Ouch man.  Looks painful.  Here's hoping that you get better quick and as painlessly as possible.

Did the cops get involved?  Is the vehicle a write off or not too bad?

Sheesh that looks painful. Glad it wasn't worse though. So the airbag did all that?

Yes totally creepy that you ended up in a graveyard, but happy you won't be taking
up residency there.

How was the old lady? Was she injured?

@Chops you are a hoot!

Hey Lawyerup, is your name a reference to Breaking Bad?

I hope you heal quickly - don't pick any scabs, they're nature's bandaids!

How exactly did you get injured? What in your car caused this?

Fuck man.

Hope you recovery quickly and with minimal pain.

Between the hours of 10am and 3pm, I keep vigilant for the "Silver Heads" (old folks) when driving.

It seems those hours (in between rush hour) is when they feel safe enough to venture out in their cars.

I hate to be an Agecist, but the majority of accidents I've been in have been due to the poor judgement, eyesight and driving of our geriatric citizens.

I truly worry that some idiot will cause an accident that involves me; and I'll be forced to have a drug test.  That might reveal my poppy seed bagel addiction.  Would be a tough legal battle to win.

Well..... At least your bones stayed inside of you.

I remained conscious for nearly an hour and a half with a femur looking back at me.

Here's to having some action..... I refused to pay the extra six bucks for uninsured motorist. So I got nothing out of it but a few pity fucks and a dope habit twenty times worse than the one I already had.

I'm a glass half full kinda guy....

get well soon, bro' - that hand looks like it hurts real bad. i'm glad that it's not any worse ... vehicular misadventure is a very common path to hospitalisation ... and even worse ... so you're kind of lucky, too.

go with it.

Yes, to a point they'll pass it off as incidental, if they were to check for the LEVELS (not just the presence), they will figure something odd is going on.

Good post though!

I can't imagine  how the OP felt in the midst of the accident.  IIRC, he lost his brother to a fatal collision somewhat recently.

I am sorry you had to endure both situations.  It would probably give plenty of people a bit of PTSD, so I definitely understand that.  Take care of yourself.
Title: Re: accident
Post by: monkawat on September 29, 2015, 11:48:46 AM
The symptoms of PTSD can start immediately or after a delay of weeks or months, but usually within 6 months of the traumatic event, not the day of the event.

You are most likely just suffering from the shock, trauma, pain, and anxiety of the immediate aftereffects from the car wreck. I highly doubt you will have a true manifestation of PTSD from this event. It was likely scary and traumatic, but I doubt you will suffer from the lifelong, debilitating psychological condition because of it. I wouldn't be too worried about that. Focus on your physical recovery and I'm betting you'll get along allright.

http://www.aafp.org/afp/1999/0801/p524.html

However, if you do have PTSD related symptoms months down the road- that is a valuable piece of medical literature right there for these specific issues/events.

Don't think I'm trivializing what happened to you- It's seriously fucked up. I was hit by a drunk driver myself (in a jeep nonetheless- an old CJ) and rolled multiple times which gave me my back injuries/CP issues. I had short term anxiety and environmentally related flashbacks (ie night driving on that same stretch of service road) but it didn't cause the permanent psychiatric damage that my actual PTSD inducing events caused over a decade ago.

Some of us (vets in particular) just get a little sensitive when that word gets thrown around these days..

Hope you heal soon.

Jesus, lawyerup.  I hope you heal quickly and make some money off this.  Start documenting your injuries and what they keep you from doing, as well as any additional expenses (medical or otherwise, taxis, etc) now, and also your missed work/income.

Trauma and its after-affects are in undergoing a slow process of being reevaluated and recategorized in the therapy world, since the majority of people who present with PTSD like symptoms get that way from complex trauma (an ongoing extended traumatic situation or relationship, like being abused as a kid or watching a loved one die of cancer), rather than shock trauma (from a specific and singular violent life-threat event).  So I dont think its useful to draw a hard line between what is and what isnt a severe traumatic reaction.  The spectrum of PTSD symptoms is variable anyway, not everyone has it the same way.

The BEST thing you can do to mitigate long term, debilitating trauma response is to keep talking about your experience, your feelings, your recovery, etc. with someone who will just listen without trying to fix or judge or change you.  Counseling or a group for trauma survivors would not be a bad idea (and could probably be reimbursed as part of your covered medical expenses in a lawsuit or settlement, although you prob already knew that.)

If there is no one like that you can talk to ANYWHERE near you, keep a diary and keep writing in it regularly as if you were talking to someone like that.

OH and anyone who has experienced serious trauma or has PTSD would be really advised to read "Waking the Tiger" by Peter Levine.  Amazing book about the way trauma works in the body and the brain, the evolutionary purpose of our flight/flight/freeze system, and how the trauma cycle hijacks it, as well as how to get it back working properly again.  He uses his studies of wild animals, who frequently experience life-threatening circumstances (being chased by a predator, etc) without being traumatized by them, as well as information on neuroplasticity, to use somatic (body, movement, sensation) tools to develop a way to re-process traumatic experiences and get them stored properly as memories of the past, rather than constantly triggered and relived.

That looks awful bro.  Is it healing well at this point?  Is your hand usually shaped like that, or is it broken?  A broken hand is awful.

I have smashed a few fingers and it was brutal. Everything you take for granted is suddenly painful and very difficult.  It was a humbling experience.

This forum of " open-minded" people looks pathetic as fuck. Thats just my opinion. Lets crucify this chick because she made a mistake? WTF is up with that? Because she did what every other one of us does, we should stake her? What if this " victim" is on the edge and something like this pushes her over? I mean, its whatever but, shit like this makes me want to kill people instead of house them if some crazy apocalypse breaks out. It is what it is though.

Don't take the first, or even second offer. These insurance companies usually go by a set rate based on body part, and how extensive the injury is.

I received 4x the amount of the first offer after this drunk idiot smashed into me and crushed two vertebrae. Good thing he had decent insurance, most down here just have PIP.

After the crooked attorney took his 33.3% and all the medical bills I was left with just under 80k.

We took took the guy for the max his insurance carried. He would've lost miserably in the civil trial as he was convicted of dui w serious bodily injury.

Oh: Make sure you document EVERYTHING that has to do with your injuries. Lost work, inability to walk your dog, everything.
