Chipper,
I went through similar with my own dad at the end of his life and I think
it is best to just continue to advocate on his behalf for pain meds.
Good that they gave him morphine and I would consider asking for it around the clock to keep him comfortable.
They can give it orally or through an IV and it may be a better option than Oxyc/Naltrexone option.
I am not sure how they do end of life care where you are.

The swelling at the site of the new pacemaker is most likely normal and they should be monitoring it quite often.
Swelling at the site of any surgical procedure is normal and as you know and of course the pacemaker is felt just below the skin and is visible.
When was the pacemaker put in? I know you mentioned he is at the end of life, so I was just curious as to when it was put in.

I know you decided not to give your dad anything on your own and I am glad you did. That would be the last thing you need.

I am so very sorry about your dad. It is so very hard to lose a parent and even harder when we feel we have no control over
their care, especially at the end of their lives.
Keep pushing for your dad's needs. No reason he must experience any pain.
Make sure they take a look at the pacemaker site. If you should notice any increase in swelling or redness at the site, it could be an infection.

Keep us posted. My thoughts are with you my friend and please keep yourself healthy through this. We often
forget ourselves and our own needs which is completely understandable.

thanks candy - they told us to make plans and policy now but he may well get through this.

the swelling is protein or plasma (not sure which) around his pacemaker and they worked on his leg. he just doesn't eat but I hope he does soon.

It's hard seeing him with massive bruises and swollen bits but he's handling it well.

I appreciate the support. he now has to lay flat for a few hours so I left the hospital ... I'm reducing my dose at the same time but that's ok so far.

huh your right. has it always been naloxone? for YEARS i've thought it was naltrexone/wasn't the same ingredient as narcan (and ive had a script for suboxone the better part of the last decade)

i guess embedda has morphine/naltrexone, but i could have SWORN subs did as well

I think so.  I never heard of embeddable, so I looked it up quick.  The naltrexone was in a candy centre that couldn't be dissolved in your stomach unless you chew it.

They have similar effects, but naltrexone is slower acting, longer lasting, and is active orally.  They use it as long term treatment for abstinence and alcoholics and the name brand is revia.  It doesn't make much sense in an oral med because it would kick the opiates off their receptors.

Anyways, Im glad you worked it out too chipper.  I hope your dad gets better soon.  How old is he?

Sorry to hear about your grandfather, Chipper.

My mom passed away last month at age 93. They had her on a fent patch the last month and morphine as needed. Me and my brother pushed the doc to start dosing her with morphine as she was experiencing breakthrough pain. They didn't need much convincing re the morphine. They were also giving her Xanax to calm her when she got agitated. We had pretty good luck pushing the doctors to up her pain meds. Just keep after them. We said we could tell she was still in pain and very firmly asked that they up her doses to keep up with the pain. We had POA (power of attorney) so that might have helped. No one should have to be in pain at end-of-life.

Thanks CC. He is actually now showing signs of improvement and they are trying to walk him. He is no longer complaining about pain so that's a big relief.

I really appreciate your concerns and it's good to talk about it.
