Now that's one hell of a statement but I know how they feel as Meth can change, rule and twist your neurology and your life around.

Ice users would rather be dead than live without crystal meth, commission told

Ice users had said they'd "prefer to be dead" than live without ice, a senior NSW family and community services officer told the special commission into the drug on Thursday.

A hearing in Dubbo heard evidence from across western NSW that ice had caused unprecedented family breakdowns, poor literacy and numeracy, prostitution by a student, crime, violence, and addiction in children aged as young as 12.

The far west region spanning 72,000 square kilometres was in "a state of desperation" with resources spread "thin", the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Drug 'Ice' heard.

The situation was so acute, said a drug and alcohol expert, that if the crystal methamphetamine (ice) addict couldn't get help when needed, the user would likely be dead within six months.

Children aged as young as 12 were using ice, yet detox services weren't available in NSW for children under 16, the commission heard.

Distance and remoteness also made access to services harder, especially for Indigenous people.

Young people were only able to detox in juvenile detention, said Madeleine Baker, who coordinates Mission Australia's Mac River rehabilitation.

Since 2018, the number of adolescents using ice referred to the Mac River had nearly doubled. Ice use was also more prevalent in Indigenous youth at the centre with about 84 per cent using.

Every expert reported that most people using ice were also mixing it with other drugs, and most suffered from mental illnesses, including anxiety and depression, and were using ice to self medicate.

Senior Family and Community Services (FACS) officer Teena Bonham said communities were "desperate"  to break the cycle of addiction.

Ms Bonham said "as an Aboriginal woman who has lived and worked in the Western District all my life, I don't recall a time when I have witnessed a drug consume significant numbers of our communities and families at the pace it has".

"They are telling me that ice is crippling their communities, that they've never seen anything like this before," she said.

Of the 117 children who were taken into out of home care from January 1, 2018 to May 15, 2019, approximately 79 children were from homes where parents were using drugs, she said.

To keep children safe and keep them out of the system, "aunties, pops and nans" were intervening earlier. Users told her that "addiction is immediate".

"Whilst they hate it and do not want to use it, the thought of not using it is too terrifying, and that they would prefer "to be dead",'" Ms Bonham said in her statement.

Users had told her, "quite blatantly, " that they'd "prefer to die" because it is 'too scary (to think) of giving it up, she said in evidence.
