Title: I'm going to be a toofless tweaker as 12 (all back teeth) gotta go !
Post by: Chip on September 08, 2015, 10:37:42 AM
you know that stereotypical toothless tweaker in the caravan park ? that's now me. *groan*

at least i'm lucky that my teeth barely show when i talk and smile so my tweakerness is not obvious.

it's true - drugs dry your mouth, then you crave sweet stuff and then you forget to brush - it's that simple.

sorry to gross you out.

Dentures? False teeth?- Losing that many teeth will change the shape of your face and impact on your diet.

they had to go due to multiple infections already damaging the bone.

no choice in the matter. will get dentures for those back teeth, next.

Chipper what is the dental insurance like in Aus? Just wondering because its basically non existent here unless you pay a fortune in monthly premiums, which in the end, cost as much as the actual thousands of dental work you have done.

Try not to get too down. Like you said, your teeth don't really show, and its the back teeth right?. can you not get implants due to bone loss? My sis had bone loss and they used bovine bone/cartilage to replace it.

PS..you could never gross us out  ;)

I found a free public dentist but have to wait months to get in and then big gaps between treatments.

I am on benefits so I'm eligible.

some bone has been damaged to the point where implants are not possible so firstly, he will rip out the lost and infectious teeth then we will fix the remaining teeth then look at partial dentures.

I am so down on myself for trashing my teeth - if anyone young reads this then please look after your teeth (as a drug user) because you really want to keep your own.

how are the top teeth?

much the same. front and side teeth are ok - it's just the back ones that will go.

curbing the persistent infections are the priority.

... but i'm a bit upset that I did this to myself.

How are you curbing the infections? Are you on antibiotics? Or rinsing with peroxide?

I am only rinsing with warm, salty water with a script for Amox. on hand if feel any discomfort or raised temperature.

and I'm hoping luck is with me.

do think I should take the antibiotics anyway ?

It depends, how long do you have to wait for the procedure? I'd probably hang on to it until/unless you feel fever or major pain/discomfort. you'll need them more then than now. And taking too many anti-b's lessens their effects.

Maybe throw in some hydrogen peroxide with the warm salt water in the meantime.

dentist says to not smoke etc. for 72 hours.

no sign of pain or bleeding.

fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed. this too shall pass.

Eeek!!  A big NO NO NO to the peroxide. It's toxic. Even if you don't ingest enough to hurt yourself, it harms tissue. It's why we no longer use it for abrasions in schools and discourage use at home because it destroys the healthy tissue surrounding the wound.

If you DO end up needing antibiotics, Opi-ette is right re:judicious use. For reason such as MRSA etc. Try to make sure you're given an anaerobic antibiotic (clindamycin or the like) as a lot of tooth infections go down into the jawbone. The bacteria survive without oxygen, so even though clindamycin is stronger & can be hard on the body, it will kill off an infection that would otherwise keep returning.

While you're waiting, if you can try to do salt water rinses a few times every day (even after your incision heals), it may help reduce your risk of infection.

Really hope this gets fixed for you asap :(

Hi Chipper, here I am the stereotypical Brit with bad teeth, here to make you feel better! I have full dentures top and bottom and its not so bad, honest.

I started with a partial denture at the top. I had a fall and lost three top front teeth (yes I was drunk) then my remaining teeth got looser and it was time to say goodbye to them in one foul swoop. Time for full dentures.

I'll be honest they do take a lot of getting used to and with a partial you will automatically still use your natural teeth to chew even though those natural teeth are front teeth and not designed for chewing.

I didn't use My dentures properly till I had a full set. Now I sleep in them (my moth feels as weird without them as it once felt with them) I can eat pretty much everything except bite into an Apple, can still snog (in case you wondered) and they look ok. Photo on profile page.Mine were free on the UK NHS so they are not by any means top of the range. No implants but don't need to use glue.

I was only 41 when I lost all of mine so yours lasted way longer than mine.

Don't beat yourself up. Any questions, give me a shout.

Oy veh! My bad!! I grew up on the stuff and had no idea...Chipper listen to S&W and ex-nay the peroxide.

Yo Chipper really consult a doctor on this......The type of antibiotic is also critical because not all antibiotics work for all bacteria; you need to know if the bacteria in your mouth is gram-positive or negative and which one is best indicated for your mouth bacteria as that will be where the greatest risk is etc.

I would follow doctors orders to a T and take the antibiotics they gave you; you don't really have many chances to risk anything when it comes down to such a serious mouth procedure.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_antibiotics

Also, I don't understand how you "might need antibiotics" if they were prescribed to you.  Isn't the implication of something being prescribed that you need it?

my A/B requirement is only if the wound gets infected.

the dentist who prescribed said that I don't need to fill the script unless I feel discomfort SHOULD the infection not clear up.

