Title: Still sneezing after quitting opiates
Post by: Chip on January 20, 2017, 02:06:24 AM
Apart from two small doses (no more, just seeing how i would react, true  ;)) since stopping Methadone 2 months ago, I am still sneezing heaps.

I found this link for any opiate withdrawal related chronic sneezers out there:

https://www.drugs.com/forum/need-talk/chronic-sneezing-after-opiate-withdrawal-57638-2.html

an excerpt:

Quote
It's 89 days today and I still sneeze five or six times a day and 7-8 sneezes each time.

Interesting.  When I've come off methadone in the past, I sneezed a lot for a week or two and then it pretty much went away.

Be grateful you don't sneeze as often as this girl!

P.S. - Sneeze is quite a weird word.

Id have bouts of like 5 sneezes in a row for about 3 to 4 weeks after quitting dope this most recent time.  It did eventually go away at about a month sober so mdone just probably takes a lil longer since its half life is so long.

Theyll go away man

Yeah totally normal chipper i sneezed, had runny nose and watery eyes for the 4 months until I got on, after a month i would stop sneezing 5-7x in a row but I'd still sneeze more then is normal. It's weird not sneezing, or yawning except when in w/d when your clean you do it constantly.

Hey, YOU DID IT!!! :o :)

I must have missed this great stunt. This is really something else.
Oh man, I'm just jealous.
How did it go? I've been out of the board for awhile (or just mentally miles away from, not decently focused on what's on), anyway, last "freeze-frame" I have shows that you are on relatively tiny doses (like about 15-10, or maybe even 5mgs, right?) and that's it. And now, BANG, chipper is clean!
I realize that no matter how low your prior dose is, it's never going "just like that" and you needed to "pay your debts" one way or another.
I also remind you preparing your "crossover" very thoroughfuly and meticulously.

Sneezing or not-you're my Hero.
I believe that your "sobriety" is well established, so to say, and I'm positive you will be able to hang in there, since you're a mature one guy and a really good person.

Sorry this hackneyed, used one cliche is all I have to you.
My congratulations.

Withdrawal sneezing is such a weird symptom. I wonder why that happens, like what causes it?
When I'm in acute withdrawal I get sneeze gags. I'll sneeze super hard a few times in a row and then it manes me gag and throw up. It's terrible. It happened a couple times when I was driving which was super fun, really.  Ugh.

Did the sneezes ever stop finally??

Hah @Raine I did that once I did coke the night before and just kept sneezing until I threw up, it hurt. I think the sneezing has to do with the way opiates effect our respiratory system, it suppresses our coughing so probably in the same light it suppresses our sneezing or makes us more immune to the effects of allergens in our nasal cavity. Either way I don't get half the symptoms, the shitting, pain, lethargy, depression make sense but the eyes watering and yawning don't to me.

Oh man, I bet that was uncomfortable.  It's totally uncontrollable and the timing is never ideal either, of course. Heh.

I sneeze like crazy for months following cessation of opiates.  It doesn't begin to subside until 3+ months have passed.

Teary eyes and out-of-control yawning usually come with all the sneezing.  For me, the yawning is even more irritating than sneezing.

WOW that stuff lingers for you guys? The one time I can think of that I was clean for any length of time, I had some symptoms that lasted weeks and even months, but thankfully sneezing and yawning wasn't one of them.

I remember being slightly sensitive to sneezing for a bit, but mostly that and yawning went back to normal afte4 a couple weeks mostly. Sneezing I could handle I suppose but I HATE the yawning of withdrawal, it gets so bad it's basically back to back yawning, constantly. and then sometimes when I yawn and stretch I come close to fainting, I get tunnel vision and my whole body goes numb, sort of like when you get up too fast and it's really severe. I actually like it when that happens while sick because for a couple seconds my body goes numb instead of hurting, sometimes it actually feels a lot like a hit of nitrous as crazy as that sounds.

I remember when I was clean for those five months or so, my yawning went back to normal, that is to say it yawn when I got tired, especially if sitting in the same place for a while... But I still hated it, because after having a habit for so long the only times I yawn is when I'm sick, opiates suppress the yawn reflex at least for me. So I just subconsciously associate it with misery basically.

I really feel for you, I would hate to have those go on for a long time. During the really bad or extended kicks, I always get the slightest fear in the back of my mind that the withdrawal will go on forever; that I've just broken my brain from keeping my opioid receptors lit up for so long, and I'll just live like that forever. Thankfully that's never the case, and I know its an illogical fear but its there sometimes nonetheless.

