The message is that if you are involved in internet related child pornography then you will be caught eventually.

The sheer numbers involved indicate that their are many sexually sick people out there.

There's a forum for everything, I guess.

The article raises some interesting ethical issues.

They didn't necessarily crack tor.  It sounds more like they compromised one specific website.  They did this before with a JavaScript exploit.

Yes back in 2013, the malicious JavaScript, that is why they tell you to disable JavaScript on Tor.  I wonder how they did it this time?  For Tor users I would say to update everything and avoid running add-ons.  I agree they didn't "crack Tor" but there is a vulnerability somewhere, I'm glad that disgusting site got taken down, but who's to say they (FBI) haven't taken over other sites, sites that people like us might use.  It's ironic now that the FBI has one up on a tech company, its revenge for the Apple situation.

I mentioned that this tactic was actively being used within the last couple weeks. The cops are using malware trojans, probably loaded through javascript or some browser vuln, to infiltrate computers and leak identifying data. It's really kinda bullshit that they can get some warrant signed in bumfuck virginia and then search anyone's machine they happen to get their little skript to run on. This is a massive overreach of search and seizure laws. Not that I don't think CP goons should be executed by ebola, but the fucking feds need to stick to the rules. This bullshit of "ya we implanted an NIT, but we can't tell you about it" is straight bullshit and it's not gonna fly for long.

I bet they're using the same vuln on other stings right now, so if you're running games on the dnms, you might wanna lay low until some more info comes out about exactly what they've been doing and more on what this apparent trojan is about.

So it safe to assume all the three letter agencies are using this malware.  Hopefully with the indictments of the CP creeps we can get some info on how the malware works.  The Java malware that was put out in 2013 only effected windows users, so there is hope we can figure out how to be protected while using Tor as more info becomes public.

Surprisingly, I can't find any info on this on the Tor reddit page.  If anybody comes across info on this, please post it, I find this tech stuff interesting.

I did see that they got a server, so not a true 'crack'.
However, it seems Tor users are not as safe as they believed.
The effort needed for a user to "wall-off" Tor seems an order of magnitude more difficult now.
Federales prolly have Trojan-esque tech that no AV can stop. "Thanks NSA" !
Targets were  child porn, true ... but they could just as easily go after the perceived 'degenerate druggies' ; focusing on dealers at first then users that they have a hard-on for. Seems likely to me.
It will be interesting to see if more information leaks out about their capabilities.

They're gonna have to start talking unless they're gonna plea out however many people they just popped.

It'll come out.

the fbi took over and ran the paedophile site "playpen" for over a month.  everyone in the case virtually went free, the fbi got in big trouble for this.  do your research next time

True. A judge threw out the cases over a jurisdictional issue. It was a major overreach on the FBIs part. Too bad a bunch of pedophiles went free, but the feds knew better.

   From the link :
"A national court policymaking group already approved the government’s request to change the rules.
But both the Supreme Court and Congress must eventually sign off on the change,
which would go into effect on Dec. 1 if approved."

Good point 40, like the post above said, we will know for sure based on the Supreme Court ruling.  I'm still worried that the feds have the Malware and they refuse to release it to Mozilla so they can patch it.  If they share the Malware with the other federal three letter agencies, people will still be at risk.  Journalist use Tor, and we all know what happened to Michael Hastings.  I think they still would be able to issue a Warrent(s) to the individual(s) who run certain marketplaces and arrest them.  And if that person breaks or goes into witsec in exchange for their client list, they still could charge everybody using said market. Am I wrong thinking that?

It is still very disturbing knowing that the three letter agencies have access to this Malware and that is spooky enough for me. I'm not sure how ethical those Federal bastards are.  They could get the info from the Malware and make it look like it was a random search.  Who knows what stunts they could pull.
