Views: 61542 | Comments: 0 What is the place about ? Our BB (Bulletin Board based) forum (a blast from the past) primarily covers all matters related to drug addiction, the substances involved, harm reduction, recovery, chemistry etc. as well as covering our other interests in science, technology and even includes topics explaining how the software was installed and manintained. Who are we and why did we start this site ? We started from the original Opiophile member base and was quickly built to reconnect the suddenly "homeless" members because the recently previous owner ran off with the treasury and started to shakedown it's members near the end of 2014, eventually holding the site for ransom and then taking it offline. The bulk of the members were very experienced and mature/aging users or ex-users. We run on our own virtual private server in a robust and sturdy environment in the cloud. Of course we are not "mainstream" as we are a small and underground group that never intended to replace the original Opiophile. The email group coordinator @Poppycop approached @nick who then approached me as I have am IT engineering background ... around that time @candy also became a founding member. "If you are reading this and hesitant to post, know that we were all lurkers once. You don't need to be a scientist or a philosopher. If you have a question about withdrawal, a thought on neural plasticity, or even just a funny meme about Linux, drop it in. The worst that happens is we chat. The best that happens is you realize you aren't alone." Then Discord support was added in July 2023. It's a big pity as the old Opiophile database was never given to us and so much rich historical threads and posts were lost forever (not our fault). Quite a few original members have passed away (see the member's only Departed board) or click here. What was Opiophile ? Opiophile was a pioneer site that was very professional; It was designed and built mainly for users who were addicted to opiates and opioids. Tt was founded around 2004 by Jackie (who is a member of this site) and Billy, and there were no other places for people with to commune with each other. The many members were diverse, wise, funny and well informed but mainly, globally connected in an otherwise unconnected environment at the time. The software that powered it was a paid product, vBulletin by Gelsoft, but all our software is by SMF, free and open-source. Now, things are so much different in a hyper-connected world and that hasn't helped the traffic here. I personally joined in 2007 and at that time, @nick was the most prolific poster. Where did all the Opiophile members go ? They split into the following groups: 1. A closed facebook group was created by @robojunkie 2. An email group was started by @Poppycop 3. Some went to Reddit, Quora, Drugs Forum, Bluelight and Discord etc. 4. Some lost interest, matured-out and built new lives. 5. Quite a few members, some prolific posters, passed away, sadly (there is a board dedicated to them here). Many of the members that made it here eventually moved on and now this site has its own personality. How long can the forum continue unfinanced ? We have run out of donations and I am paying for it myself now so make the most of it if you enjoy the content in here. I personally put a lot of time in providing the bulk of the content, my personal journey and understanding and have tried to make the technical forum experience as rich as possible - I doubt that there is another bulletin board forum with the deghree of functionality of ours. What can I do to help ? Please let me know if we missed anything and we welcome all input (good or bad). Enjoy yourself, play nice and be safe; thanks for your support, what ever way it comes ..., sincerely ! How do I donate ? Click on the image below: Pages:
