Title: The Shaming of Addicts
Post by: candy on September 12, 2016, 08:13:29 AM
I am sure by now many of you have seen the picture of the couple who were photographed by a police officer in East Liverpool, Ohio after they had overdosed with their child in the backseat watching this take place.
I really didn't see if this has already been posted. I am just outraged by it.
Pictures out there on the internet coming from every angle.
The fucking cops can stop and take pictures while that woman is turning blue when they should of taken that child out of the car and started
administering help immediately.

The public shaming of this couple is fucking disgusting. I felt sick to my stomach when I saw the story and pictures.
The city claims they posted the pictures as a way to inspire people to seek help. Bullshit and they know it. Sure makes a great story.
Those photos don't help addicts at all.
Was that really their intention to help addicts?  Scare tactics! I feel terrible for that couple and for their child.

I myself rarely used in my car. If only to get well when there wasn't a place to use privately until I could get home.
I cannot imagine having one of my kids in the car and overdosing.

I did take my youngest son with me to pick up dope when I could not find someone to watch him.
He was a toddler and I waited to get home before I used, but just having him in the car while I scored made me really nervous.

I cannot imagine having my picture out there for everyone to see, especially in that situation of an overdose.
Those pictures are not going away and it will only make things worse for every addict.

Administering life saving measures to these parents should of made the news if had to be reported, not photos of them slumped over turning blue.
No one truly cared about saving lives at that moment.

I agree! Those pictures should have never been released to the public. I can understand why they needed to be taken.... Evidence for court, for cps, ect.

I saw the pictures and had the same immediate reaction, it was fucked up to run the pics in a newspaper and on the internet. The people need help, and more importantly the child's safety should be LE and the EMS's number one priority. This made me think about all the times I could have been in the same boat; no kid in the backseat but I have most definitely knocked out in my car before. I would hope that (if I had needed it) someone would have helped me rather than snap some pictures of me slumped over. Some people are fucking awful...

Those pissed me off, to top it off the cops released more photos of them holding the kid and "comforting" him after they just publicly shamed their parents, as to make another story of how wonderful cops are and how horrible all addicts are, made my skin crawl.

I'm so fucking pissed off by this. Those inhuman fucks. "Let me just get my phone out of my pocket, unlock it, load my camera app and take several photos before trying to resuscitate anybody." Christ, her lips are visibly blue. She could be seconds away from irreparable brain damage or worse!
I fucking hate the police.
Goddamn
I can't wait for Trump to take office so the police can abuse our people even more...

It's a very powerful image and I think the saddest part is that those 2 are going to pick up as soon as they get out of jail.

It was a horrible thing to do. Those pics aren't going to make any junkie say, "Oh geez, that's so scary. I think I'll get clean tomorrow just because I saw these." They were taken to shame these folks and nothing else. I mean, maybe if you really stretch it you could say that someone who has never picked up might have more reason not to after seeing them, but even that is iffy at the least. Not to mention that by posting them with the child's face unobscured this shit will likely follow him around as well. He's going to go to school and people are going to look at him and say, "Oh look it's that poor kid with the junkie grandma that OD'd in the car with him." That will just perpetuate the shaming of this family for god knows how long.
I saw it and it made me feel ashamed. I never OD'd in my car with my son,  but when he was a toddler I dragged him around with me to cop, fixed in bathrooms with him, went to places no child should go, etc. So of course seeing these brought up all those feelings around me being a shit mom for a couple of years. Thankfully I got on MMT when he was 3 and haven't touched dope since, so he doesn't remember any of that & my daughter has never seen me loaded, but fuck if I'll ever forget it & stuff like this brings it back up every time.

@jonnyr3b, most likely they will use again once released, unless this experience brings them to a decision to stop using.
I imagine most people who have never dealt with addiction would think that they would be fools to ever use again, but that is just not the reality for
someone addicted to opiates. I imagine if they are still locked up they are in some serious withdrawals.

I am not certain what I would do if I were in their shoes. I know I would feel extremely ashamed if it were my child in that car with me when those photos were taken.
As I said in my OP, I took my son with me to buy dope when he was little. I hated having him in
the car with me and then asking me who that man was and what I was doing. I knew he might tell his father.
My ex-husband was not happy about us splitting up and me being around other men. I knew he would question my son trying to find out who the guy was
and what we were doing.
Meeting some guy in a parking lot who jumped in and out of my car would be hard to explain. I never wanted to tell my kid that he couldn't tell daddy what where we just went and what mommy did.

I imagine that these poor people are going to have enough to deal with when it comes to their son and having him come home.
Sadly, that poor little boy is going to suffer. Maybe the parents will come out of this and go on MMT or have to do whatever the court mandates.
They certainly can't deny their actions and will be scrutinized for a long time to come.

I think that it's as much a representation of our society as a whole.  We have turned into voyeurs behind the screens of our devices.  Watching instead of being part of the world around us.

I can't count the number of times I've seen something happen, and instead of helping everyone whips out their phone to film it.  Fuck those cops, but they did act just like the rest of us.

If it was law enforcement or first responders who took the picture, they should be fired immediately!  Their job is to fucking help, not snap pictures of people who are, in fact, in the process of dying!  This just shows the stigma that surrounds addiction.  If this was a car crash where someone was dying I guarantee  no one would be snapping pictures, much less posting them all over the internet.  They would be too busy trying to rescue the victims!

If addiction is considered a disease (and it is) then these assholes have just plastered this couples private health information all over the net!  It is disgusting and criminal and I am fucking pissed!!!  What about protecting the identity of the child? Who gave then permission to publish his image?  If I was a relative of this couple I would hire a lawyer to look at all this shit...it may not be illegal, but it should be.

Again,,,whoever took the picture....you are an asshole and I hope if you ever suffer from a medical crisis and are about to die, I hope your treatment is delayed so we can all take pictures!  Fucktard!

What the general public fail to understand is that an OD is always an unintentional accident, like a car accident.

Top priority is to assist the victims, not to take pictures to sell or share to make headlines.

You never hear or get explanations of why people become addicts ... we are always painted as hedonistic and selfish fuck ups.

Shaming us just makes us angry and does nothing useful, it's all about them showing us how better they are than us, I believe.

It would be a different story if they were related to those photographed but since they're strangers then apparently it's ok.

And the crazy part is that some of us are going to think "their dope must be pretty good, I wonder if I can find some ?" or anything but "that's it, I'm over it and I'm going to give it up for ever, right now".

All those images do is reinforce the hatred of haters.

It should be illegal to procure and publish such material.

That pic has been out for a little while now right?

I saw that damn shit.

It had ZERO effect on me, on a "Man I gotta straighten my shit out" Level.

And had EVERY intended true effect.... "Ewwww, junkies"

Even though I identify with said sub culture, it has an effect on the eyes that just inspire SHAME.

Nothing useful comes from that kinda propaganda.

Except now that little child will be immortalized as THE KID IN THE CAR WITH HIS STRUNG THE FUCK OUT FOLKS
