CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A former Erlanger employee is accused of stealing drugs from the hospital.

According to the arrest report, Beth Cagle admitted to stealing drugs from November through February.

The affadavit says Cagle did not know the exact amount she stole... but told police "it was a lot".

The report says Human Resource Director Jan Gentry reported to police that a minimum of 492 vials of Demerol were missing, and "found to all be based off one employee security code being used to gain access to these pixis machines."

Gentry reported that other drugs missing included OxyContin, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone and dilaudid.

Police say the amount of missing drugs still has to be counted.

The affidavit says Cagle was confronted about the situation by her supervisor, at which point she admitted to the theft. The report says "Mrs. Cagle admitted to having a problem and was aware she would get caught once she began taking large quantities at a time." The report says she also admitted to her supervisor that she didn't know exactly how much drugs she had stolen, but that it was "a lot."

The report says Cagle admitted to taking the drugs from the pixis machines on her days off. She also admitted to still having some of the narcotics at her home, which she agreed to return. But later, the report says, Cagle told investigators that she had destroyed all of the narcotics.

A spokesperson for Erlanger says "We are grateful for the various safeguards and surveillance measures we have in place to prevent drug theft, and particularly to our employees who have been responsible for the apprehension of this individual. Erlanger recently transitioned to one of the industry's most advanced tracking systems which played a role in apprehending this individual. This new system will provide an even more secure methodology of tracking drug diversion in the future."

The report says Cagle told her supervisors in her exit interview that she was going to try to get clean.

Cagle faces several charges including theft, drug possession, tampering with evidence, and burglary.

Her bond was set at $43,000.

So much bs.  492 vials of demerol, and only $43000 bail.  If it wasn't a nurse it would be so much more.  Also, who steals from a pixis machine using their code?  Even on their day off it is beyond stupid.
