Title: What is your ancestry?
Post by: Illadelph215 on March 19, 2016, 12:42:39 AM
I'm always surprised when I find out someone knows nothing about their family's past. I feel bad when their family life was a drag and that's the reason but some people just don't care. I'm mostly Irish and have family who came during the potatoe famine, most coming to Philly. My grandfather who is 100%, his grandpa was a Molly Maguire, who if you don't know worked in the coal mines in Pa and revolted helping to create unions. Some were killed and some ran away in hiding, which he did. His name was Bull Cassidy. I am also German and French but know less about their history since it's a small % and those family members have died. Interested in your family's history, stories are always neat if any were past down.

my past is...in no order...because it's what I want, amoeba, Hominidae, Chordate of some cool fish thing, white, Maltese, Irish, Scottish, English, probably some other white countries, I should do the genetic test thing...probably a lot of humanoids who were dicks... I'm cool stopping here.

You can get a good genetic makeup test done for about $150 (I think) Ancestry.com. I had mine done using a cheek swab.

The results were  different than what I had expected and interesting. I found I am much more a a "mutt" than my parents or grandparents would have believed. After watching shows like "Vikings" I can pretty easily see how anybody with ancestry from Europe has some blood from the entire Eurasian land mass in them. What surprised me (and pleased me most) was to find out I am about 10% Native American.

Do some comparison shopping on the DNA testing...you can find a much cheaper one...don't fall for the national geographic one...no need to pay that much...there are a ton out there...and some supply different info...my mom did the 23andMe and received a ton of info (all online) ...she been bugging me to do it too...@Illadelph215 another fellow Irish ;)

I used ancestry.com as well. It's funny how many people have Irish blood since it's just a wee little island and all. It's obviously mostly the east coast since that's where most of the immigrants migrated during the famines and all but there's still big pockets all around. @DeadCat, I'm jealous of your Native American ancestry, they were always my favorite topic in history and I have much respect for them. Do you know which tribe by chance?

@DeadCat:

Ancestry DNA is now on sale for $99. That's lower than the usual price last I checked. It was in the $200s. Maybe even $299. I don't exactly remember, but I know it was in the $200s.

Now that's not to say it was more expensive in the past. Also, maybe the one I'm referencing is a very basic model, with upgrades costing more.

http://dna.ancestry.com

@Illadelph215:

I'm afraid I'm one of those people who don't know much about their family history. I know, it's shocking, as I'm a history aficionado. One would think I'd know. I do want to, but that takes time, and I'm currently amotivational.

The only thing I do know is about my grandparents, more so my maternal grandmother. My maternal grandfather died before I could really remember him.

And my paternal grandmother died when I was seven at 91 years old. I vaguely remember going to her funeral, and I technically met her when I was a baby, but that's it. My paternal grandfather is even worse. He died in 1957, so I obviously didn't meet him. She was born in 1896, and he was born in 1890.

Before you scoff, consider the fact that my father was the youngest in his family, born when she was in her late thirties. Also that I was born to an older mother and father too.

The only other tidbit I know is that my earliest ancestor was my great, great, great, however many greats grandfather, who came to the Colony of Virginia in 1635 from Yorkshire, England, and leaving from London. He came on a ship called George. They have passenger lists for early colonial crossings.

I know that because I found a genealogical website where another person with my surname did their own genealogy. They listed that fact. I also went to the passenger list. We have the same common ancestors, up until a point.

I am only guessing, but being in the north of England, some of my ancestors also could have been from Lowland Scotland. I say lowland and not highland because I doubt people from there would travel to the north of England, whereas lowland Scottish people might

Also most people in the past didn't travel far from home. But it's at least possible. I don't claim it because I don't know for sure.

Other than that, that's all I've got.

..............................

I highly suggest people look at Family Search. It's completely free. No upgrades either. Free as in free. It's put up by the Mormons, because they believe they should be record keepers. It's better to use that than pay for Ancestry if you've not gotten it.

I don't know the  tribe. Because we had my mom's done and she had none I know it came from my dad's side and he was born in Medellin, Colombia but his mother was a blonde from Brazil so who knows? I'm guessing it is a South American tribe but it is generally believed THEY migrated down from North America and Asia before that, but I showed 0% Asian.

It also showed Bristish Isles, Scandinavia, Western Europe, Caucuses, little bits from all around the Mediteanean. They provided a map with the areas that contibuted to my DNA profile and I can SEE history, the different confilcts and migrations that we read about all lead to "races" mixing.

It even showed a tiny bit from West Africa, which I'd imagine were captured as slaves.

