"Human" new documentary
« on: October 11, 2015, 10:47:27 PM »

“To succeed in your professional life isn’t that hard, but to succeed in your personal life is a lot harder. To really be a human is a lot harder. We forget about that.” – Yann Arthus-Bertand, director of the film Human

Sometimes there comes along a documentary that is so profound, so moving, that you want to shout out to the whole world that they must see it.

Just-released Human is one of those unforgettable documentaries that has the power to change an enormous amount of people. It may even have the ability to change how governments treat their citizens.

Directed by French born Yann Arthus-Bertand, a well-known and incredible photographer, journalist, and reporter (as well as an avid environmentalist), Human is a stunning visual feast for the eyes and has a powerful impact on the soul.

Arthus, who is also known for directing another equally stunning documentary, Home (which was viewed by a whopping 600 million people), is back with another masterpiece that showcases something that has never been done before.

Synopsis

Throughout the filming of Human, Arthus and his team of 16 journalists interviewed 2020 people from 60 different countries, asking each person the same 40 questions, covering many subjects such as family, love, religion, ambition, and failure.

They asked questions like:

“What is the toughest trial you have faced? What did you learn from it?”

“When was the last time you said ‘I love you’ to your parents?” and “What is love to you?”

“What are your thoughts on homosexuality, the destruction of the environment and the cost of war?”

“What was it like growing up in your country?”

“Why is humanity making the same mistakes?”

The answers often surprised the journalists and frequently took the conversation to unexpected places.

They even interviewed freedom fighters, death row inmates, farmers in Mali, and war veterans who have seen life in a very different context than have most of us.

Countless Moving Moments

Of the countless moving moments in the film, I personally found the scene right at the beginning to be the most touching. Leonard — a man who is in prison in the US for murdering a woman and her child — speaks of his abusive childhood and how his father would often beat him and say things like, “I did this because I love you,” and “This hurts me more than it hurts you.”

Leonard grew up, not surprisingly, with hate in his heart – and a very warped idea of what ‘love’ is. He then ended up committing this truly horrific act.

He was sentenced to prison and strangely, only discovered what ‘love’ meant after he came across a woman named Agnes who forgave him for what he did. And she was the mother and grandmother of the two victims.

This is what Leonard said:

“By all rights, she should hate me, but instead, she gave me love, and she taught me what it was.”

The variety of people interviewed, from so many different countries, shows you the scale of the world’s common concerns, yet also gives you inspiration that the majority of people want the same things — to live in peace and harmony with each other, for governments to treat us well, and to have that connectedness that is so important. The film also showcases just how hard some people have it in this world and makes you appreciate your own life much more.

The movie also shows some of the most beautiful moving images of our earth, deserts, mountains, and landscapes, all alongside a stunning soundtrack.

I promise you, you won’t be the same after you watch this film!

NICE-I love doc's like this-there is also another really IMPORTANT one coming called MISSING 411-if you have not read the books(David Paulides), look at the trailer on you tube-it will blow your mind-this story!!

Its about something that is and has been going on in our national parks, and cannot be explained.  Hundreds of people are disappearing-with no logical explanation.

Yes I saw the trailer for missing 411, about a month ago and wasn't sure if got off the ground, has the film been completed?

Human really has so many different perspectives and so many moving moments I cried about 4 times in the first volume.

The old woman from I think Philippines who killed her husband broke my heart, same with the Lebanese lady who's husband stabbed her.
The man from Senegal who talks about his siblings dying from poverty... Fuggetaboutit...I was balling.

I wish  the lady from India who started screaming for world leaders to do something is heard, her words were blunt and truthful. It's so sad. But at the same time I find such beauty in everyone of these humans :)

You shouldn’t agree with me more, but after far too much time studying geopolitics for the asinine reason that the ISIL [daesh} ; there is too much money, many of tom backing both Us and the ISIL, It serves both interests.
And if Russia wants a piece of this, I don’t agree it, but does damage them any buys them a seat at the table virtualizing an Alawite where he keeps his Warm water ports at Tartarus and Jakarta.

I don’t think Putin operated on this grand scheme. He’s a tactation. He has trained by the KBG to be a
tactation and he still is today. He saw an opportunity in the Donbas (Ukraine) and he took it. He saw an opportunity on Syria. There’s a couple more  but I’ll stay here

Madeleine Abright: the Russian are playing chess we are playing ,monopoly

Sorry St T. That I turned your thread into a Putin rant.

I watched the first episode and half of the second. Good shit, St. T. Def had me on the verge of tears a couple times.
Why can't we change things? I can relate with the whole poverty thing going on there. Except being poor in the USA is a completely different animal than being poor in Africa, Asia, or the Middle East. So much help out there, but not quite enough. Those with families who can afford to subsidize their poor relatives (like myself) live much better than others, despite having NO cash at any given moment. Like myself - I have 37 cents cash right now.

Money is a total bitch... I used to think different when I had plenty before I got arrested and put in prison for a few years, but the old saying, "a democrat is a republican who's been arrested," and "a republican is a democrat who's been mugged," holds true, even though I still lean conservative and vote my conscience (total libertarian).

