David Bowie And The Story Of Ziggy Stardust (BBC Documentary)

Source:

Published on 1 Apr 2013

David Bowie and the story of Ziggy Stardust
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is arguably the most
important album in the mind-blowing career of David Bowie. Released in 1972, it's
the record that set the mercurial musician on course to becoming one of the best-
known pop stars on the planet. In just over a year, Bowie's messianic Martian
invaded the minds of the nation's youth with a killer combination of extraterrestrial
rock 'n' roll and outrageous sexuality, all delivered in high-heeled boots, multi-
coloured dresses and extravagant make-up. In Bowie's own words, Ziggy was 'a
cross between Nijinsky and Woolworths', but this unlikely culture clash worked -
Ziggy turned Bowie into stardust. This documentary tells the story of how Bowie
arrived at one of the most iconic creations in the history of pop music. The songs,
the hairstyles, the fashion and the theatrical stage presentation that merged
together to turn David Bowie into the biggest craze since the Beatles. Ziggy's
instant success gave the impression that he was the perfectly-planned pop star.
But, as the film reveals, it had been a momentous struggle for David Bowie to hit
on just the right formula that would take him to the top. Narrated by fan Jarvis
Cocker, it reveals Bowie's mission to the stars through the musicians and
colleagues who helped him in his unwavering quest for fame - a musical voyage
that led Bowie to doubt his true identity, eventually forcing the sudden demise of
his alien alter ego, Ziggy.

And his original video for space oddity ...

I had a track from Ziggy Stardust going through my head all night last night - "It Ain't Easy," and I wake up to THIS!

Sucks hard. He was fuckin great. Changed his name from David Jones so he wouldn't be confused with the guy from the Monkees.

Rest in Peace, sweet prince.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.
Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant

This is such a bummer.
I went on a bit of a Bowie kick when Nikita linked We the Children of Bahnhof Zoo
And I thought a lot about him when Lou Reed died.
He'd just released "Lazarus," and it sounded great (KCRW, the public radio serving SoCal, doesn't always play music, but they play new stuff, from Borns to  Bowie, Quantic to Kendrick). I was curious about his involvement with Edna Walsh on the play of the same name. Supposedly, it was to be a sort of follow-up to The Man Who Fell to Earth.

The song has some lyrics that struck me as peculiar, but I guess I get it now. The Telegraph reports, "It now appears the singer and those closest to him arranged its release at the end of his life, after 18 months of living with [liver, according to a Dutch website] cancer."

David Bowie's last studio album, Blackstar, was released three days ago. Here's "Lazarus" (with nearly four million hits as I write this)

Lazarus

Look up here, I'm in heaven
I've got scars that can't be seen
I've got drama, can't be stolen
Everybody knows me now

Look up here, man, I'm in danger
I've got nothing left to lose
I'm so high it makes my brain whirl
Dropped my cell phone down below

Ain't that just like me

By the time I got to New York
I was living like a king
Then I used up all my money
I was looking for your ass

This way or no way
You know, I’ll be free

Just like that bluebird
Now ain’t that just like me

 Oh I’ll be free
 Just like that bluebird

Oh I’ll be free
 Ain’t that just like me

More than anything I'm just speechless at this. I don't think it's really set in yet during this kinda crazy day.

Fuck.

Bowie spanned much more than a Genre, it's not that common for a contemporary artist to be popular across so many cultures.

Both Music and Art just lost an amazing soul..

Man fuck cancer. 18 fucking months.

That could be many of us.. I wonder if he had HCV?

He had such an incredibly huge body of work.  Like chops said, he spanned genres and never shied away from trying out something new.  Such a loss for the world as a whole.

He used cut up technique for some of his inspirations like burroughs did:

I also have a huge crush on his wife Iman.  Such a great model of confident femininity, and a realistic view on beauty.  It's hard to believe how old she is at all.

I heard a report that he had liver cancer. Also, saw a photo of him from last Friday, and he looked dapper and spry. If I can find the link will post. My wife was in an elevator with him less than 6 months ago and said he looked well.

I wonder if he had HCV? (which increases the chances of hepatocellular carcinoma). If so, the photo I saw didn't look like anyone I've ever seen in liver failure. Sorry he's gone. He was my archetype of cool.

I once read where Bowie said Mick Jagger is a good kisser, lol.

Saw him in Detroit once, Iggy Pop opened for him, Iggy Pop was so fucked up, he was spitting, eewwe....he was so bad, the crowd was pitching cups of beer and all kinda crap at him!