I know it isn't that interesting to hear about someone else's DNA I only mentioning it because it is SO interesting to see your own and wonder how and when these groups mixed that I'd recommend it to anyone. It really reminds you that much of what we assume about our ancestry is based on just what we know from the last couple generations and what they tell us.

@Narkotikon no scoffing here, I had very little info from my moms side because her parents died young and she never really asked questions. I had to find out myself and it was hard and vague. That is awesome you have relatives from a colony on Va in the 1600's. I didn't have family here until the 1800's. I have no British blood either which was surprising. Also thanks for the website as I never heard of it.      @DeadCat I find it VERY interesting. You have quite the family history and being able to see a map, migrations and conflicts would be awesome. I never got that far with my searches. I can't imagine the feeling I finding out such information.

Yep, very interesting, so cool.

My sister and my cousin had theirs done. I'm not giving my DNA to anyone unless there's sex or a warrant involved. Both are mutually exclusive......Or combined. Lol *knock knock, "I have a sex warrant for a Mr. Pervy Jones "

But I digress...I'm mainly Irish and Dutch/German with a mix Scandinavian blood in there.

It is 1-3%. But it is the right 1-3%. (Not to imply there is a "wrong" % )

People have always commented on my looks and asked about my ancestry but nobody has ever asked if I have Black ancestry, although ultimately, we all do.

I love watching that Finding Your Roots show with Henry Louis Gates. the records he finds are absolutely incredible.
"we uncovered a bill of sale for a farm from 1530 that your ancestors bought"
and just about everyone he researches has a slave owner, a slave, and or inbreeding within that last few generations. its extremely common.

@neighbor I totally forgot about that show, I remember when it came out that Ben Affleck had family members in the slave trade and they put it all over the news of course. I never watched the show though. Speaking of slaves I just found this article yesterday on the Irish slave trade (yes that was a thing) and it was a lot worse then I thought. Check it out if you get a chance as it's not to long and an eye opener for sure. http://www.africaresource.com/rasta/sesostris-the-great-the-egyptian-hercules/the-irish-slave-trade-forgotten-white-slaves/

That reminds me of a joke from the awful Caddyshack 2:

I'm only 1/4 Italian but that's the extended family I grew up with & definitely the funnest/most compelling of the mix.  My great-grandmother (Mama Lou to us) was the largest personality you've ever met and just large in general.  My folks have a picture of her circa prohibition with a bottle of home-made wine in each hand and a seriously large cigar in her mouth, she's at least 400lbs in the picture.  She's the only great grandparent I met, she outlived all my grandparents save her daughter.  I have very vivid memories of her when I was young, then a long period living across the country, then I got to spend about two years in close contact with her while she slowly lost her memory.  I pried her endlessly for stories and found out something interesting (if true) to complete a mystery about a story I'd heard a hundred times from others.

The story known:  She came through Ellis Island from Italy at age 3 with her mother and father.  She went to elementary school briefly but was needed at their home/hotel (they rented rooms for income, not sure what to call it) and basically worked for her parents until they arranged her marriage, here in the u.s, at 13.  She had 3 children by age 17 and the guy beat her endlessly.  At 18 she took off across the country with the kids with nothing, knowing nobody anywhere, landed in Minnesota.  A year or so later a friend knocked on her door in the middle of the night saying her husband was in town looking for her.  She split immediately with the kids & this time went back to Italy where they stayed for about another year. He followed.

She returned to the states with the kids and he remained in Italy.  From that point on, on her & each of her children's birthdays, as well as Christmas, they would get a present in the mail of a gallon of olive oil (his family were olive farmers). She married another full Italian man, known to me via stories only as "Poppy" & by all accounts the polar opposite of the previous asshole, everyone loved him & he them.

What happened in Italy?  The dinner table conjecturing was that she obviously sought help from the mob.  The details of how it might have transpired were what we always wondered/talked about.  She was 3 when she left, and the family doubted she knew anything about her relatives there.

Turns out (my impression from what I could pry from her) that all she knew about Italy was the name of the town she was from.  She went to that town and straight to the town's church.  She told the priest her situation & when her husband showed up the priest "had a talk with him."  From that point on she never had to worry about it again.  I connected the dots & figured Father had the connections she didn't...   who knows, she was stealing the silverware at the the table & calling me by her son's name at that point.  I just feel lucky to have been given a piece of the story firsthand, true or not.

