i have some friends that simply abhor the term "junky" but i also use it as a term of endearment amongst users.

so what do you think ?

is being called a "junky" a bad thing ?

I like to think that I've taken back the word, like homosexuals have done with the "f word" and African Americans have done with the "n word". I think of myself as a junky and I love myself!

To me, it means someone who shoots dope. The rest is details. I do what I need to do to stay well, which means go to work. Other people do other things.

I think to be a junkie (should be spelled with "ie" at the end, not "y", btw imho), one must primarily be about opiates - "junk" in other words - but can be a poly drug abuser/user/addict, like myself. I consider myself a nominal junkie. But a tweaker, who solely uses meth, is a tweaker, not a junkie. A crackhead is a crackhead, an alky is an alky, and so on. A junkie's DOC is opiates, although he may enjoy and use a wide range of substances. I sometimes use the term "garbagehead" to describe a user like myself too.

I don't see anything derogatory about it, really. Just means someone who is physically dependent on opiates, or who has been in the past, and who might be chipping currently.

as for spelling I prefer junky, because simplicity, because its the spelling burroughs preferred and because mozilla doesnt think its a word.

whether or not its "bad" still depends a lot on intent and context, in addition to whatever preconceived feelings someone has to the word.

But I think junky as a "term of endearment" is far less popular among the older crowd. the younger the group, the less likely they are to think twice about it, IMO

Huh, good point, I hadn't thought about it but that's been my experience as well.  I think that through the 80s, there really was a lot of straight contempt directed at "junkies," with being dirty and worthless just implicit in the term.  I've met older guys who inject heroin intravenously several times a day and have done so for decades, but are still genuinely offended if anyone includes them in the "junky" category, since they aren't dirty or disheveled.

Whereas, since the 90s you have people saying things like "I'm a Diet Coke junky lol!" at work, reducing the stigma associated with the word itself.  And at the same time, the anti-drug rhetoric has mutated from straight castigating to the Dr. Drew-style nonsense we're all familiar with.

I agree with junky but what about for plural? Do you go junkys or junkies? I think junkies looks more "right"...

I've never minded the word (either being called one or how to spell it), but I can see how it could cause offence.

I only find it offensive when people who aren't addicts say it, if someone else who uses calls me a junkie that is normal and when I use it I don't consider it a bad or offensive thing to say. I think when non-addicts use it they mean someone who uses dope and doesn't do anything else like doesn't work and is a deadbeat and is willing to do anything to get it. Kind of like when people call someone a bum they mean he doesn't work or do anything as opposed to just saying he is homeless.
