Title: Powerball Up to $0.9 Billion: Will You Be Playing?
Post by: Morfy on January 10, 2016, 08:54:57 PM

Hey all,

Normally, I don't care about playing the lottery, usually.  Once or twice a year when the jackpot gets crazy high, like, above $250 Million, I might lay down a few $$.

I have a decent grasp of mathematics, on one hand, on the other, you WILL NOT WIN if you don't play.

So I just upped my odds of winning to: A Quarter-Billion to FIVE (I bought 5 tickets, or $10 worth).

Are you ignoring common sense too and playing?  If so, how much are you dropping down?

I just went up town to buy five tickets too. I think the jackpot is 900M, if you choose the lump sum it goes down to like 585M, then after taxes you'd get like 414 M. That what a recent news article I read online said.

I played on Wednesday night too, five tickets. And then the day after Christmas, five tickets. So I'm in for $30 this cycle.

I don't normally buy lottery tickets of any kind. But when the Powerball gets in the hundreds of millions, I usually buy a few tickets. Sure, I probably won't win, but I can dream.

I Dont normally play but, if I were going to, I would spend more money on the small pots. The chances of winning are just outrageous.

I'm the same as you guys, I barley play except for when the money is up there, or I catch a lottery pool on time. I do buy scratch offs if I'm waiting for the bus and I have time to bullshit with the homies at the bodega.

I got to hear all of their "if i won the powerball..." stories before and one guy cracked me up, said he was going to buy uber ...lmfao whaaa? Hey whatever floats your boat.

All day that's been what the office and patients were talking about, and actually the most common thing I heard was "take care of my family and give to charity "... Gave me faith in our species :)

A word of advice from a former "professional" gambler:

If you are going to buy lottery tickets, avoid the games with huge "progressive" jackpots that EVERYONE is playing in favor of the games that offer life-changing , but not insane jackpots. The difference in chage of lifestyle between 10 million and 100 million probably insn't that much and you are more likely to win the whole prize of the average large lottery than an outsized, attention-grabbing lottery.

Here is the reasoning: The larger the jackpot, the more tickets are sold and the less chance you will have of winning it all, meaning, the higher chances become that IF you win you will have to split the jackpot with many other winners moreso than the playing for the "average" jackpot.

That being said, lotteries are some of the WORST ways to gamble given the long odds but a couple of doallars to make that big win possible is not a bad entertainment value.

Another lottery tip: when choosing numbers you will be less likely to have to share a jackpot if you shift the balnance of your number choices to numbers ABOVE 31 and especially above 12. This is because most people who have favorite numbers include a birthdate or birth dates in their choice and all numbers you can choose hae the same odds of being picked. The idea is to increase the value of your ticket should you win without increasing the risk you have taken.

EDIT: After I wrote this I stumbled on this article that offers more tips about picking numbers to be less likely to win only a split jackpot. Because it went unclaimed last night and will re-draw for $1.3B Wednesday I've decided to add it:

Yes, I got 5 for myself. I let friends in Netherlands and Vietnam choose their own numbers. I will do it again Wednesday.
For the friends in Vietnam it is a "Y-U-G-E" amount. I told them it is just fun to dream.

I'll buy a few more when I go out tomorrow or Tuesday to run errands. It's up to 1.3 Billion now. 806M cash value I think. Probably in the 600M range after taxes.

I agree the best part of this is the entertainment value. I personally prefer to buy the tickets a day or two in advance of the drawing. More time to dream. If it weren't snowing right now I'd go in town to buy them tonight.

I wouldn't do anything crazy if I won. Pay off my student loans and other debts, give my mother and sisters either a small lump sum or trusts, build a house in a really nice part of town designed to my liking, furnish and decorate it to my liking, buy some autos, buy some clothes and other things, have some minor cosmetic surgery, travel whenever I wanted, and possibly go back to school just for fun (not really to earn another degree).