There must be something wrong with me cuz I literally hardly ever sneeze. Like I can count on one hand how many times I sneeze a year. Maybe the fact that I've been addicted to opies for almost 12 years straight has something to do with it, haha.
But when I do sneeze it's like a full-body convulsion and rapid-fire. I probably look really weird.

still sneezing. I'm thinking that it's related to the Phenibut and Dopamine changes that tickle my ever weakened endorphin regulatory system.

I dunno. just a guess.

oh yeah, I heard that a lady broke her neck twice from violent sneezing. *groan*

I think it's an ocular nerve thing -- bright light seems to set them off for me. Like if I get hit really hard, covering up my eyes and blacking out any light usually stops it. I hate that shit tho, I get them so bad I'll be like drooling and spraying snot all over the place, unable to get a freakin' word out until they stop. Shit isn't anywhere near "normal" sneezing.

RE: breaking your own neck, I know OT but I was reminiscing about this the other day: I knew this cat in an SLE I lived at in San Mateo, CA; who busted his own neck while tweaking on speed. He'd shoot the shit and his head would start bobbing and twitching, and he couldn't control it. The better the tweak, the more his head would start bouncing around. He said the other tweakers would always let him get off first, so they could watch him and gauge how good the speed was; until one day his neck just fucking snapped! Believe that shit?!?! I SWEAR it's true. He was mostly paralyzed on one side of his body, fucked for life cos of that shit. Busted his own neck over a speed tic. Unreal eh?

My bad for reposting my details all over, it just seems necessary for certain subject matter.
Anyway, at 10 weeks sober, and never sneezing while hooked, I have at least 6 sets of 3 sneezes a day now. And the yawning is a son of a bitch, which may be from boredom). I'm familiar with the symptoms from previous sprees of sobriety, but I can't quite tell if my sneezes are from my new environment where this place is over grown due to not having a previous winter, or if it's from my sobriety.... I imagine the pollen doesn't help, even though I've never had allergies in 27 years. I think I read somewhere that we develop and lose immunities to such things as pollen allergies every 7 years or something. So like a new set of allergy bull shit to deal with every 7 years.

Congrats on kicking the methadone habit you had @chipper, glad I got some good news stopping by here for the first time in awhile.

The sneezing headline caught my attention as I finally quit subs a little over two weeks ago after tapering down for a long time and besides the whole not sleeping great thing, the sneezing fits are the most annoying part of this so I can relate...

Thanks !  the best thing it did for me was to get a job and hold onto it without having to rush off to the clinic every few days.

I always like to add that it hasn't made me any happier as I have little contact with my former friends so it's a lonely but predictable existence.

*ahchoo*

Maybe it hasn't made you any happier yet becuz you've yet to meet a special someone be it a friend, companion, girlfriend, fwb...who knows. But you don't have a crutch now and are free to wonder and mingle without fear of withdrawal and what not.

Maybe just maybe if you keep working and "being normal" you will be forcefully introduced to a special someone and you will end up happier...yeh never know my friend.

What kind of field did you find work in if you don't mind me asking?.....let me guess....computer programmer for a kickass local business! :)

I have very close companionship and some mates but I miss the using crowd.

I work as a Linux Level 2 Support guy for a global company supporting their entire network of servers.

I'm not working for the money but for my own sense of pride and in some way it's been good to professionally connect with some straight people.

I guess I have to give it more time.

I appreciate your input ... adjusting to the real world without my props is a bugger.

Keep up the good work. I know it's not reassuring, but for me, the longest period of time i was clean after having a habit was 1.5 years, that was about 6 years ago. And during the time i kept on thinking i would stop being cold and drenched in sweat. But, it never stopped. It went down a bit and plateaued out. It was bad enough that that was the first thing i thought when i relapsed-fuck yeah, im not sweating! I feel almost traumatized about having that going on for over a year.

So, if sneezing is your thing like sweating was for me, then it'll probably not go away soon. Especially after a long time on opiates, supposedly it matters how long you've been on not how much you took as far as how much withdrawal symptoms you get. Just compared to yourself, at other times.

over a year later i am still sneezing.

i know it's from my decades of opiate use because i get goosebumps after a sneeze -- opiate naive people don't get that.

my body temperature regulation is fucked up and i have chronic insomnia thst might br from Gabapentinoids restricted use (mild withdrawals) and/or Olanzapine detox - i taperef off it and it took months.

i am surprised that i am still suffering from opiod cessation though.
