SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Do not touch fentanyl without gloves.

That's the warning six people suspected of running a fentanyl processing mill in Clay gave investigators who raided a suburban home where they were packaging drugs Wednesday, said Onondaga County Sheriff Gene Conway.

"It was the suspects themselves that, when the investigators entered the residence, that actually cautioned the investigators," Conway said Friday morning during a news conference.

That's how dangerous fentanyl is, he said.

Though it has the same effect as heroin, the drug can be up to 50 times more powerful than heroin – putting users at an even higher risk of death. It can be absorbed through the skin and can be lethal in small doses, Sgt. Jeremy Young said.

Conway and Young warned of the danger posed by fentanyl after the department made what they called the biggest fentanyl bust in the county's history. The six drug trafficking suspects were arrested after detectives searched 7793 New Hope Drive West and found nearly 6,000 doses of fentanyl valued at about $60,000.

Fentanyl has made the heroin epidemic plaguing the country -- and county -- more deadly, authorities said.In 2016, fentanyl and heroin contributed to the overdose deaths of 11 people in Onondaga County. Conway did not have updated figures for 2016.

Drug dealers have started slipping fentanyl into the bags of heroin sold to addicts to cut costs and increase the potency of their product.

Some heroin addicts have no idea they are using fentanyl, Young said. Others who recognize the strength of the drug are starting to specifically seek out fentanyl instead of heroin, he said.

Conway said the bust illustrates how fentanyl, like heroin, is wreaking havoc on the county.

"This is in our neighborhoods, this is in our schools, this is in our jails," Conway said. "It's everywhere."

The home raided was on a quiet suburban street in a development located in the suburbs near the North Area YMCA and not far from Morgan Road Elementary and Liverpool High School.

Inside, detectives found 47.7 grams of fentanyl and about 2 ounces of bath salts, Conway said.

A loaded 12-gauge shotgun was found in the home near where the six suspects were packaging fentanyl for sale, Conway said. A replica of a submachine gun was also found, he said.

Nearly $4,000 worth of cash was seized from the residence. Hypodermic needles, colorful paper packaging and cutting agents like powdered caffeine were also found.

Like heroin, fentanyl will not be disappearing from the community anytime soon, Young said.

Conway said he considers heroin and fentanyl among the biggest issues Onondaga County -- along with communities across the nation -- are facing. That's why he hopes to capture the attention of people by talking about the arrest of the six people selling fentanyl, he said.

"How do we put into the minds of the six people that they're basically selling poison?" Conway asked. "To make a few dollars, they're potentially giving people a death sentence."

OMG, the gun was LOADED?! Those people are too dangerous to be free. I'm glad they are were they belong now - behind bars.

And what the fuck does "along with two ounces of bath salts" mean? Actual bath salts?
