Halfway through Limitless on Netflix. Good show. Funny and the case-of-the-week is usually about some crazy fringe science like optogenetics/false memories, bacteria that feeds off electricity, and super smart prosthetic limbs. Actually, the show kind of reminds me of Fringe but without the deep mythology. Some of the same actors are in it too like Blair Brown (Nina Sharp) and Georgina Haig (Henrietta).

I mostly love watching documentaries, but as far as shows go I just finished the first 2 seasons of The Fall on Netflix. I'm ready for the next season now, but have no idea if/when their making it. I'm a sucker for shows like that. I've always been a big Law & Order fan and I loved Criminal Minds for years but the last couple of seasons started getting kinda cheesy. Same with OITNB. The first season was great, even the second season was pretty good, but then it started to get to be a bit much. I mean, it's based (loosely) on a book about a check who did what 10 months in prison or something? How long are they gonna stretch that shit out? I watched the first couple of episodes of Wentworth a couple years ago but sort of lost interest. Maybe I'll try to get back into that.

Trainspotting 2 is coming out in Jan. The first one was so awesome I hope the second one is good I don't see how they can fuck it up really but I have high hopes and will probably like it either way.

My thoughts on random posts in here

-The Knick is fucking awesome, from the very first to the very last scenes of Dr. Thackery
-From what I've seen (moat of 4th season) Banshee is really good
Hard to guess what's going to happen and how and when, pretty rare for me
-Daniel Tosh is the embodiment of douche bag frat boy humor (unapologetically racist/sexist as an attempt to be "edgy" but just comes off as really fucking stupid)
-Trainspotting was great, hopefully they will follow the book Porno for the sequel
-Gotta watch Reindeerspotting if you haven't seen it and love 40mgtoFreedom's avatar
-What is this show Stranger Things and why does It have the Star Wars look to its poster?

I'm currently obsessed with Animal Kingdom. Its sort of a modern day Fargo (the TV series not the movie).
Really good stuff.

Watching Stranger Things on Netflix and Preacher on AMC.
I really have enjoyed Stranger Things. Nice to see Winona Ryder acting and is doing a pretty good job so far.
Outcast on Showtime is turning out to be pretty good.

The Night Of, on HBO, is starting out really good. It's what's replacing Game of Thrones on Sunday nights. Omar, from The Wire, is in it. There's a murder in episode one but it's not really a who-done-it, more of a prison procedural.

A young Pakistani man "borrows" his dad's cab to drive to a party that, being the uncool kid, he's desperate to go to. Before he gets there though a beautiful young woman climbs into the cab and ends up derailing his plans, giving him some e and then taking him home for drinking and sex. Being the uncool kid who never parties, he feels sick and ends up passed out in the kitchen while she's in bed. In the morning, she's dead of multiple (!) stab wounds. He flees but due to an unfortunate chain of events ends up caught. Now he's being shuffled through the justice system while his parents try to deal with his troubles from the outside with no money and no experience in such things.

Having not been to prison myself I'm curious if the prison scenes are accurate.

I started watching the Bates Motel on Netflix with the better half.  Pretty good after 4 episodes.  It's a prequel to the movie sort of.

Okay then, I guess it is pretty accurate! I've never been through any of that and it gives ME anxiety to watch. It's not a true story. It's based on a BBC show, Criminal Justice.

@thetalkingasshole asked, What is this show Stranger Things and why does It have the Star Wars look to its poster?

Stranger Things is a sci-fi/horror show set in the 80s that seems to draw a lot of inspiration from Altered States, Stand by Me, Firestarter, and most definitely E.T. There's a girl with strange powers, an alternate dimension, government experiments, a group of friends who play D&D and communicate via walkie talkies and ride their bikes everywhere and anywhere, clueless 80s parents, mean 80s bullies, an incompetent local police department, the frazzled single mom, a quiet creepy loner boy with a heart of gold, and all the 80s references a nostalgic 40-something could ever ask for but presented in an organic way within a cool, creepy, jump-when-startled storyline.

"The Night of...." is shaping up to be good. HBO usually does a good job with this type of series, ones that are a little too involved for a single feature film and too grim or bloody to go on regualr tv. The "True Detective" series, especially seasone 1 is a good example.

So far the jail scenes have been moving from the local Manahatttan precinct whre he is initially taken to what they tell us is RIkers Island. I've never had the misfortunet o visit Rikers but in this series it looks more like a cross between a Medieval dungeon and a mid-20th Century prison. However in the nadful of county jails I've been inside most look completely different. Far brighter and noisier than anything I see in film and TV.

With the exception of the now replaced Dade County Jail I hardly saw any old style iron bars for walls and doors. It's all heavily painted cinder block walls, steel doors and plexi- or reinforced shatterproof glass windows and pod walls. Most are 2 tiered C-shaped pods with a common area inside the C and guards station in the middle of several pods.

It is almost like the jails we see in film and tv are romantic notions of prison as either a contemplative place or rape factories.

One of the exceptions was the recent A&E series "60 Days In" which is filmed in a real Indiana County jail with hidden cameras. If you haven't seen it, it is kind of interesting: they take about half a dozen volunteers and lock them up with in gen-pop and you see they had absolutely no idea what they were in for. The ones that went in who had "law and order" attitudes (including an actual cop) thought people in jail had it easy and all deserved worse were the first to fail, which isn't surprisingto anyone who actually been in a jail.

I watched a few episodes of 60 days in it was interesting but I didn't like it, I love lockup though. Figures it's the assholes who think jail is to easy to be the first ones to bitch out. I agree the 2 jails i have been are exactly like you described pods with grey painted cinderblock one i had my own cell and the other was open, the med. and max. security floors in the jail had cells where it was open for gen pop but everything in the little jail was your own cell which was quite nice for the first few weeks of w/d, better food too.

I finished the first 2 ep. of the night of, going to watch the 3 and 4th when it comes on today. It's still really good, and I like how accurate it is about how the cops are playing your friends who are trying to help you and the whole court process, i don't know how much more grueling you can make the booking process but i was satisfied with how they showed it. It'll be interesting to see how they do the jail and such it'd be nice to hear from someone whose been in rikers.

I loved the john turtorro quote from ep. 1 or 2 "The truth can goto hell because it doesn't help you, if you can't get that through your head right now you can forget about the rest of your life."

"The Night of..." just keeps getting better. Finished part 4 tonight and was impressed. Gonna watch this through to the end.

If you don't mind subtitles, the Norwegian disaster film, "The Wave" is a great ride. At points I forgot I was reading subtitles, always a good sign. A lot of the Netflix reviews complained about the last 45 minutes but I thought it was great all the way through.

Really enjoyed "Stranger Things". The Duffer Bros. are getting better and better. Their last series, "Wayward Pines" sort of sucked the second season but now that they are behind the wheel of "Stranger Things" they seem more confident.

"Mr. Robot" started out pretty well but I'm not sure where it's going suddenly. The main character is supposedly crazy but the writers have spent 4 or 5 shows beating that theme into the viewer's head. Alright already! We get it! The good part is they get the tech right for a change.
