Fruit Tingle acid trip amongst 92 Splendour drug seizures

Fruit Tingles soaked in acid was amongst half a kilo of illicit drugs seized by police over the weekend at the Splendour on the Grass music festival held at North Byron Parklands.

Ninety-two people were charged with drug related offences at the four-day music festival which kicked off last Thursday and saw about 30,000 revelers through the gates.

Police issued 75 cannabis cautions and seized about half a kilo of illicit substances, including an LSD soaked Fruit Tingle lolly.

Tweed Byron Local Area Commander, Acting Superintendent Gary Cowan, said police had intercepted more drug suppliers this year compared to last.

"Drug offences for supplying drugs was up, which is a real concern to police because drugs like LSD and MDMA were brought in large quantities," Supt Cowan said.

"People tried to (disguise) them them in different part of their bodies. They tried to (disguise) them in cars and car engines.

"Some person tried to soak a Fruit Tingle in LSD," he said.

The LSD was concealed in a man's wallet and wrapped in foil when it was detected by a drug dog.

The sudden popularity of acid at the music festival was concerning to police, with another man found to be carrying around 398 LSD 'tabs'.

"It can be a festival where you have your pills and your cannabis, but for this festival to have drugs like LSD, which is a hallucinating drug, is a major concern," Supt Cowan said.

Det Ins Gary Cowan: Tweed Byron Local Area Command Police's Det Ins Gary Cowan talks about drugs seized at Splendour on the Grass 2015.

Paramedics and doctors treated a number of patients for a range of injuries. Alcohol and drugs played a significant role in many of these incidents.

One man fell out of a tree and was taken to hospital.

But, overall, police have praised festival-goers for their good behaviour.

"There's always people who are going to play up but the large amount of people really enjoyed themselves.

"We are pleased the overwhelming majority of revelers were well-behaved all weekend," Supt Cowan said.

Police worked closely with Splendour organisers to ensure festival-goers were safe, including the 17,500 patrons who camped on-site.

Notable arrests:

- On Thursday, 23 July: A police drug dog detected seven MDMA tablets, 3.4 grams of cannabis and 53 capsules containing magic mushrooms from a vehicle. A 19-year-old man who was seated in the car was arrested. He will be charged in the coming weeks.

- On Friday, 24 July: A 21-year-old woman was arrested after police found her to be in possession of 123 tablets of MDMA and a bag of cocaine. She was charged with drug supply offences, before being granted conditional bail to appear at Byron Bay Local Court on 11 September 2015.

- A 19-year-old man was arrested with what police believe to be 92 MDMA tablets, 26 LSD tabs and 35 grams of cannabis. The man was charged with drug supply offences and will appear at Byron Bay Local Court on 11 September 2015.

- On Sunday, 26 July: two 18-year-old men were stopped and searched at the front gates of the festival. Police allegedly located a tin with 398 cardboard squares in plastic bags, believed to be LSD tabs.

Police from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command launched a five-day high-visibility policing operation from Wednesday.

They were assisted by officers from across Northern Region, the Dog Unit, Public Order and Riot Squad, Operations Support Group, Mounted Unit, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and Police Transport Command.

It's funny to me that they're so surprised about the LSD.  Really?  A music festival?  Acid?  Gee, who'd have thought of that!   ::)

Plus, they're so concerned about it.  It said they're okay with pills and weed, but not LSD.  I personally don't think acid is any worse than E.  Definitely not as bad as coke.

LSD usage is very rare these days in Oz - I think that's why they are surprised.

Here, have a tingle, a really fruity one :)