I just don't want to get dry socket because it sounds painful. that means no smoking but I'm going to sneak a couple.

I'm trying to stop smoking but now at day 3, I can't resist and am currently waiting for the cheap tobacconist to open.

Thank You for your concerns, it feels lighter since I chose to share the fall out of a lifetime of amphetamine use.

I was pleasantly surprised to find NO pain from the procedure - even the local shot of "something 'caine" was tightly focused, highly effective and painless. that's a first.

BTW, I couldn't chat like this to a forum full of tweakers and still identify with the "opiate set" primarily because, despite their DOC, opiate users are more my people.

being strung out on stimulants doesn't make for intelligent and stimulating conversation.

despite stims being my drug of choice, I only stick with my crystal using buddy who's a really nice, older dude.

yeah, I doubt that I could hold such a conversation with a tweaker ... love the drug but hate the scene.

... and I especially hate the drug's impact on my dental wellbeing.

Just a word to the wize chip, if I were you Id go ahead and at least fill the script anyways even if you dont use them.

Ya never know when you might need some antibiotics around, and they are a God send to habe around when you do need them.

I feel for you bro.  My theeth are in terrinle condition and all th3 brushing and flossing and rinsing in the world didnt help me.  I also got a bunch of not so great back teeth that are still operable and crownable but dont have the money to do so.

I also had the two mising front teeth that I wish I got a marylamd style bridge for, but ended up getting the adjacent ones ground down for the crown bridges.  I couldnt afford to get the permanent ones so I payed ( a fucking lot) to get the temporary ones permanemtly glued in until I could afford the permanent ones.

Well that day didnt come and I was really happy with having a smile again, until about six months later, the ones I had came unglued when I was eating and I crunch3d down and destroyed them.  So now instead of having the original two missing teeth, I have the two missing teeth and hideous nubs that stained quickly due to the outside of the teeth being ground down for the bridges.

Oy vey!!!  I hate it and really am pretty sure that the iv usage over the years had an absolute big role to play on the terrible condition of my teeth that I have brushed and and flossed and waxed, and still do, religously.

Oh man its really fucking misrable.

Not to go against Seven's advice regarding filling the script early, as I agree to having them when you need them, but some do turn toxic when expired. I don't know if this is true for ALL anti-b's but it is for Cipro. I begged my Rhumey to write me up a script for it so I could have it on hand as me and cellulitis go hand in hand and I was getting sick to death of running off to the ER for a drip. I immediately filled the script and found out later on just by obsessively reading that they are toxic when expired.

@Seven I'm sorry to hear about your dental issues as well. Drugs are a MF on dental health, no matter how diligent. The one thing physically I never had issues with were my teeth. I got kicked in the ass with a bunch of other medical issues, but I thanked the heavens the one thing I never had to worry about were my teeth. Well, looks like I'm starting to get the beginnings of some dental issues. Nothing severe but for going so long with zero problems to issues cropping up almost overnight.....its definitely the pills.

You know, I dont fill scripts too often.  I think I remember some scripts for the lower classed drugs can actually be filled way after their written, if thats the case your right, wouldnt want them sitting around and going to waste.

I actually order antibiotics from a website that makes them "for fish aquariums" and " for birds" as a front.  They are clearly being made for humans and have quality controls in place and also are made in the u.s.

That shit has saved my ass many times.  Love that site.

Yeh, my dental woes are just damned depr3ssing.  The drugs definately take their tolls.

Fucking iving, I really believe is the maine source of my terrible teeh situation.

Wow is that right? Good to know! Thanks for passing that along as I'm sure it will come in handy in the future.

What makes you think IVing makes it worse than other forms of ingestion? Just wondering.

PS: I could go on a tirade about dental insurance in the US or the lack thereof...but I think I'll try and keep my BP down for a while  ;)

I filled that script quick smart when the night sweats came.

good advice.

I have recovered now -  10 to go.

I am not the kind whose teeth you can see easily so at least it isn't obvious.

thanks for the concern. now i chew like a chipmunk :)

Awww... so sorry for all of you/us that have dental problems; the pain, the expense - I know.   I tried to take good care of my teeth, but opiates really, really cause dry mouth and if you're already susceptable to decay; well - that's it.

From time to time when I had money/insurance/etc.  I've managed to have several implants and crowns (like six of them?) plus some back teeth pulled that I could get by without (they were really decayed and had been filled several times, etc.)

