Horror pictures show what happens when heroin addicts abuse drugs on your doorstep

With dirty needles littering the hallways of some homes, concerned parents are speaking out.

These are the worrying images which reveal what it is like for families to live with heroin addicts abusing the drug on their doorstep.

Mortified neighbours of a Cork city centre apartment block are taking a stand after noticing blood-stained drug paraphernalia such as syringes and other items being left outside their homes.

The residents of Pope’s Quay Court claim the addicts are accessing their apartment block through a door that has been left ajar for the clients of two sex workers living there, the Irish Mirror reports.

Choices Property Management, the agent of the building’s management company last night said that they are working with the HSE and the Garda to solve the problem but insisted it is city wide.

This drug issue was first highlighted by an anonymous email sent to the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork’s RedFm.

The message, which was written by a male resident, read: “Myself and my two flatmates have come across a number of junkies shooting up heroin in our apartment block.

“Some days when we would be leaving the house, we’d come across syringes and bloody cotton buds scattered all over the stairwell and in the evenings or at night time, we’d often find two or three people shooting up at the bottom of the stairs.

“My flatmate was even physically threatened by these people on one or two occasions, while asking them to leave.

“To make matters worse, there are many families here trying to raise their young children.

"How long before a child has a run-in with one of these people?”

A female resident at the Northside complex told of one terrifying experience last year.

She told listeners the photos are an accurate representation of what she would have seen most days.

The resident added: “I would have seen that alright, that would have been a daily thing.

“It wasn’t in our letter box but you definitely have to step over everything…”

The woman said that while the complex’s communal areas are cleaned up eventually, more needles turn up a few hours or days later.

Last night Cormac Aherne, a spokesman for Choices Property Management, said they have attempted to tackle the problem at the complex but the main issue was the increase in drug use in wider society.

He added: “Personally, it’s something that I have come across more so certainly over the last two or three years in and around the city. It is becoming a bigger problem.”

“We have been speaking to the managing company to see how the security can be increased at the complex and throughout the city.”

Mr Aherne explained how most management companies now issue fobs to their residents instead of codes for electric gates in the hope of preventing strangers from getting into the building.

However, this has not completely eradicated the problem.

He added: “We have spoken to the HSE, to TDs and senators on behalf of the management companies to see if methadone clinics can be moved from the city centre [but] it isn’t likely to happen soon.”

Mr Aherne added bringing addicts by bus to centres out of the city would also be “just kicking the problem down the road”.

He said: “It’s not an issue that is just happening in one or two apartment complexes, it’s becoming widespread.

“We do get phone calls about residents coming across people with needles.

“We as the managing agent would talk to the directors of the management company and to the gardai.

“The gardai would evict the people but that’s a short-term solution. It’s potentially only a day or two away from them getting back in and causing more damage.

“What we need is to find a solution together with the council, the HSE and gardai.”

Mr Aherne added his firm has hired a cleaning company every time an incident of heroin abuse has been reported to them. But he pointed out that cleaning up the needles was only a “short-term solution”.

Choices Property Management said the claims by the residents regarding sex workers had been reported to gardai and were being investigated.

Councillor Thomas Gould said there has been “an ongoing issue across the whole city” with needles left in parks, and other public areas.

The Sinn Fein man said: “This can happen anywhere. It just shows how much drug usage is going on, and it’s no longer an issue that affecting just one social class. We need a solution.

“And as a party, we think it should be a combination more resources for gardai and more centres for drug addicts.

“This would allow them to be in a safe environment while being away from families.

“It would also ensure that they know it’s not acceptable for them to be doing this in the street or in buildings.

“It’s really terrible for children who are living in those apartments to see drug use or its aftermath”

Mr Gould pointed out that many small lanes in Cork city centre have been gated off to prevent drug addicts from shooting up in the street.

That move only seems to have moved the problem to nearby buildings.

He added: “Drugs task forces and people working with drugs addicts have had suffered huge cutbacks.

“And the Government tends to prioritise Dublin because of the number of people living there but it’s happening in every city in Ireland.

“It’s a plague for families and communities around the country”

I don't mind letting people make their own choices regarding drug use, but I do think these types of addicts are in the wrong.  Shoot up somewhere else.  If you're an addict, be a righteous drug addict.  Don't let YOUR use jeopardize OTHER people.

Those places need more funding for clinics, HR, safe shooting places, etc.

and after all, it just often trashes the good work that many of us do.

gives us a bad name. some people have no pride.

I hate dirty addicts that make their mess other people's problems.

it also reeks of bad HR, both for the users and the general public ... a Medically Supervised Injecting Room wouldn't go amiss.

... and some love too.
