Title: Storing liquid methadone
Post by: Snout on November 12, 2016, 06:06:34 AM
If one wanted to store some liquid methadone for a while, what would be the best way? It would be methadone with a small amount of water added to it at the clinic. Should it be refrigerated? Is it safe to freeze it? Anybody know what the best way to store it for multiple months is? Thanks!

Fridge or at room temperature is what I do.

I think it's quite indestructible but I could be wrong.

Avoid direct sunlight.

Ive seen studies that looked at degradation and bacterial growth.  Fridge or no fridge seems pretty equal if I remember right.  Personally I have frozen methadone for months and had no noticeable loss of potency.

I dug up the study if you want to see for yourself: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23924817

It starts tasting like shit a few days in for me. I was wondering if it was in my head.

It probably wouldn't hurt to add a little ethyl/iso alcohol, just a small small amount, like 1ml per liter. Even bacteriostatic water for injection could be mixed in. Something to discourage bacterial/fungal growth. It would really blow to have like 2 liters of done, and find it filled with mold or bacteria one day.

@Thoms Definitely not in your head.

My old pharmacy used methadose and that stuff would survive the apocalypse intact.  My current uses the old school method with weighed out methadone powder and no additives.  It goes funky tasting much faster.  I assume its the lack of preservatives.

I have even boiled and microwaved liquid Methadone and have found it indestructible.

But if you have any intention of injecting it then the added water can encourage bacterial growth so don't be a fool like I was - just drink it ! ... but if there is any chance that someone wants to shoot it then I'd recommend the fridge.

My MMT clinic used methadose as well. I always kept a couple hundred mgs in my safe in case of the zombie apocalypse or something. It lasted a long time. After a while (like months) it starts to sorta separate, but I'd just shake it up a little & it was fine. @Thoms is right though, it does taste a little funky after a while. Fridge is probably better.
