I love watching that Finding Your Roots show with Henry Louis Gates. the records he finds are absolutely incredible.

and just about everyone he researches has a slave owner, a slave, and or inbreeding within that last few generations. its extremely common.

@neighbor I totally forgot about that show, I remember when it came out that Ben Affleck had family members in the slave trade and they put it all over the news of course. I never watched the show though. Speaking of slaves I just found this article yesterday on the Irish slave trade (yes that was a thing) and it was a lot worse then I thought. I'm only 1/4 Italian but that's the extended family I grew up with & definitely the funnest/most compelling of the mix.  My great-grandmother (Mama Lou to us) was the largest personality you've ever met and just large in general.  My folks have a picture of her circa prohibition with a bottle of home-made wine in each hand and a seriously large cigar in her mouth, she's at least 400lbs in the picture.  She's the only great grandparent I met, she outlived all my grandparents save her daughter.  I have very vivid memories of her when I was young, then a long period living across the country, then I got to spend about two years in close contact with her while she slowly lost her memory.  I pried her endlessly for stories and found out something interesting (if true) to complete a mystery about a story I'd heard a hundred times from others.

  The story known:  She came through Ellis Island from Italy at age 3 with her mother and father.  She went to elementary school briefly but was needed at their home/hotel (they rented rooms for income, not sure what to call it) and basically worked for her parents until they arranged her marriage, here in the u.s, at 13.  She had 3 children by age 17 and the guy beat her endlessly.  At 18 she took off across the country with the kids with nothing, knowing nobody anywhere, landed in Minnesota.  A year or so later a friend knocked on her door in the middle of the night saying her husband was in town looking for her.  She split immediately with the kids & this time went back to Italy where they stayed for about another year. He followed.

  She returned to the states with the kids and he remained in Italy.  From that point on, on her & each of her children's birthdays, as well as Christmas, they would get a present in the mail of a gallon of olive oil (his family were olive farmers). She married another full Italian man, known to me via stories only as "Poppy" & by all accounts the polar opposite of the previous asshole, everyone loved him & he them.

  What happened in Italy?  The dinner table conjecturing was that she obviously sought help from the mob.  The details of how it might have transpired were what we always wondered/talked about.  She was 3 when she left, and the family doubted she knew anything about her relatives there. 

  Turns out (my impression from what I could pry from her) that all she knew about Italy was the name of the town she was from.  She went to that town and straight to the town's church.  She told the priest her situation & when her husband showed up the priest "had a talk with him."  From that point on she never had to worry about it again.  I connected the dots & figured Father had the connections she didn't...   who knows, she was stealing the silverware at the the table & calling me by her son's name at that point.  I just feel lucky to have been given a piece of the story firsthand, true or not.

i really take pride in a 4 contributing genetics. i identify the most with my native side because i wa taught the great spirit stories and celebrations. technique catholic but f that shit,.. im agnostic borderline atheist. (some days more than others. i just always get back to you cant get something with from nothing (everything is a part of something welse so i break it down until all thats left is an eternal spririt (cathfrase here), etc. now i know its a straight up matter that is held together by the laws  of physics. (and yes im aware of quantum physics and being able to "time travel" or make a atom  or molecule disappear and pop up in another place. exceptions to the rul thats why im on the fense. i haven't had anyone break it down further than that and convince me with science. now im a dirty hippy Rasta man and believe in mystical powers but a deity? mmmm doubt it. great spirit.