I'm like half Swedish, and a quarter English, the rest I'm not sure. I don't know a whole lot about my dad's side of the family, but my mom was pretty much full Swedish. Both of here sets of grandparents immigrated from Sweden in the late 1800s/early 1900s. My grandmother's family moved to Nome, Alaska where they operated a brothel, that's where she grew up. When she was a teenager, she moved to the Bay Area and met my grandfather. He ended up becoming an executive at Bechtel and they traveled a lot, so my mom grew up all over the world, India, Chile, Pakistan, Madagascar, Saudi Arabia, all over. They were friends with all kinds of interesting people in the 60's (Saudi princes, Jackie Onassis, a lot of 60's socialites). When my mom was 16, they moved back to California. My mom became a hippie and met my dad in the mid seventies. Thats really all I know about my family's history, I wish I knew more.

American

my dad's side of the family is irish as irish can be
all his grandparents were from county cork and emigrated here in the late 1800s/early 1900s

my mom's side is a bit hazy
her father's father was from ireland but nobody remembers from where
her mother's father was a nederlander (Dutch)
but her grandmothers were both irish as well

genetically i got the fluorescent skin, brow ridge and affinity for chemicals
and the freaky tallness and love of colonialism (jk) from the dutchies

really though, my name is about the only irish thing about me
aside from the freckles
I can say with (some) pride that I am an American, born in Brooklyn
that to me is FAR more meaningful than where my great-grandparents were born

i think, on a subconscious level, that our "ancestry" is a way to fall back on how to live in society
when we are young we still have to learn it ourselves
being able to look at a cultural tradition that is 1000s, rather than 100s, gives you some kind of... direction? to go in

I've really only got info on my fathers side ..
There was a DNA test done and it stated that I'm descended from
Either the Angle tribe in what is now Denmark or the Saxon tribe in what is northern Germany ..
We then ended up in eastern and middle England by the 1000s...
Places like Northamptonshire and Kent ...my direct descendents then headed to Virginia in the 1600s...my great great great great great grandfather was born in Pittsylvania county Va and after fighting in the revolutionary war headed south to Georgia ..Henry county ,Fulton county etc ..my family stayed there up until the late 60s ,my grandfather then headed to Los Angeles and after a few years there to Kansas City  Mo where he decided to stay ...

Apparently,

I am related to "Banjo-Boy" from the movie Deliverance.  His Wife/Sister was my grandma/mother; so that makes him my grandfather/Uncle, I think.

And that's about as much branching as my family tree does--all the back to Neanderthals, pretty much just a straight tree trunk.

What nationality was BB?? I don't know really, Scotch-Irish, runt-conjoined twin (surgically removed at 12 years), albino, sister-love'n, single central incisor, no adult teeth-having, polydactyly, fragile-X, Klinefelters XXY genotype, semi-inverted hermaphroditic, male-pattern baldness, hypospadia (peeing out of the BASE of the penis), knock-kneed, left-handed, banjo-savant, eyes-too-close-together, twerkin epilepsy syndrome, dichromatic color blindess, cat-eye pupil-having, pimple-wart buttocks disease, micrognathia, wonkey-ear, nunuco body hair, absent philtrum, hydrocephalic-microencephaly, tetralogy of fallot, dextrocardia, IBS, 2-left feet havin, triskaidyslexiadekaphobia (an irrational, misguided fear of the number 31), just to name a few.

I know that's not a nationality, but its the closest I got, dammit!

I love boasting about my native ancestry. This thread is awesome. Although I am actually a member of my tribe so it's not some white guy saying he's cherokee or whatever. I'm very proud of my tribe.

Born 'n bred new yorker. And that includes before europeans.

Since we live in a european style paternal style society I'll start there.

My dads side is actually the least I know about, his mothers last name was La guardia, and it's rumored she's related to that one famous mayor guy. I don't really talk to that side much, and since my father is dead I can't ask many questions. But he was born in NY and so was I, and all my siblings.

So german, italian on that side as far as I know. Immigrants from western europe.

Me mothas side I'm ramapough/another immigrant mutt. My grandfather was born in the ramapough mountains on the border of NY and NJ, where the ramapogh nation is at. Where ford build a plant and dumped toxic waste into the land. Where donald trump has been for decades trying to buy land and build a casino of his own, while depriving my people of building their own at the same time.

It's about 30 miles from NYC, but I digress.

MY moms mom is french, dutch, irish mostly. Probably german ect... Her maiden name is french.

I do apologize, kinda, for always trying to plug my tribe, but I'm really passionate about their plight. We're recognized in NJ and I think NY but not federally. My last name is Mann btw for anyone who actually reads about us. Dwaine Perry is my cousin.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramapough_Mountain_Indians

Here's a film that exaggerates a little but our tribe is in that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out_of_the_Furnace

And they recently made a documentary wince I can't remember the name of.

