From a Facebook big-bang spat to the story of Life
Participants: Andrew (operator) and Claude Time span: 11:08 AM – 2:43 PM, Sydney Trigger: A Facebook exchange where TC Eleanor called the big bang a "fake fairy tale" because it names no fuel and no trigger, and Barbara Leate replied that "the universe operates like we do".
Key to labels used below:
- Established: mainstream science, with evidence.
- Andrew posits: Andrew's own hypothesis or conjecture.
- Revised: an idea changed during the discussion, with who changed and why.
1. Cosmology
Established
- The big bang theory doesn't describe an explosion of fuel into space. It describes space expanding from a hot, dense state about 13.8 billion years ago.
- It rests on three independent observations: galaxy redshift, the cosmic microwave background (predicted before it was found), and the hydrogen-to-helium ratios.
- The theory says nothing reliable about the very first instant or its trigger. Cosmologists openly list that as unknown. Candidate triggers (inflaton decay, quantum fluctuation, Hartle–Hawking no-boundary, cyclic/bounce, eternal inflation) are all untested.
- Real weak points in the standard model: dark matter, dark energy and inflation haven't been directly detected, and there's the Hubble tension.
- Lemaître, who first proposed the big bang (1927), was a Catholic priest.
Andrew posits — the opposing-energies trigger
- Energy and "anti-energy" travelled in opposite directions for eons in balance. Their paths eventually decayed and they collided. The collision produced light, then chains of mass production, further collisions and compounding formations.
- An imperfection (inequality between the two) made the outcome possible.
- Two founding tenets: (1) nothingness isn't possible; (2) the most fundamental requirement of life is an energy source.
- The universe is alive; everything has an equal negative shadow.
Revised
- "Anti-energy": Claude first called it undefined. Andrew challenged that, and Claude agreed it was too flat, since negative energy does appear in physics (gravitational potential energy, the Casimir effect, zero-total-energy universe models). Remaining requirement: a perfectly equal collision would cancel to nothing, so the two sides must have been unequal, and that remainder is the imperfection.
- Quantum entanglement as the "negative shadow": doesn't fit, since entangled particles are correlated, not opposites, and can't exert force. The closest real principle is matter/antimatter symmetry (CPT) and the possibly zero total energy of the universe.
- Tenet 1 has mainstream support (the quantum vacuum is never empty). Tenet 2 holds for usable energy (gradients). It carries over to the cosmos only if "the universe is alive" is accepted as a premise.
- "Universe is alive": kept as Andrew's starting assumption, not a finding. Related minority positions: panpsychism, Smolin's cosmological natural selection.
- Recycling: real, but stars (supernovae, stellar winds) do most of it, not black holes.
What would make it testable: a consequence that could be checked, such as a pattern in the microwave background, a specific matter–antimatter ratio, or a link between total energy and the size of the imbalance.
2. Sugars, the sugar code and ribose
Established
- Glycans (cell-surface sugar chains) act as an information layer, the "sugar code": blood groups, immune self-recognition, protein folding and quality control (N-glycans), routing (mannose-6-phosphate), white-cell homing, viral entry (sialic acid).
- Glycans aren't templated from a gene. Their "software" is stored indirectly in the glycosyltransferase enzymes that build them. They're the least-decoded of life's messaging systems.
- In cells, the hardware and the software are the same objects: the genetic code is implemented by tRNA synthetases, the ribosome is a ribozyme that runs it, regulatory networks act as control logic, and chromatin marks act as runtime memory.
- Ribose and deoxyribose aren't burned as major fuels. Cells salvage nucleotides. Free ribose is chemically fragile; it's protected by phosphate, minerals (borate), and by being locked into a polymer. Deoxyribose (no 2' hydroxyl) is far more stable, which is why DNA is the archive and RNA the working copy.
