Hey all, in keeping with the "what are you listening to right now" post and the "what are you reading right now" I thought I would add a telly/movie thread too.

So what genres do you like to watch?

I find these days that 99% of drug related shows are so completely unrealistic and filled with discredited junk science that I just get annoyed and can't lose myself in the story.
IE; I tried watching Narcos and the narrator starts on about the old drug war myth of how studies showed that lab rats would ignore food and water in favour of cocaine and that is simply not true, but it was presented as fact so bugger that show.
But I am starting to watch Weeds which looks promising.

I recently finished watching season 2 of The Strain (based on Guillermo del Toro's trilogy) and it's pretty damn cool.
I also love Got, the first few seasons of The Walking Dead, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Fringe, Star Trek TNG, Babylon 5 and other well written sci-fi/fantasy/horror shows.

Clever crime shows are also a favourite such as The Fall (Gillian Anderson is amazing in it), Luther, Wire in the Blood, Happy Valley (really good too) and I want to check out The Killing as I have heard that is excellent.

Oh, and "Louie" by Louis C.K is so damn good it should be a crime- that guy is a comedic genius imho. I like comedy shows but don't know enough titles to chase up, although Arrested Development is hilarious and Veep and OitNB are also both really good.
I have heard Community and Parks and Recs are good but I haven't gotten around to downloading them yet. So any suggestions for good comedy would be appreciated.

As for movies;
Pacific Rim (well worth checking out), Alien, This is Spinal Tap, The Thing (Kurt Russel's beard deserves it's own credits), Chicago, District 9, Moon, The Blues Brothers...
Oh, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (love love love), the original Star Wars trilogy, Snatch, the Life of Brian, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Jurassic Park... and I like good animation movies like Up, Monsters Inc, The Emperor's New Groove etc because I am super mature.

I'm sure I have left out stuff because it's like being asked what's your favourite cuisine... it really depends on my mood.

And if you made it this far here is That Mitchel and Webb Look's "Heroin Xmas"... gotta love nana's attempt at buying her grandson's Xmas drugs  ;D

You are going to be so sorry you asked me...I LOVE TV!

DRUNK HISTORY is an awesome show where they interview comedians and entertainers and have them recount a historically accurate story, then the celebrity (at the very least recognizable) actors act out and lip sync the story on screen with the storyteller as the voice over.

Oh, and did I forget to mention the best part?

THE COMEDIANS ARE ALL COMPLETELY TRASHED WHILE RECOUNTING THE HISTORICAL EVENT.

Many of the episodes are "laugh out loud til you hurt" funny. Its on Comedy Central and they are in the middle of their 3rd season right now.

That's my favorite one on right now, but the others that make me happy when I see them in the DVR are:

• GOTHAM
Really, really, really good. Especially the set design and overall imagery.

• THE LEAGUE
In its last season and starting to jump the shark a tiny bit, but still enormously funny especially when the character Raffi shows up. Several funny one liners that circulate in my house were born of that show.

• ONCE UPON A TIME
It's basic premise is "what if fairy tale characters lived in present day America". Its most interesting episodes are those that give you background story on a character that helps explain why they behave the way they do (i.e. The Evil Queen had something heartbreaking happen to her and it changed her...which is just like real people, everyone has a story and a history of why they are who they are.

Older shows I love to watch on Netflix and Amazon Prime:

• STARGATE UNIVERSE
The only Stargate franchise I like. It kinda feels Star Trek-esque, and has a very loose connection to its parent series. It could have been a stand alone series with very little tweaking.

• STAR TREK
Original Series, The Next Generation, Voyager, and Enterprise

• X-FILES
Gotta get ready for the new ones coming out!

• THE TWILIGHT ZONE

• THE OUTER LIMITS

• BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA & CAPRICA
Caprica had a very slow start because they were setting up ideas and background for the fiture of the series, and I was so disappointed it got cancelled before they could make another season. The previews for the season that never got made looked incredible.

• LAW & ORDER
The older, original ones, especially with Chris Noth and Jerry Orbach. We call it "The Lennie Show" at our house 😄

Oh yes, I forgot about Battlestar Galactica, that was a great series.

You should definitely check out Fringe, it was such a novel show, kinda like the x-files meets alternate universes. Really engaging (although I found the final season to be a bit meh in comparison to the first few) I reckon it's one of the best science fiction-y series out there (you'll find torrents for it easily, although it ended maybe 10 years ago).

And if you like clever horror then The Strain is totally worth checking out... I can't wait for next season.

Shame they cancelled Hannibal though, that was some interesting telly.

Ok thanks, I'll check them out (The Fringe sounds good in particular).

If you like Battlestar, did you watch Caprica? Not many people did (and thats why it was cancelled 😝), but I enjoyed it and it was frustrating not to have people to discuss it with.

