Police warning over dangerous drugs

MERCURY SEPTEMBER 07, 2015 3:14PM

FIVE people have been hospitalised in the North-West after taking drugs they believed were ecstasy.

Tasmania Police have issued a public safety warning as a result of the incident, which occurred in Smithton at the weekend.

After taking the drugs the five became violently ill with symptoms including vomiting, dilated pupils and unconsciousness.

The drugs were bought separately outside a licenced venue in Smithton at about 8pm.

One person remains in hospital.

Police say each of the five people had purchased a clear capsule containing brown grains/powder.

“Investigations are continuing into the source of these drugs. We’d urge anyone not to consume any illicit substance and in particular any capsules containing brown powder,” Detective Inspector Kim Steven said.

Anyone with information about these matters is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
