The answer:
It's taking PC to a whole nother level.
The idea of using "gender" instead of "sex" has always miffed me a bit. I can understand on a site like this where there are all kinds of freaks and weirdos where you'd want to have "gender" instead of "sex," but it's used most of the time inappropriately. Let's be biologically accurate, folks. "Gender" indicates grammatically more of a state of mind rather than a biological condition.
What gender are you? as opposed to what sex are you?
I can completely understand a man identifying with the female sex more so than maleness, but c'mon people, tell it like it is. Do you have a penis or not?

As far as products go, unless they're specifically and only for a one gender/sex (ie sexual/genital health products) I don't see the point in gendering them. It really serves no purpose for adults, other than to charge more or be able to sell more (like buying different disposable razors, or charging more for women's vitamins even though they're identical to the normal ones). I'm especially against it when it comes to toys and children's products, all it does is instill and enforce ridiculously arbitrary and potentially damaging stereotypes about what it is to be or like as a boy or a girl (or neither).
As far as gender and sex being interchangeable, they're technically different, but I don't see how using gender to describe how one identifies is inappropriate. Unless we're speaking specifically in a medical context, I don't see a problem with allowing people to define themselves by gender rather than sex. Again, outside of a medical, I don't understand why it's anyone's business what a person has between their legs. Also, unless you would describe your relationship with your own gender/sex as a 'state of mind', it's not really fair to say that of someone who identifies as a gender that's different than their biological sex. That's like calling homosexuality a 'lifestyle'.
There was a pretty interesting documentary that came out recently about Genesis P. Orridge called 'The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jay', it's worth checking out. I don't know that I would consider Genesis a trans person in the traditional sense, I got the impression that it was more of an art project (though I could be wrong).

I bet that this is more about saving target money. No sense making two gender divided shampoos when they can make one with neutral smells. Less stock chain, overhead Costs, production costs, space cost etc...
