I LOVE this idea!  I dont know if Im personally stable enough for it at the moment but I would love to help out in the future.

Suggest there be some kind of training, even if its bare bones, from someone who has done suicide line work before (even a website would do).

i doubt if many of us are really stable and emotionally equipped for such a role but we wanted to put it out there ... suicide is an under-discussed issue for people "in our line of recreation".

the best we can do for now is to scan this forum for anyone that's struggling with this - and to reply promptly.

i see it as one of those no-go areas that WE HAVE TO GO TO.

as someone who has attempted suicide, it's got to be of some help ... hell, just even talking about it is a major step forward for some poor isolated user that's down on their luck.

Great idea.

My first thought was an addict falling down and pressing a button though.

Someone could start training by chatting with me.....

I was, fucked with, last week and honestly I'm pretty down about it.  Just constantly upset, emotions moodswings and stupid thoughts, random fits of crying, I could use a conversation with someone in real time as my mind is veering to bad places and I believe the support of someone with credibility in this game could be crucial!

I wish Nick was better as he'd be a great person to chat with.

the only realtime facility is chat but due to it's lack of logging, we can't police it.

the next best option is the member's shoutbox.

then you have PMs and VMs but not really always in real time.

for what it's worth, I'm glad you found us and have given up your time to contribute - it means a lot to this fledgling forum.

This is a scary good idea. Im still exploring and just stumbled on this today. I would like to see it more prominently displayed...I agree about seeing a serious need that's not being met.

How would you go about setting it up?  For example, though shoutbox can't really be "policed", would it be viable?  Same question goes for chat?  Is there a way for info shared to be understood to be confidential? Ie an honor system of sorts, b/c this is a VERY sensitive topic?

Also, should we have some sort of "intention statement" along the lines of "Please remember this is the Internet and if you need IRL help.."

Not trying to poke holes in the idea, just trying to visualize how to get it going. The need seems pretty obvious. Heck, I would've loved to have someone to confidentially talk to earlier this month.

Im happy to help & do have training/experience, but I don't think that's a pre-req.  There are MANY smart compassionate folks here that I think would do a wonderful job.

**the ONLY worry I have is that someone will decide to harm themselves and the member(s) that tried to help that individual will in turn, suffer. I don't know how we could prevent that :(

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.
Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

Who's going to write the protocols and provide the training??

This is a nice idea, but the reality is something else.

I was hoping to attract those trained in this sort of thing.

the best we can do is grab those that reach out.

they can do this here.

whilst we can't stop them or ring 911, we can share with them our own struggles with addiction, including my own ex-vice, gambling.

if we only help, or try to, we need not fear incrimination.

I did the Samaritans training last year and decided not to continue with it. Even trained I felt woefully unprepared to deal with what can be essentially life and death situations-situations that can easily be exasperated by even a trained councillor.

I honestly think the best thing we can do at D&U is try, be kind ,listen to and not mock people.

Maybe a list of existing services would be a good start.  I would hate to think someone would say the wrong thing and make a bad situation even worse.

I am around at odd hours due to my work schedule.  If anyone feels the need they can reach out via message or email whenever needed.  I am also happy to make a call if the situation warrants it.

Hi Z-- Chipper does have contact info for Australia, USA etc listed already, but your offer is good too. When I Pmd Nick yesterday, one awesome idea he had was that we potentially make this a group project. (It's not something I would feel comfortable attempting solo).

What do y'all think about this: anyone who would like to offer their help, contact Nick?  If the decision is made to do anything beyond what we currently do (as Chipper said, we just try to help as the need pops up), we would need to know who all is willing to help and how they think it could be done.
