Title: Methadone, an aquired taste?
Post by: DiacetylKineval on September 18, 2016, 12:25:20 PM
Ive taken a lot of methadone. If there was a notch on my belt for every pill, my belt would be in shreds.

Never been on maintenance of any kind, started buying them up after my longtime cpp friend stopped needing dillies for breakthrough pain.

At the time when i began to enjoy it, i had at least used heroin and oxy and hydros, and had slammed a sizable amount of dilaudid

But the very first few times i took it, not yet knowing he had dilaudid, methadone was a very strange feeling drug. I had at least done heroin and some pills by that point, so i knew the opiated feeling, granted not as well as i do now.

It felt almost like being on a bunch of prozac, not speedy at all, but i woke up a little bit more, and idk, it was just a weird speed-but-not-speed feeling and certainly didnt feel much like opiates. Since i got habituated to the dillies ive loved it, especially with some beer, and ive lowered my tolerance and gotten high on it many times.

As a side note, i didnt really get that high from heroin or even weed the first couple times, as if my brain needs to learn to process some things before getting the full effect. But the thing is, methadone definitely strongly affected me the first few times, just nothing like the way it ultimately would.

Kind of curious if anyone else has experienced this, or how the heck that could be possible

That's methadone for you.  It's an odd opiate since it's dissociative effects.

Thats an interesting way of putting it. Though i agree theres a level of 'dissociation' with any opiate, i wouldnt label methadone as particularly conducive to that effect.

Granted, i dont have much experience with dissociatives as a class of drug, and pcp and dxm seem vastly different to me so i may not have the concept down.

i was on methadone maintence for a few months and it works a lot better than suboxone, but i dont like getting fucked up from it AT ALL. im able to get compounded methadone (capsules of mainly pure methadone powder great for IVing) really cheap and the few times ive done it i didnt care for the buzz i got at all. with that said my friends all love compoounded methadone and normally buy them completely out (dude will come off 30 10mg's a month) it must be an acquired taste cause i certainly dont like it. its great for maintaining, sucks for getting high

Though i have IVed it, i really dont see any benefit and prefer to eat it.
Also, i wont get high obviously if ive had a smack habit. But if i start from not much tolerance its great.

Probably my favorite part is that it lasts so long its such a relief.

Although ive read somewhere about a study where people couldnt differentiate between heroin and methadone orally, im sure the heroin dose was compensated to be equal. But i definitely dont feel like id call them subjectively the same to me, really seems like a person could tell the difference

I mistakenly chose to make Methadone my doc. For decades, too add insult to injury.

I now have no veins, a huge tolerance, an over-familiarity with hospitals and infectious diseases and to boot, Im still on maintenance and desperate to put it behind me.

It was cheap and readily available and I experienced so little euphoria for my troubles, let me advise against IV Methadone for kicks.

Don't be "that guy" or me. Listen well, it's a bad trip and your treatment options just halved.

Not a moral judgement, just a cheapskate option I pursued and if I could go back and choose again, I wouldn't use unsterile Methadone for anything but short-term maintenance or tapers ... and always ORAL.

I never experienced the strange, speed-but-not-speed effect you described. Although you likened it to Prozac, so idk, because SSRI's make me EXTREMELY anxious. Nothing I hate more than SSRI's.

Methadone is definitely an acquired taste though. I went from a ~1g a day oxycodone habit to IV heroin, oxymorphone and basically anything else I could get into a rig before going on MMT for about a year and a half. At the time it was a beautiful relief, I was never sick and it simplified my life exponentially. It wasn't nearly as euphoric as a lot of other opiates in my experience though. And while I attribute it mainly to my own greed and continuing to raise my dose past where it was necessary, methadone was EXTREMELY sedating for me. At the end of my maintenance run, at anywhere from 120-150mg daily I was sleeping 16+ hours a day. Straight zombie.

Now, after some time away from opiates, I am really enjoying methadone again. I'm not taking it daily, but the handful of times I've had some in the past few weeks have been awesome. Maybe it's because I've been without any opioids for so long, but I'm getting a really pleasurable buzz. It's a strange substance for sure, but for me it's been a godsend. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

The methadone we get in most of the world isn't optically pure.  One of the enantiomers, d-methadone, is active as a classic opiate.  L-methadone on the other hand acts as an NMDA antagonist.  This is an action that we normally associate with dissociatives and anaesthetics.  This NMDA antagonism is what gives methadone the speedy high, and definitely acts as a dissociative at higher doses.  I suspect that this is part of the reason why methadone was so acceptable as a maintenance med to so much of the world, while classic opiates were not.  The dissociative effect can be self limiting for some people.  They don't like the methadone high, and so they just stick with their normal doses.

I think that it's in Germany that you can get pure dextro-methadone.  I have heard from people who used it, and I may have gotten some in powder form a few times myself, that it is nearly twice as strong as mixed enantiomer methadone.  It also isn't nearly as dissociative, and has a cleaner high.  It's not as speedy, and more what we would consider a traditional opiate.  Almost like Oxy I guess, although I was never big on Oxy.

Oh yeah, no passive aggression here.  Just addressing your uninformed opinion.