That's about it. Oh, and set up some type of financial situation whereby I could live quite comfortably off the interest, while the principal was securely invested and working for me.

Dreams.

WOw, so it up to $1.3B--prolly closer to $1.5B by Wednesday.

Totally agree with your POV Dead-C, but for me to haul my ass to a casino is a pain.  going to the Quick-E-Mart and dropping a few beans, is simpler.

I really wish even the Powerball wouldn't have such large, insane jackpots, but maybe mutiple winners of $5M each, or something like that.

Cheers, and good luck to all my FRIENDS who win on Wednesday!!

Ya know I was surprised to read about how the odds of hitting the jackpot are always the same and only the chances of being the sole winner change with the number of tickets bought. It does make sense though as the number of possible number combinations stays the same. It's odds are about 292 million to one.

Hate to say it but I'd probably end up dead with that kinda cash.

So I don't play...It is fun to think about tho. Kat

While in general I agree with DeadCat, I also go by the old rule, "Ya gotta be in it to win it."
With that in mind, I occasionally pick up a ticket or two.
It doesn't have to be a big prize. I just have to be desperate for bucks and have a buck that won't make a difference anyway.
I'll be in with one ticket.

I can't see spending more at this point: if I'm lucky, I'm lucky.

Quick Picks seem to win most of the time.

Could you imagine being able, overnight, to spend as much money as Trump on the upcoming election?
(How did you blow the biggest lottery jackpot in history?)

I think it would be a lot of work to disburse that much money without doing a lot of damage.
But someone's gonna have to do it...

Yeah, I got one ticket. $2 ain't much, but you definitely CANNOT win if you don't buy a ticket! I think that's what gets most people in on it. I still definitely won't win, but I have a ticket.

I'm getting my 2 tickets tomorrow. I don't think I'll get five more.

@Dhedmo:

Can you imagine if that Powerball winner was a much more likable person, used all that money to run, and actually beat Trump? He'd be insanely furious. LOL

They should split the lottery up into multiple smaller draws when it gets this big.  I would play for 10 chances to win 200million in a second.  If nobody wins one of those then they can roll the missed numbers into the winning number.

Another interesting one:  You could purchase every number in the powerball with around 584 million bucks and guarantee a win. It looks like you would still come ahead in this one as long as nobody else won.

Welp,

I think its up to $1.5B now, prolly hit 1.6 or 1.7 before the draw tomorry.

Agreeing with Z etc....,

I think the Lotto People would get much more CONSISTENT players, if instead of very few ppl winning an obscenely large amount, if many people won a life-changing amount.

Maybe each week there would be 20 (twenty) winners, who would get a cool $5M (after taxes), or maybe even 40 (forty) winners of $2M after taxes.

If there was such a system, I would be willing to plop-down $2--$5 to play that game every week.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

** Anyhoo, so the lump sum now would be close to $1B, after taxes.

If you took just one-tenth of that, say $100M as your principle, and placed that in a typical bank savings account, at 1% interest compounded monthly, it would earn $1M every month.

Most would just let THAT ride and accrue, and after a year, you'd have:
$112682503

BUT, if you left the principle as it is, and had the monthly interest sent to another account (say your checking account, or account where your debit card draws from), you'd have a cool $1M each month just to fuck around with.

Plus, it would be a low-risk investment that would provide you with everything you could need.  No stock market volatility, high-risk/high-reward shit.  Just a good, stable income.

This is just something to play around with for the rest of your life, remember that the other $900M you can do some really cool shit with, like place it all on 27-Red at the Roulette Table in Vegas.

Its fun to fantasize about, isn't it?

The thought of living in Europe or other exotic locations around the world is enticing as well.  Of course, you would be the BIGGEST FUCKING TARGET for every half-bit, criminal/ kidnapper in the world.

I think even without kilograms of coke and meth to addle one's brain, the paranoia factor would be sky-high; and not much one could do to minimize the actual risk.