If you want to meet a REAL native, meet my wife. She says she has a spanish great grandfather but who knows. The rest, native. Oklahoma for ya.

Nothing fancy, just a Mc Wop (Irish and Italian) as far as I know. I look more Irish than Italian though. My uncle was able to do the Italian side of our family tree back pretty far. A lot of priests in it going pretty far back. I still have a cousin who's a priest in the Rome area. I would love to know more about the Irish side of my family though.
My husband is pretty much the same but with a touch of confirmed Native American. I'm kinda jealous. I dig the Native folks big time.

I signed the petition.

I have two questions:

1) how do you pronounce that name? Is it "Ramp-off Luna-apee," "Ramp-owf Loon-ape," "Ramp-pawg Loon-ope" or what
2) how will Federal recognition of your tribe "ensure our [your] childrens' survival?" Are they dying right now?

I am totally not trying to be a smartass. I hope this doesn't come across that way. Just thought that the description there was a bit extreme in its language.

Can we sign it without having our names posted on the sight? That is unclear.

First off I'd really like to thank both of you for showing interest in it. So seriously THANK YOU.

Zoopy zoops: I'm not really good at typing enunciation but I'll try, I say it RAM (as in dodge ram or the ungulate) uh, poh as in long "O". Like "oh". Lenape (thats how I've always spelled it, also know as the delaware injuns) is Len, ep, A. Yea I'm terrible at that.

Yea they've always been kinda doomy, but I'm taking it as by having federal status that insures my peoples land can't be touched. Also natives get federal benefits. My wife and daughter get free healthcare form their seminole tribe (albeit terrible sometimes) and other, um IDK, guilt related stuff. They can build a casino, which is a great source of revenue for the tribe if they don't squander it like my wifes tribe has.

It will help in the ongoing lawsuit again Ford, they dumped toxic waste in our traditional homeland. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is in on that one. It was declared a superfund site.

Mainly it's kinda a principle type thing. For hundreds of years we've been denied recognition because europeans really wanted to eradicate the native peoples. It really was a clear case of racism. Honestly if it wasn't for the delawares the jamestown colony would have never worked. I think just a nod in the direction of, yea, you taught us how and what to eat, would make a lot of us happy.

But if you're somewhat of a purist, there probably isn't any pure ramapo's left. We've been interbreeding with africans and europeans since the 15th century. But really in the scale of things, there are very few pure blood natives period.

Anyway sorry for the rambling.

Dead Cat: yes, there is a box underneath where you put your name that lets you hide it. And honestly I know nothing about that site and I was pretty weary myself putting my address and stuff in it, so I made one up. I'm a paranoid type of guy.

Again thank you very much.

Hey 6-mam, I signed it :)

Hope it helps. I sent that link to a few peeps that are activists  as well so it should get some more signatures thru their end as too.

Out on the island the Shinnecock are the only tribe left I believe. (I'm not sure if peconic was a tribe?) They got screwed land wise, but I believe they won the vote and have the right to build casinos. I'm not sure I have to look it up. I used to know a lot more about the goings on when worked and lived out east, so don't quote me on that.

Assholes call the shinnecocks the "monig" tribe, why? Oh "because they're mo' nigg*r than they are Indian."....

Sigh. Isn't that the worst? I feel bad even repeating it... I've heard that quote come out of the mouths of many "non racists"... And others who like to claim they're part Cherokee or something ! Yeah?! (Such a pet peeve of mine, people claiming to be Native American but you know they aren't)

People think it's funny and don't take the tribe seriously at all. They go out there to buy cigarettes from them and treat them like dirt.

Makes me insane, and mad. Jesus Christ. Look at what happened to these peoples ancestors.  Look at our ancestors did to them. What the fuck.  Honestly it brings tears to my eyes when I think of the way native Americans were systematically decimated and destroyed. All the knowledge and wisdom that could have been pasted down...just gone. :(

I'm sorry for someone in family possibly being any part of your ancestors and their peoples demise. I know, it's lame but I truly do feel so much heartache over human suffering like theirs.

That would be so cool to learn you're like 1/64 Black! Maybe just to have the, um, the UH, the erm, equipment? Do you look Black?

So tell me,

just what good is having 1/64 of the um, err, the equipment? How'd you ever pull it?

As for me, Half English, Half Beam me up Scotty

You didn't know - 1/64 = all the equipment. You have to understand genetics. Weird I know but that's how it works ( a little bird told me ).
