The Knick, Season 2 (Oct. 16)
« on: October 01, 2015, 07:51:47 AM »
40mgtoFreedom (aka King Shitz) turned me onto this show last year
it is soooooooooooo fucking great

it is about a surgeon at the Knickerbocker Hospital in New York, at the turn of the 20th century
his hobbies include shooting cocaine, smoking opium, chinese prostitutes, and surgical innovation
a direct quote for the skeptical "We need cocaine. We need cocaine to exist."
also, some of the most accurate depictions of addiction, withdrawal, life as a user in general
AND THE SOUNDTRACK! Sci-fi spaced out goodness

the last scene of the first season, well, lets just say
its going to be a lote more relevant to our types

here is the season two trailer

you can watch season 1 online here

I agree; it's so good!      I didn't expect it to be at first but it was pretty good right away and just got better and better.  The female lead (one of the leads) is Bono's daughter; She was so good too.. her name is Eve Hewson.

Really ended season one w/a cliffhanger.   Can't wait for season 2

This show is the fucking shit. My wife and I love it. My folks got us onto this one and HBOGO had it for a limited time all for free via streaming. I love the historical references as old school medical and pharmaceutical stuff is cool to learn about. And having worked as a surgical tech, it is really badass to see the developing era of medicine at that time as well as the (comparatively speaking) rudimentary knowledge regarding certain techniques we now consider very basic and simple today.

But fuck how he treated the Jewish surgeon who is better than him at all things surgical. Although we all know that guy can't get a nurse to shoot cocaine liquid into his cock then later let him douse her clit with it prior to sexing her up. That took some unique badassery for sure.

So - aside from "free" sites where one might find The Knick, it's legit on Cinemax, right?

We didn't re-up for Cinemax (xtra $15 on top of already-pay-too-much-for-all-that-shit) when we changed providers this year, although we do have HBO and Showtime and all the web-enabled stuff (HBO Go, etc.)  that comes with it.    I forgot about the Knick and I don't think we watch anything else on Cinemax.

Does anyone know:

Is it just season one that's up on HBO GO now in order to entice people for season two and then it switches back to Cinemax?   Or will season two be on HBO Go for some reason?

Yeah will be a must-watch for me.

I am looking forward to how they depict his addiction to heroin, after being given that drug in the cocaine detox that he went to.

man i almost forgot about that king shit i took

so yeah the first episode of season 2 was great, but really they all are,  sometimes the gore is right on the line for TOO MUCH for me, for some reason i cant stomach real life surgery footage, but zombies with rotting flesh getting blown up is just fine, i guess its all in the context....

not that i want it toned down at all,  i think this show is probably the greatest show about addiction, medicine, early 1900s that has ever been... i just have to briefly look away sometimes.

Season 2 was too long in coming but with Sodenburgh directing the show it's gotta be good. This is looking to knock a few of my old faves off the podium if they keep thislevel of quality  up. Old Thack...didn't take him long to discover the golden standard in speed ballery.

I too was into this show from the start. Like most of us (I bet) I wish I had lived in that time, at least until 1914.

One this that gives me hope for season 2 and onward is that it all pr-dates AA/NA and they can't just resort to the trope that Thack "goes to meetings" and from then on is "just fine."  The first episode of the second season has him (forcibly) on a sailboat out of sight of land in the Atlantic with a collegue has him learning sailing knots with the bargain that when he learns 10 they can head back, so Thack throws himself into learning the 10 as fast as he can. At the end he has a sort of epiphany that says "Maybe if I treat it as disease rather than a craving I can cure myself..."

Another hope is that because his over-the-top addiction is so essential to his character and he is undoubtedly at the top of his field and can therefore rationlaize anything h wants that the drug use will continue to be a major part of his story arc.

What I didn't understand is why the nurse, "Miss Elkins" is now disgraced. They didn't bust her stealing coke from the German hospital (she escaped) and as far as I know, nobidy knows about her fving the Chinese opioum dealer a "Golden Lotus" for $100 and 10g of opium or the coke and sex play with Tackery. SOowhy is she disgraced? I must have missed something unless it is just simple guilt by association with Thackery.
