Title: Chipper goes deep into the underground gay "bear" scene

occasionally I get to be the DJ's guest for (gay) both private and public parties ... this was private and invitation only, except I don't have to pay.

I see it as an honour considering that I'm not gay and an the only straight guy there !

this is the second time I have explored the private world of the gay "bears" scene (sub-subculture) -- what a great bunch of people; so friendly and fun !

the music was sensational if you like that sort of thing. a real party. DJ's mixing up a storm with intelligent lighting/lasers.

lots of illicit drug takers there (no opiates though) - I did my research: MDMA, MDA and GBL to party (and crystal for sex/recreation), from who I talked to. just a bunch of mature and responsible users.

this crowd stands alone in terms of friendliness with no pretence.

despite being a DJ set, the music was well mixed and remixed. these guys come as close to a "live" performance as possible.

I do my best to get the crowd up and dancing !

I know it's not a scene that almost everyone here is into but I just felt the need to share my drugged social and musical experience.

i used a small dose of crystal Meth and a high dose of Phenibut with alcohol -- it's all I can access right now and it's not appropriate to bother the patrons to help me score ... got to be on my best behaviour !

the music, for me anyway, was exactly what I needed ... the crowd was typically big, occasionally fat, old, hairy and proud ! -- hey, we can't be all young, slim and handsome/pretty, right ? they dress down or go with leather. beards are predominant.

yeah, they have their own genre of dance music - minimal charting material and downright groovy -- not just the phrased 4/4 (looped 4-8 and regular 16, 32 and 64 beat patterns) at about 124-128 bpm but off-beat tracks to fuck you up and test your body's ability to resync. ... synth and vocals are overlaid, fit exactly into the particular beat pattens (even if there is no beat) and are borrowed from other tracks from more than one other source, often simultaneously .. it's complicated and every bit a musical art form.

that's what it's about and it takes a lot effort to work the crowd - the busy DJ takes you on a journey within each track and from track to track.

i'm a music nut but know nothing about any electronica, never been to a rave etc...  but i do have a good gay bar story & i guess it'd fit in here ok.  i lived in vegas & drank at the double down saloon, a dive bar located on the "fruit loop" -a curved street where all the gay bars were.  occasionally i'd go over to one's separate food section for pizza or a burger but other than that i never ventured in.  coke & whatever else were essier to buy than a drink at the double down but one night there was nothing & the girl i was with said she knew so off we went.  we paid a cover but she was buying the coke so whatever.  i didn;t even realize it was a gay bar until we were inside, i was drunk. 
 
i did realize once we were inside & asked the girl what the plan was.  apparently it was me getting friendly with someone to find out the low down.  seriously, she took me drunk as hell to a culture i know nothing about and said score us some cocaine.  i did, she bought & it was some of the best I've ever snorted (was before my needle days).

that's fucking funny ... you have a knack of hunting down amusing videos.

funnily enough, some of the guys in your video look a bit like some of the guys in the crowd last night.

yeah, she was right because I've found many excellent drugs in the gay club scene but I do not want to look there for them anymore; it's about the music, the lighting, dancing and the vibe now so I leave the boys alone.

"... I wanna take you to a gay bar ..."  :P :)

Great pics and it sounds like a fantastic party (and music! ) There seems to be a fairly large and thriving bear community locally and I've had nothing but good experiences with them over the years. A couple of my friends are bears, my hairdresser is a bear & we have a bear-den or bearcave (forget the exact term- bear social club?) that gets together and does cool things for charities in the area. Good dudes.

Sweeeeet! I went to a pretty much all gay male party in South Beach FL with my friends girlfriend since he passed out much earlier and honestly it was a blast. The guy who had the flat had a lotttt of money and it showed.

Still talk to two of them on Facebook and glad I got to get out of my comfort zone for once!

Badass! Ive been to a bunch of raves, mostly in Detroit, but a few in Florida too. The scene where i live now is way underground compared to detroit, you have to go with someone who knows first here in my part of fl. Once introduced like that you can pick up all the flyers for the next ones coming up.
Chipper, looks like a great time, what an honor for you to dj there.

no, no, I did not DJ there - I'm a musical friend of the DJ and I only dance. But an honour, indeed.

I try to get them up dancing by being enthusiastic.

I wish I did DJ there but I don't have that skill - it's only the bedroom for me.

Oh ok, so you were there contributing to the life of the party. If you dj or produce music i hope you at least put it up on soundcloud. My husbands always working on tracks no one but me will even hear, and some of them are def good enough to be played at parties. Seems like a waste. But an honor for you to be invited in any capacity id say.

I do have some material on SoundCloud but it's mainly another DJ buddy that I recorded live and some other tracks that I borrowed from real DJs in the gay scene.

I use Mixcloud for my own stuff and this site even has some personal cloud space where I have uploaded my mashups.

I'm just drawn to the slower, groovier and hypnotic beats that scene delivers.