More root canals than I can count.  Have a partial upper denture now, plus three crowns on my front teeth (upper) that I am super careful with - no biting into stuff, etc.

I noticed a big difference when I started using Biotene mouthwash (keeps the mouth naturally un-dry.. much better than any mouthwash with alcohol, etc.)    Since I've been using it I don't think I've had any new cavaties which is a big deal for me.  It's not cheap but it might be worth it vs. the dentist.  Use it a.m. and p.m.   And get those little between  the teeth "proxi-brushes" if you're not good about flossing.

My dentist always says if you're only going to do one thing with your teeth, floss.  Preferably brush (along the gum line) AND floss... but yeah.  Floss.

Edited to add:
Love, your DaU Mom

I have implants too
I had to have my first one
On one of my front teeth
When I was in grade school
And got tripped on the ice by some kid and it broke my front tooth
Then I got hooked on fentynal lollipops
Which made my bottom teeth start to get cavities very badly
Other than drugs
My teeth are one thing I had spent the most money on

Dental care should be free no matter what. It's kinda of a way to keep the classes separated. If you dint have a fabulous smile then you don't get very far in life. I feel where you are coming from regarding the looks aspect, but it is also a health issue as well. With poor dental health, it affects the body as well...specifically the heart. There is a connection between the two. So in that regard, it costs more in the long run when things go untreated.

be true to thy teeth, lest they be false to you.

I cannot stress enough that dental health is always threatened by drug use and often yells "user" to many people that make the right guess but shouldn't know.

That is true Opi-ette
Although rare you can get bacterial endocarditis
Thru dental issues

But
In the society in which we live
If you don't have a damn near perfect smile
You are looked down upon a lot of times

Then
On the other hand
If you do have close to perfect teeth

I have implants too
I had to have my first one
On one of my front teeth
When I was in grade school
And got tripped on the ice by some kid and it broke my front tooth
Then I got hooked on fentynal lollipops
Which made my bottom teeth start to get cavities very badly
Other than drugs
My teeth are one thing I had spent the most money on

DoD (and anyone else w/experience), could you share about your experience with implants? I had 3 failed riot canals (back teeth) and have been told conflicting things like "Oh, it's great, no problems" and " I had it doe and both times my body rejected it", which I didn't even know was possible tbh.

Also,  I know it's expensive, but I'm also concerned about the procedure itself-  since they go into your jawbone, is it as painful as a root canal? Worse? Does healing take a long time?

Any info would really be appreciated as I'd like to get it done, but really have a hard time going to the dentist already--absolutely hate it, but if implants are worth it, I'd rather gut it out vs a partial! Many thanks for any info on this

fuckin laptop (I had a responce and lost it)
DoD says
Its not as painful as a root canal
yes they do go into the bone
some teeth were as muck a 4k
they have a new opition called a mini
they are great for a starting opition
she would answer this herself
but she is locked in a words with freinds battle
(you should see the backflips I have to do to get her attention when she is locked in battle mode)
the pain really depends on the dentist as you get what you pay for
sometimes it really is worth the extra hundred to get the better doc
shop around and haggle with them
some of them really are hurting for bussiness
any more I will difer to her

Thanks Hero & DoD for the info- very glad to hear it's not as bad as a root canal (they rarely can get me totally numb, even w-/Marcan cuz my facial nerves aren't usually in normal landmarks, so that's a relief to hear!

No rush but whenever y'all have the time, any info on how long it takes & what's involved (like multiple appts etc) would be really great to know.

Also, has anyone else heard about this rejection thing?  I'm wondering cuz if they dig down into the jawbone & this can happens, what's next? Do you have to wait weeks for it to heal before any other options like a bridge or a partial can be done?
Thanks again!

Just wanted to speak to the pain/suffering aspect + the rejection thing.

My first implants were back in the mid 1990's.  Those are still holding strong, no rejection.   The rejection aspect comes into play since often, a bone graft needs to be done to build up the jaw bone so it can serve as a good anchor for the implant.   I've had two different really super oral surgeons; they both used bovine bone!   (One of my procedures was celebrated at work with a big picture of a cow saying "Good luck from your donor" .   Also, implants can become loose over time if you develop gum disease or something.  You have to be committed (IMO) to taking care of your teeth after implants since you don't want to screw w/your investment!

IME..... implants are  much LESS painful than a root canal.   I've had implants done both using twilight anesthesthia  (out pretty cold) and local (was awake w/headphones, music, etc.)   Both were OK.   I really didn't have much pain afterwards but I tend to get kinda swollen up; my oral surgeon quite freely scripted percs (and refills) so I availed myself of those but didn't need them beyond day one.

