A Poem by Candy
« on: June 29, 2015, 01:43:46 PM »
One needle I kept, under my bed
In a box with childhood treasures…

Like an arrow so sharp, a poisonous dart
Aimed so precisely for my skin.

How alone I once felt, with no one to tell
The secrets I kept tucked away
Dulled by the years
Yet still can bring tears
Has anything at all really changed?

A prick, a pinch, a sting of the flesh
Means nothing to me without the slightest effect

10 years have gone by since I locked that old box.
And swallowed the only key.
The hinges are rusty, the wood a bit dusty
it’s what is inside that will always haunt me

I know it is best to keep my urges at rest
To pry at the lock would only be futile
I may have the sharp stick
To tempt myself with
But it’s use would only be cruel.

This was something I just jotted down a few days ago while sitting at my desk. It doesn't have a title...Yet!
It may not be the best poetry, but I just thought I would share it and I hope you enjoy it!

Poetry's great.  It is very interesting to connect poetry with unrelated topics.

When I was in college, my Junior Seminar thesis was looking at Roman politics through the works of Roman poets (Catullus, Horace, and Vergil specifically).  Some people in class though it was odd, but it's really interesting to see the comparisons.  For instance, Catullus openly criticized Julius Caesar's wars and policies with some of his Carmina.  At the other end of the spectrum, Vergil was basically Augustus' court poet, praising him and bolstering his political agendas and policies in his poems, his Aeneid especially.  Horace also bolstered Augustus' agendas.  Horace's patron was Maecenas, who was Augustus' representative in charge of civil matters.  This put Horace in a close position to Augustus and his court.

I really like poetry, and tried to write some when I was younger.  I think I'm better suited to analyze and appreciate poetry though, rather than writing it.  Mine always came across as stilted.

Anyway, nice work Candy.  It's nice to know that people still write poetry, aside from a few musty scholars.  It's definitely a dying art.

I'll show you politics in America. Here it is, right here. "I think the puppet on the right shares my beliefs."
"I think the puppet on the left is more to my liking."
"Hey, wait a minute, there's one guy holding out both puppets!"
"Shut up! Go back to bed, America. Your government is in control."-BH

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.
Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

Go for it Hero. Maybe make a catch-all language thread.

People could use it to post their poems, short stories, literary analyses, etc.  I love language, and several people in this thread have said they like language and / or poetry. I know I'll support this because I think linguistic arts are a dying art form.  Not enough people practice it or even care.

If I could have had a third major in college, I'd have been an English major. The way it is I chose Classics and History.
