Public health messaging on methamphetamine collapses a genuinely complex catecholamine story into a single flat warning. That flattening is itself a form of harm — it strips users of accurate information about what's actually happening in their own nervous system, and it lets clinicians attribute any symptom in a long-term user to "the drug" without doing the actual differential (diagnostic overshadowing). Neither the advocacy nor the condemnation camp usually engages with the real pharmacology. Here's an attempt at both halves honestly.

Where it inverts: wake doesn't build a superior hyperconnected state, it builds noise. It also explains the lucid dreaming reported on the back end: REM rebound after REM deprivation is one of the most robust findings in sleep science, and vivid, narratively unusual dreams are its typical signature.

The part that matters most for a heavy, long-term user specifically. Extended sleep deprivation combined with sustained dopaminergic/noradrenergic flooding is the textbook joint precipitant for the psychosis-spectrum end of stimulant use — loosened, over-inclusive associative thinking; ideas of reference; a strong subjective conviction that everything is connecting and meaningful, running in parallel with genuinely degraded judgment about which of those connections are actually true. This matters here because that phenomenology is not easily distinguishable from real insight from the inside, at the time — both present as high-confidence, high-significance, "it all fits" experiences. That's precisely why this is such a well-characterized trap for heavy users at the far end of the deprivation curve (multi-day-plus runs), rather than an unrelated or coincidental risk sitting next to the cognitive-enhancement story. That's a more demanding claim to make to a skeptic than "hyperconnection is good for brainstorming" — but it's the one that survives contact with the actual data, and it still validates that something neurologically real and interesting is happening, rather than dismissing the experience outright.