It's fucked up when you think of how we as heroin addicts say, if only we had access to our drug we would be as productive as other members of society...and then that women from India is saying the same exact thing but what she wants is food.

oh and just wait till the doc gets into war and the taking of another mans life....the tears will roll.

Rant on, yo...
Well if you’ll let me rant; on March 1st I emailed Dear Dr. Cohen, I never expected a reply.
For those know  don’t know Dr. Cohen, is on the Council on Foreign Relations, a close friend with Gorbachev, and since 1998, Cohen has been professor of Russian Studies and History at New York University.
This is what I wrote and he wrote me minus the email addresses.

Dear Dr. Cohen,
I hope you will forgive me; I am not one of your students. I have been
reading your writings lately and wanted to reach out to you. I first
saw your position while on MSNBC and was surprised that someone was
actually making sense about this issue and not attempting to sell the
extremist line against Russia that you hear everywhere else in the
mainstream American press. It was also the first time I saw someone
describe an actual solution to this, a federalized Ukraine, and this
was before thousands had to die in Donbas. It's been a shame I haven't
seen you invited back. Now the only place I see you given a platform
to make your position is on Zakarias show on CNN, and I give them a
lot of credit for that. I find it shameful that it's very difficult to
find anyone of intelligence on this issue being given a platform in
the mainstream media in the US anymore. I don't use the term
mainstream media in the context you hear on Fox News, but in the true
sense of the phrase encompassing all main media outlets in the United
States.

This is a massive failure of policy, and a failure of diplomacy that's
resulted in what I think is possibly the most dangerous situation
happening in the world right now. We''re close to war right now as
astonishing as that is to say, and you never hear that considered. If
the only two narratives you ever hear are one that this is all the
fault of Russia and the US is blameless in all counts, or that this is
just Putin protecting ethnic Russians and everything Putin is doing is
rooted in humanitarian assistance you lose the gray area in the
middle where the truth lies. And all the while we have a humanitarian
catastrophe.

This is a humanitarian crisis of enormous magnitude. Five thousand
dead. 1 million displaced. The government in Kiev isn’t paying any
pensions anymore for anyone in the Donbas. Even if they did there are
women, children, and the elderly trapped with minimal infrastructural
support. The weather is cold, and harsh. Where is the right to protect
civilians come in that the US always preaches about in the Middle
East?

This is sad. This is incredibly dangerous. We're getting locked into a
new cold war that's much more dangerous than the last one since the
focal point of this cold war is right on Russia's border as opposed to
the last one which had its focal point on Berlin. If the central
government in Kiev falls, which isn't an impossibility today; it could
be replaced by even more extremist elements in the governing
coalition. If that happens Russia will move into the eastern provinces
to protect the people left, and deal with the already existing
humanitarian situation. It's not hard to imagine a situation under
those circumstances where NATO could move troops into western Ukraine
through Poland, and we have the Cuban missile crisis as you have aptly
equated this too. A far more dangerous one then we experienced in
1962, and one I don't see a way out of. Washington feels it's
infallible, and Putin sees it as existential for Russia, and his own
personal legacy.

And the damn of this is if we ever get to the point of having a deal,
the deal will look more or less like the same deal proposed over a
year ago before everything started spiraling out of control. If this
ends without an even larger war it will be because Ukraine ended up as
a federated state. If historians have the opportunity to will look
back on this in the future, it will be seen as a massive failure of
diplomacy that caused a massive humanitarian crisis, and the threat of
a ground war in Europe. Sadly we don't seem to have any statesman who
will sit down and negotiate a way out of this.

Dr. Cohen how do you see this ending? If this is a Cuban Missile
Crisis like scenario, who blinks? I want you to know there are young
men like myself who are paying attention to this. There are people
like myself who are looking for the real facts going on. I also wanted
to ask where you get your news about this. I would be delighted to
hear your response to anything I've written to you about.

With my deepest respects,
Tom Harvey

to me

Dear Tom Harvey,

Many thanks for your thoughts. I agree, of course. The best chance to end the UKR crisis
through diplomacy/negotiations is Minsk II, the alternative being war with Russia perhaps.
War factions in several capitals, esp. DC and Kiev, have been trying to undermine this
diplomatic initiative by Merkel and Hollande, but it seemed the Minsk conditions were being
slowly implemented on the ground in E. URK.  The killing of Nemtsov will now be used by
the war factions to claim no deal with Putin is permissible. I am currently in Western Europe
headed for Moscow in a few days, and therefore not sure what is being said in the  US press
or on the Sunday talk shows, but I am guess the talk asserts Putin's guilt or complicity.

As for me, I am, it seems, effectively blacklisted at MSNBC, where I have not been invited
for many months. Apart from the Zakaria show (very occasionally) the same seems to be
the case at CNN and the other mainstream outlets. I still have my Tuesday evening broadcast
on the John Batchelor Show on ABC radio, occasionally Democracy Now and Thom Hatmann
radio, but that's about it.

Again, thanks for sharing your thoughts, wise ones, I think. All Best, Stephen Cohen
