Oh shit, I hope I don't have to hang my head in shame @Griffin.
Seriously though, It's a review of a book that this woman wrote about addiction & recovery that looks like it shows some perspective on the fact that tough love is bullshit & 12 step recovery doesn't work for everyone.

It looks pretty good, I don't know if this is sad or weird but I don't read because if I goto jail I want to have something to do and don't want to have read all the good ones, which is probably a physically impossibility. Oh geeze does this mean they have won? I am that afraid and doubtful that I wont return that I consciously don't read. I like in the interview that she is straight up about not going to prison for being caught with a few kilos of coke that makes me think it's going to be decent.

Well, lucky for any non-readers out there, this one has an audio version. It's about 32 minutes, just press "Listen" at the top of the page.

This is the same journalist who wrote the addiction-myths article that dizzle posted:

http://forum.drugs-and-users.org/index.php/topic,2711.msg30423.html#msg30423

The concept of addiction being a learning disorder as opposed to a disease or a moral failing really resonates with me.

I heard the story on npr & thought her pretty even/reasonable, ie not condemning of aa while definitely being a proponant of newer ways of looking at/treating addiction.  I steer clear of those with an obvious anti-aa agenda.  It does work for many and still has it's place.  Owe my life to it probably but it just ain't where I'm at nowadays.  I still pop into a meeting from time.  "So how much time you got?"  "Not much, haha, but it's all good."

That's about exactly what I thought about it too Moe. I liked that she was saying that while 12 step programs have a place, treatment is a totally separate thing, and that treatment centers should stop focusing on 12 step based abstinence being the only valid option for addicts. I have all the love in the world for AA & NA. When I got clean in 98 it was what kept me clean for 7 years. My problem was I got arrogant & complacent, and before long I got loaded. I got clean again in 07, but this time on MMT and haven't done any 12 step recovery the entire time. I've kept in contact with a few people I was close too, but as far as meetings I never got back into the middle of it. I still think about going sometimes, but generally find some excuse as to why I can't lol.
