Beaches and bongs

MAY 25, 2017

If there's anybody in the world who truly loves smoking weed out of a bong, it's the Australians.

At least, that's according to the fascinating 2017 Global Drug Survey, which examines drug habits around the world.

Three-quarters of the 5,700 Australian participants in the survey had used illicit drugs, and marijuana is the most used illegal drug — even more prevalent than legal drugs like caffeinated drinks and tobacco, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

While Australians aren't the world's biggest weed smokers, water pipes, a.k.a. bongs, were more popular in the country than anywhere else.

We're not exactly sure why there's a preference for what's often dubbed the "Gatorade Saxophone," but it does prompt repeated thefts of garden hoses and businesses dedicated to creating ceramic bongs out of the country's cultural and sporting icons. Go figure.

In other weird weed habits, Australians slightly prefer mixing marijuana with tobacco, according to the survey. That's compared to folks from New Zealand and the Americas, who prefer straight marijuana. In Europe, on the other hand, mixing in tobacco is highly preferred.

MDMA, cocaine, and LSD are the other most used drugs in Australia, despite cocaine costing on average A$321 (US$239) a gram there. That's double the cost in the next most expensive nation, excluding New Zealand. By comparison, Columbia's local price for cocaine is A$5.26 (US $2.39) a gram.

That all said, there's long been calls for drug reform in Australia. Some jurisdictions like South Australia, the Northern Territory, and the Australian Capital Territory have decriminalised cannabis, but in other states, depenalisation is the only option for the drug.

That's despite most Australians supporting some form of decriminalisation for all drugs, and the country's government's being increasingly pro-medicinal cannabis.