Another one that should be coming back for another season is "The 100". I thought it was going to appeal too much to the teeage demographic based on the main characters ages and the network its on (CW), but it has evolved into a fairly good show.

Right now I'm watching South Park on Comedy Central.  I'm not really watching it.  It's more or less on for background noise.  I do that a lot with the TV.  I might glance over once in a while, but more often I'm staring at the computer screen.

As for shows I liked in the past:

Seinfeld
Roseanne
Will & Grace
Friends (although don't really care for it now)
Designing Women (but not post-Suzanne)
The Golden Girls
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Stargate SG-1
Stargate Atlantis
Star Trek TNG
Star Trek Voyager (especially b/c of all the Borg stuff.  Love the Borg.)
Star Trek Enterprise
Futurama

As for movies, I like a lot of period and historical dramas.

Jane Eyre (the 2011 remake)
The Young Victoria
The Age of Innocence
Marie Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst version)
Pride and Prejudice
Emma
Northanger Abbey
Persuasion
Sense and Sensibility
The Madness of King George
Mrs. Brown
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Little Women
Downton Abbey (PBS TV show on Masterpiece Classic)

I also like:

Girl Interrupted
High Art
Kill Bill 1 and 2 (that's about it for action)
But I'm a Cheerleader
Drop Dead Gorgeous
The Witches of Eastwick
The Help
Eat, Pray, Love
Bridesmaids

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.

Since it's almost Halloween, there have been a lot of horror movies on.  I've been watching some of those.

We got to see Hitchcock's "Psycho" on the big screen last week, it was even better in the theatre.

Since you guys are TNG fans, you might get a kick out of this (or maybe not, its an inside joke that might not translate to text).  A couple of years ago, we bought a three flat building and did all the remodeling ourselves. I like to have TV on in the background (like Nark!), and TNG is one of mine and my DH's favorites and we know them practically by heart. So we know what's going in the episodes without having to see it, and just having it on offered us some comfort and distraction during the long days of construction.

There is one episode, I think it was one where Wesley was trying to talk to a girl for the first time and asking for advice, Worf says something along the lines of "I can't mate with human females, they are too fragile". Well that made us crack up and start to postulate what exactly was making sex so dangerous between a human female and Worf!?!

We decided he couldn't have sex with human females because he was packing a 38kg penis and it was his enormous Klingon cock that would hurt human females. It became even funnier when we figured out how much 38 kg converted to in pounds. Then every time we actually watched an episode with Worf we would laugh trying to figure out how he was carrying around such a ginormous package (a sling !?!). It became hilarious when Troi started dating him at the end of the series because she is half human and must have a special hoohaa to be able to mate with Worf!

Ok, now that you know how sick and weird I am....

LOL @ Worf dick.

IIRC, I think he said (in one of the episodes, not sure which) that Klingon sex is rather violent.  I remember him saying the females bite the males, etc.  I can't see your typical human female getting into that.  Unless she has a Klingon BDSM fetish.

Honestly, I can see some extreme Trekkies, the kind that dress up and go to conventions, as doing that.  Wanting to get it on with a "Klingon" for raunchy Klingon sex.  I'm sure some freaky shit goes on at those places when the lights go off.

You're correct Nark! The episode where he mates with the half Klingon half human ambassador (who shows up a couple seasons later with his son Alexander), there is mention of rough, kinda violent sex. I think they also mention Klingon women being quite sexually aggressive in the episode that Riker does the officer exchange program on a Klingon ship.

I like being bitten and giving love bites (and I'm sure a lot of other human females do too) just not to the point of drawing blood!

LOL, I never thought about extreme Trekkie convention after hours activities, but I bet you hit the nail on the head....or the Klingon 38kg penis nailed someone, or got head, or something...

Mr. Robot

I've heard so many great things about that show, have to find it somewhere online to watch it.

@Pullmyhair., I noticed a couple Adult Swim shows on your list. Are you a Robot Chicken and/or Mike Tyson's Mysteries fan also? I forgot to add them to my list.

I like a lot of the female comedians on Comedy Central.  Not so much the male.  They're always so juvenile and frat-guyish.  Shit like Workaholics.  Just stupid IMO.  And I loathe Daniel Tosh.  So not funny to me.

I also like Another Period a lot.  It's absurdly funny.

I just started watching The Knick and it is great. Someone here made a thread about it so I decided to check it out and I watched the first season in a day. I just started the new seasons of gotham and the walking dead. If you have cable you can usually use their site on the internet to watch all the episodes that is what I do using my mom's cable and netflix accounts. I also watched all of prison break which was good the only things I didn't like was there was a cliffhanger scene every 10 minutes and if they would of just killed a few people they wouldn't of been in half of the shit they went through.
