Do you tell your doctors you smoke weed?
« on: September 09, 2015, 10:38:13 AM »
Do you tell your doctors you smoke weed? When I thought of this I was thinking of your Primary Care Physician but really any dr or er.

Me? Yes. Though of course "it was from use a week or so ago" and frankly compared to what I used to do is barely anything.

I figure in the  ER I'm going to get tested for my thyroid (which is fine btw) and will people see it then. As far as the others, yeah I figure I guess they should know this is at least in the mix.

i tell my doctor everything except shooting Methadone because that's a no-no that will cause grief for me.

I've been contemplating this recently as I am looking for a new general practitioner to see. How honest will I be about my drug use and addiction history? I go back and fourth on it but I think I've decided not to reveal it. I want a clean start with this new insurance company and an admission like that will only contemplate things.

I think your decision is wise, as far as starting out. But if you get into some medical emergency, tell them only about acute use.

I would agree but "addiction history" is large box to fill. My dr's know i've smoked weed recently, they do not know about my past heroin use.

I'd wait another 15 or 20 years before I was too free and easy with that information with any health care provider.

How would that impact your care? Marijuana has basically no ill health consequences (unless you're smoking like an oz. a day or you are schizophrenic), and no drug interactions, except for combination with depressant drugs that can sometimes make you feel like shit, but which is basically common sense.

Electronic medical records are accessible to anyone in the network, and any practitioner can enter data into the record. Once it's in there, it's there forever. Forever.

The main problem
With letting your doc know
Is weed may be legal in your state
There dea licence is federal
So it depends on the doctor
Some are chill
Others well that's a whole nether thread

No way would I feel comfortable disclosing this if I used it. It's not just a question of a current doctor, it's how it could affect future care w/those who may think MJ is a gateway drug to becoming an addict, as well as insurance eligibility, DMV etc etc.  Despite privacy protection laws, far too many can already access my medical records/info--going back for years. Not worth the likely future problems IMO.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.
Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

When I got off opiods I told all my medical practitioners that I was an addict and clean to be sure they didn't fall for any of my tricks. And it's a good idea to inform your Doc what you're up to so he can give you accurate advice, right? That's what I thought all my life. But when I was doing pre-op testing for back surgery, I told them I smoked weed and the fuckers cancelled my operation, pending clearance from an "addiction specialist". It threw me into a depression spiral that lasted 4 months and was nearly the end of me. I'll never be honest with a doctor again. I'll come here and learn everything I need.

i tell my doctors everything so i can get a proper diagnosis and to create an open, honest, informative information flow going.

But i am the one who recommends the drugs i need and not them.

I usually get what i want about 80% of the time, street or legal.

hey, it works for me.

honesty without stupidity blows them away.