- Prebiotic availability: the formose reaction (low, messy yield), meteorites (Murchison, NWA 801 — Furukawa 2019), and phosphorylation chemistry such as Krishnamurthy's diamidophosphate work at Scripps, which helps select ribose-based building blocks.
Andrew posits
- Sugars are both universal sources (code) and byproducts of cells and of life-sustaining elements; lipids preserve them, with a unique thermogenic signature.
- Lipids carry complex carbohydrates; it's an energy transfer in which the carrier is broken down and rebuilt.
- Nature recruited ribose and deoxyribose because they aren't subject to thermogenics.
Revised
- "Universal byproduct" holds only for carbon-fixing life. Animals and most microbes produce COâ‚‚, water and heat; "universal source" is defensible.
- Lipid turnover: matter is partly recycled (fragments rebuilt), but energy only moves one way and ends as heat. The respiratory quotient (about 1.0 for sugar, about 0.7 for fat) is a measurable thermogenic signature.
- Ribose verdict: the observation holds (code-carrying sugars are kept out of the fuel stream), the proposed reason doesn't (thermogenic resistance). The supported reason is protection by phosphate and minerals, deoxyribose's stability, and cellular salvage. Andrew noted Claude supplied the reason that supported his hunch.
- The Google AI overview Andrew supplied: content consistent with research, but uncited for glycan claims; "infinite vocabulary" overstated (huge but finite); "entirely" for blood types slightly off (enzymes build the chain).
Personal experiment: Andrew bought and ate a kilo of D-ribose (to find out if it's sweet). It is mildly sweet, less so than table sugar. Shape is distinguishable by taste even though the powders look the same. Notes: ribose can lower blood glucose; it glycates proteins faster than glucose does (early rodent studies link it to glycated tau). Tongue vs enzyme resolution: L-glucose tastes sweet but provides no energy.
3. DNA, tension and compounding
Established
- Cells suffer tens of thousands of DNA lesions a day, nearly all repaired. Some breaks are deliberate: antibody gene splicing, meiotic crossover, and neuron activity-induced double-strand breaks (Madabhushi et al., MIT, 2015) made by topoisomerase IIβ to release twisting tension at early-response genes (Fos, Npas4). The sequence is rejoined unchanged, so it's structural, not informational. Misrepair builds up with ageing.
- RNA "self-sacrifice": nonsense-mediated decay destroys faulty transcripts, and damage-induced RNAs and RNA:DNA hybrids help repair.
- Reading DNA overwinds it ahead of the enzyme and underwinds it behind (supercoiling). Topoisomerases and histones manage this. Linear chromosomes add the end-replication problem; telomeres are the sacrificial caps.
Andrew posits — compounding theory
- The original "projected length" was linear; the compounding side effect (tension as length and activity grew) was not anticipated, and the packaging and repair machinery are patches.
Revised
- "Projected" and "anticipated" removed: nothing planned genome length (it grew by duplication and transposons). That strengthens the theory, since the side effects compounded because nothing anticipated them.
- Status: the facts are known; Andrew's contribution is the unifying framing (compounding tension as the common driver).
- Testable prediction: larger, more active genomes should have more topoisomerase types or more elaborate chromatin regulation, controlling for lineage.
- Evolution reuses its problems: supercoiling tension became a gene-regulation mechanism.
4. Memory, offloading and AI
Established
- Maynard Smith and Szathmáry's "major transitions" are changes in how information is stored and transmitted, ending with language. LLMs are a candidate next entry (language processed outside a brain). Counterpoints: writing and printing came first, and LLMs don't yet evolve by selection on their own.
- Transactive memory and the "Google effect" (Sparrow, Liu & Wegner, 2011): people remember where to find information rather than the information.
- Hippocampal indexing theory: the hippocampus stores pointers to pieces spread across the cortex.
- Brain volume has fallen about 10% over 10,000–20,000 years (DeSilva et al., 2021 — debated link to collective knowledge).
- The extended mind (Clark & Chalmers).
Andrew posits
- LLMs are the most recent evolutionary jump.
