much junkie business
Too much junkie business
Too much junkie business
I don't wanna fuck around with you

Too much junk, too much junk
Too much junk, too much junk
Too much junk, too much junk
I don't wanna see her hanging out with you

Well you're the coolest thing in town, with your face right on the ground
Friends went through your pockets as the coffin went down
You overdosed at last, spike stuck in your head
Now you're dead! dead! dead! dead!

Too much junkie business
Too much junkie business
Too much junkie business
I don't wanna fuck around with you

Too much junk, too much junk
Too much junk, in your head

^^^Holy shit Moe you're right. I love me some Johnny Thunders. My favorite is "Chinese Rocks". It cracks me up cuz it's about being dopesick, being a slave to this shit and going out to cop. I highly recommend it. Thanks for reminding me. :)