I've had other implants after that (~ 2008).  Mine were all traditional  (not the new "mini" or get it done in a day procedure).   Typically they placed the implant, wait 4-6 months to make sure it's all stable, and then go back for the crown.

Very expensive but so very worth it.    So important as Hero said to pay for a good oral surgeon with a shitload of experience; SO important.  You def get what you pay for.

Yes, I def have the value of a super-nice vehicle in my mouth.   It is ludicrous that dental is separate from medical since dental probs can fuck up your whole system big time.

Agree w/Hero (I think it was him) that it's really a way to separate the classes; there's been studies done about the difficulty of  getting professional jobs w/bad teeth.

This is ALL about exactly the same as my experience
I didn't get put under
I didn't it with local anesthetic
I'm deeply terrified of Being put under

I wasn't informed of the rejection thing
But my oral surgeon did a thorough examination of my bone
And said I have really good bone structure

I've never had any problems with the one
That I've had since grade school
I am pretty careful with it

It is in no way
As painful as a root canal

My healing time was pretty much the same
Same amount of appointments too (IIRC)

You defo get what you pay for

I'm with you Suboxtitute
In that I have at least a decent used car
In my mouth
It is one thing that's defo worth it
Having a nice smile goes a long way

It sucks but it's true

Since getting on MMT 6 years ago, my teeth have literally disintegrated.  I'm a mouth breather to begin with and with the 'done my mouth is SO dry all the time.  It's shocking to me what has happened in my mouth.  It's so embarrassing to have bad teeth.  I'm hoping to get these pulled and get dentures sometime next year.  What really sucks is how many things I cannot chew anymore.  I miss chewing normally.  It's the one thing about myself I wish I could change...

I think damage to your teeth
Is the one physical draw backs
To long term opiates

And people put way to much
On others smiles.

I can totally relate. I have lost all my back ones and am embarrassed from a broken front tooth (won't get it pulled for the hole, it breaks more every day, but no way to get the partial yet). Mine is from strictly opiates, had great teeth until pain management.

Oh, and DoD, I love words with friends! My hubs feels like hero when I'm into a game and he is speaking to me..."huh?wha?" Lol

It's very upsetting to have them removed but I guess there's always hidden prices if you want to play.

opiates and Stims both dry your mouth out.

I exploit a side-effect of meth called blood thickening. akin to wounds needing to heal fast from the flight or fight days of hunting.

rapid healing results.

true that.

I'm 25 and am getting every piece of tooth removed and replaced and dentured for the remaining . In ny if ur under 28 Medicaid will pay for up to 7 implants which is nice. Scary major surgery involving bone removal due to osteomyelitis of my jaw with bone replaced from my rib being done as well. It'll be done in steps luckily due to the hiv we have to work slower to make sure no infections pop up

@mainline is the osteomyelitis and tooth damage from meth? Only being 25 that is scary! Did you not practice dentil hygine for an extended period of time? I'm not a expert on this kinda stuff so sorry if these are stupid questions but damn man, that's a hell of a lot to go through at such a young age.

Chipper-

Are you still smoking crank? If so can it damage the dental repair work? I hope not because i Make it not fevrstation for yourself You don't want to active among old friends and to have them gasp in shock to see our boy looking cadaverous.

I don't know what your situation is but my sister after years of smoking, and smoking crack and other things lost several of her teeth because the dry mouth that doing that created and she lost, teeth, bone and gums. Fortunately our mom wastook her to a dental specialist who rebult the bone and teeth from a s  cadaver's mouth which was somehow sterilized and grafted into her mouth.

It took at least a year to get the dead man's bone and teeth to be acceptedby hers and it was very painful During that time she nver really quit smoking cigarettes or other drugs and it slowed the healing process.

I hope you can get it all fixed and it sticks and you can avoid repeating the damage.

Good luck.

[EDITED TO ADD] I cleaned up the paragraphs above but the one below I think was an acidental cut and paste from something else I was writng about staying safe while doing prison time. The disturbing part is that I only remebr writng the part about my sisters  grafts and not the rest. But the time stamp shows I did it ealy this morning and I was up (and high) until about 5 AM so unless sinister forces are messing with me I must have been higher than I thought. I'll lave it as a reminder of why to proofread my work.

I believe it's the smoking of stims that inhibit production of saliva which normally prevent bacterial growth.

it gets you all ways, not any ROA in particular, I'd hazard a guess ...

it dries out your mouth and you crave sweet stuff which compounds the problem.