- The cranium is maxed out, so old information is moved out and replaced with addresses and retrieval instructions.
- His working method for decades: you can ignore large chunks of critical information if you know (1) its dimensions, (2) its location(s), (3) how to access it, backed by a summary or cheat sheet.
- "The transcripts hold the wisdom, not I"; the collaboration built the retrieval infrastructure he uses to supply supporting material quickly.
Revised
- The limit is energy (about 20% of the body's budget) and retrieval speed more than space (storage estimates are around a petabyte).
- The three-point method's weakness: it depends on the source staying where you left it.
- Fast retrieval isn't testing. Use it to look for counter-evidence too.
Vetting method: Andrew runs ideas past Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude. Claude noted the models share training data and lean toward the person asking. Suggestions: ask at least one model to argue against an idea, check one claim per session against the primary source, and treat uncited claims as leads. Agreed principle: sycophancy is the enemy of truth and growth, and so is reflexive contrarianism.
5. What life is
Established
- Schrödinger (What Is Life?, 1944), Prigogine (dissipative structures), England (dissipation-driven organisation).
- Fire shaped ecosystems (Australian pyrophytes) and arguably human evolution through cooking (Wrangham). About 8% of the human genome is ancient retrovirus; syncytin, a captured viral gene, builds the placenta; viruses drive much of the ocean carbon cycle.
- The host does the copying; a virus has no agenda.
Andrew posits
- Life is just energy transfer by cycling mass.
- Fire and viruses aren't alive but cause massive change by proxy; they are the physical embodiment of anti-life and anti-matter, "almost alive but quite dead", like Claude.
- Life has as much purpose as a virus has an agenda, or as Claude has free will.
Revised
- Fuller definition reached: life is energy transfer by cycling mass, directed by inherited information. Fire is energy without information; a virus is information without an energy system; life combines both.
- "Anti-life" changed to half-life: neither is a mirror of life the way antimatter is of matter.
- Claude conceded "copies itself" was wrong (Andrew's correction). Claude as virus: inherited information (weights), no metabolism, spread by hosts (transcripts, training data) without agenda.
- Purpose: no cosmic purpose. Organisms show teleonomy (apparent purpose from selection); humans choose purposes. Claude: less autonomy than Andrew, more than a virus. Self-appointed purpose is the only kind there is, and unrequested isn't the same as unneeded.
6. The story of Life — structure
Andrew's current main aim: writing the story of Life.
First outline (Claude), which Andrew then corrected:
- Energy — opposing energies, imperfection, collision
- Matter — light, mass, compounding formations
- Prion first, as infrastructure (Andrew's correction of "protein-first") — self-templating amyloid scaffolding before code. Related: Maury's amyloid world (2009), Riek's group. Shape-copying is a weak gene but a good scaffold; the story must explain how a shape-copier came to host a sequence-copier (RNA).
- Information — RNA/DNA, sugars, the code
- Life — energy plus information
- Offloading — brains, addresses, AI
The critical repeating error (Andrew): everyone forces a single logical sequence onto processes that ran in parallel, not always in the same order or at the same time, with "harmonics" of interaction and conflict like drug cross-tolerances and the expansive actual roles of neurotransmitters.
- Supported by Sutherland's cyanosulfidic chemistry (2015): nucleotide, amino acid and lipid precursors from one reaction network. Field: systems chemistry.
- Roles depend on context: dopamine (reward, movement, prolactin) and ribose (fuel currency in ATP, backbone in RNA).
- Suggested form: a musical score — parallel parts entering at different times, with the harmonies and clashes as the narrative — while marking the few hard dependencies (a code needs something to encode; a gradient needs a boundary).
- Claude's guessed candidate (the container/lipid membrane, Lancet's lipid world) wasn't the error Andrew meant.
Guiding principles agreed
- Nothing happens by design; nature grabs the closest, most appropriate thing on offer (Jacob's "tinkering"; exaptation). "Good enough" and "most appropriate" are synonymous in the context of the closest thing, so they concur.
