Post by: clinton on November 05, 2015, 12:24:45 PM
TORONTO — Two Richmond Hill, Ont., men were arrested and charged after York Regional Police intercepted and seized an international package containing 1.8 kilograms of opium.

Police said they were alerted about the courier package which was in transit to a Richmond Hill home from Heathrow Airport in London. A drug team tracked the package, which police said originated from Iran, to its final destination and arrested 52-year-old Hoshang Dejdar.

Dejdar was charged with importing a controlled substance, conspiracy to import a controlled substance, possession for the purpose of trafficking opium and trafficking opium.

Police returned to the house after Dejdar’s arrest with a search warrant and also arrested 19-year-old Alex Powiera after marijuana was allegedly found inside the residence. Powiera was charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a controlled substance.

Dejdar will remain in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 14. Powiera was released from police custody and will appear in court on Nov. 6.

I wonder how many of these packages make it through and how many people this was meant to supply? Just this dude or a whole little expat community?

Exactly my thoughts at the time of reading this. Also, what methods were used to trace this, or have known?
Was it simply because of the originating country and persons name? Ugh...

they probably had corresponded by mail plenty of times, but never a package of this size before.

I didn't realize Canada was like the US in terms of ridiculous redundant drug charges.  How the fuck can someone be charged with both importing a controlled substance AND conspiracy to import a controlled substance?!  Its basically saying "They did the thing, and they also talked about doing the thing."  Would they avoid the conspiracy charge if they communicated telepathically instead, or maybe if they just found themselves one day spontaneously importing 1.8 kilos of opium (maybe if they were sleepwalking at the time)?

Or possession for the purpose of trafficking opium AND trafficking opium?  I'm pretty sure you have to have it in order to traffic it.

Fucking christ.