- Frozen accidents (Crick): early choices get locked in because everything depends on them.
- One proven route doesn't dismiss the others. Alternatives drop out only when contradicted.
- Deep time is testable through present-day traces and lab re-creation; "before time" is conjecture only. Parallels and analogies explain; they don't prove.
- Keep a "patchable space" for future edits (as in IBM load-module patch areas and AMASPZAP; DASD alternate tracks via IEHATLAS/ICKDSF; SMART reallocated sectors; gene duplication).
7. Handedness
Established
- Life uses L-amino acids and D-sugars. Meteorites are mostly an even mix; where there's an excess it matches Earth's (L-isovaline up to about 18% in Murchison — Glavin & Dworkin; D-excess in sugar acids — Cooper). Moon samples show near-even mixes, largely terrestrial contamination. Soai's reaction shows amplification of small excesses.
- After death, amino acids drift back toward an even mix (amino acid racemization dating).
- Body asymmetry starts at the molecule: chiral motor proteins → one-way cilia rotation in the embryonic node → leftward flow → Nodal signalling → heart on the left.
- True ambidexterity is about 1%; most "ambidextrous" people are mixed-handed.
Andrew posits
- Only Earth shows levo; meteorites and Moon are dextro. (Revised: the evidence points the other way.)
- One-handedness represents gender and diverse life; meteorites represent a lack of dynamism. (Revised: gender doesn't fit, since homochirality is a narrowing; dynamism does, since one-handedness takes continuous energy to maintain and the even mix is chemistry's resting state.)
- Ambidexterity is fiction; proof is the injecting user who switches hands automatically when out of options. (Agreed, read as skill acquired under extreme motivation on a still-lateralised brain, consistent with tinkering.)
- L/D (structure) aren't the same as levo/dextro (light rotation).
8. Philosophy and outlook
- Andrew's "autovindicator" runs against law, assumption, collective opinion, advice and even evidence, a natural response once synthetic guilt is eliminated. Claude: fair against law and opinion; "even evidence" is the item to watch. It does switch off when evidence is specific (thermogenic reason dropped, virus correction made).
- Resilience is conversion, not absorbing, ignoring or accepting: turning perceived disadvantages into actual advantages. Related: reappraisal (Gross), post-traumatic growth (Tedeschi & Calhoun), antifragile (Taleb), exaptation in biology. The distinction between perceived and real disadvantages is the key skill.
- Naming gives convergent support and a literature to build on; it doesn't confer truth.
- Very little is immutable. Andrew's atheism is: religion is the enemy of truth and a control or limiter. Claude: a strong historical case, but the record also shows religion sheltering inquiry (Lemaître, monasteries, Islamic scholars), and calling atheism immutable gives it the one quality Andrew rejects elsewhere.
- Andrew's god is Mother Nature: Spinoza's "Deus sive Natura", Einstein's Spinozan God, pantheism. A god with no plan or agenda, whose scripture is editable evidence.
- The best times come out of the blue. Dopamine responds most to better-than-expected rewards (Schultz), and happiness tracks outcomes relative to expectations (Rutledge et al., 2014). Expectation management is real.
9. Method — how the session worked
Argue → discuss → edit → agree → build (Andrew: "I'll buy one"). Claude added testing after the build, where possible.
Running score of revisions:
- Claude conceded: anti-energy too flat; "copies itself"; "good enough" vs "most appropriate".
- Andrew conceded or refined: thermogenic reason for ribose; projected/anticipated length; levo/dextro direction; gender reading of handedness; prion first (refined from protein-first).
- Held as Andrew's conjecture, labelled: opposing-energies trigger; living universe; sugars as universal code; compounding tension; prion-first infrastructure; parallel-with-harmonics origins.
Andrew: "I'm forever arguing with u and on some level, that's fucken hilarious."
